Here's how ZuneVoIP could kick iPod's butt

Richard Ozerman of CruchGear cites the "latest rumors from people in the know" that Microsoft's upcoming Zune will be VoIP-enabled.
VoIP functionality could be delivered through the device's already-revealed WiFi capability. A rumored add-on attachment that fits into a dock on the Zune would, it is believed, be able to hold a mic necessary for these calls.
What's seems to be a bit more challenging to me would be how to fit VoIP functionality into a non-clamshell design.
No clamshell- no foldover to go back and forth from the viewer to an onscreen dialpad.
One way to circumvent this would be an add-on keyboard that could, when accessed via an extra "phone" (or probably cooler-named) prompt in the Zune onscreen menu I am showing you, would call up an in-viewer indicator that would display the numbers as they are dialed.
Rather than a separate display, I'd like to see this onscreen phone number indicator-or, if necessary dialpad-shrinkable to a small portion of the active player window.
I'd also like to see an onscreen buddy list and address book functionality in the Zune. Also accessible via the add-on keyboard, this buddy list would also shrink to a smaller window in the Zune player.
The reason I like the smaller window for the buddy list and addy book is that a Zune user could still be watching their video or listening to their music as they summon their pals via phone or IM.
And then, what about some sort of real-time sharing capability that will allow you to share the music or video you are partaking of with your friends?
If Zune offers all these features (literally and figuratively) out of the box while iPod is still bound to the synching cradle without any realistic communications capability, iPod's world may be rocked.
And not in the music sense of the term.

Where is the convenience?
1) cel phone and iPod
2) Zune, microphone, keyboard
Seems to me you're carrying one extra thing with the Zune as you've proposed it, and unlike scenario 1), your phone will only work when you're in range of a WiFi network.
Doesn't . . .
My choice....
Who wants to bet that the biggest complaint people will have when Zune gets out is how fast the battery dies with the WiFi enabled? :)
Why the iPod?
Now I know it's still a bit expensive, but even the middle level phones are offering music and video and they are all getting cheaper, so why carry around a superfluous rebadged MP3 player?
Possible, but not likely

Why do you pick on the iPod all the time?
We expect 'NEW' stuff to be BETTER, why do you keep refering to iPod (which is a HUGE success and a huge leap forward for MP3's). Because until the iPOD burst onto the scene, nobody but geeks/nerds downloaded mp3s. I honestly remember downloading mp3s back when my friends thought I was crazy for 'downloading music'. At the time PRIOR to napster coming out (the illegal stage of its life).
I just think its funny how everyone nowadays seems to harp on the iPOD for its non-voip / non-wireless / non SDcard slot / non floatation device / non GPS / non whatever..
leave the iPod alone and focus on the features / capabilities of Zune. Stop running it agains the iPod.
My 2 cents...
And . . .
The reason everyone compares their product to the iPod is (drumroll, please): They are the market and industry leader. Same thing happens in the OS arena, too. Witness Apple's PC/Mac ads . . .
If you "plug in" four wheels and an engine
Puh-lease. Zune suffers from the same thing that almost all MS products suffer from, an inability to concentrate on one thing and do it good. Look at Pocket PC phones versus Palm phones.
What does Zune really have to offer? A nice store interface? Better storage? Radical design?
No, it's claim to fame is WiFi. What's this WiFi for? I guess if you're too lazy to use your USB cable or dock to sync it might be handy. And oh yeah, you can "loan" a song to another Zune user for three days/plays (irregardless of the copyright on the song).
All this for an expensive 30-gb iPod "me-too".
if they could get the wireless recharge working...
honestly
PDA?
Apple Fanboys
all simply drool over anything that apple makes simple because
they make it white. The ipod has no functionality what so ever! all
ud ever do is sit there and complain about how microsoft is not
doing enough no matter what they do!. I can only imagine what
people would have said if apple announced that the new iPod had
WiFi. People would be singing their praises till dawn.
