CNBC anchor Jim Goldman has just reported that according to sources, Apple will roll out a 3G iPhone by May or June of next year.

No mention of GB, but I am guessing 16. I mean, we are talking more network, more bandwidth, higher-res camera, more capacity for all those apps Apple as well as some SDK-equipped (in Feb.) third-party iPhone developers will have ready for in-device availability and/or OTA download?

Oh, and the price.

I’m wagering 16GB at $499. Apple will decide that is the sweet spot between the too-high initial $599 price for iPhone “generation one,” and cross-the-chasm to the mainstream knockdown to $399.

The current iPhones? I see a markdown to $299, and maybe even lower for some special promotions.

Agree?

The logic sounds perfect. Now, how will we recycle all these Gen 1 iphones when all the iSnobs ( I am one) decides to upgrade? I have a feeling a large number of current owners/lovers will upgrade. And since ATT allowed anyone with a current contract to get an iPhone, I'd guess anyone will be able to do this again for a new one.

Interesting - but the answer to that is another answer... Does Apple want to be #1 in cell phone distribution, or follow the usual model of be exclusive, and price high...? THAT is the question, and an answer will give you your answer as well.
I say $199 or $249 for 1st gen iPhones in the clearance
section of the online store. They wouldn't price 2nd
gen more than the current $399. It doesn't fit with
their MO of offering upgraded products at the same
price or less. Also, consider that no one is paying more
than $300 for 3G smart phones on other networks it
would be a bad move to push $500 again. If they were
somehow able to release a new iPhone at $299,
everyone, let me repeat that, everyone will have one.
