Google to world: You can have a piece of GOOG $$$ billions

Google’s stock neared $500 yesterday versus its IPO offering price of $85. Google is currently boasting a market capitalization of $146 billion.

Who Can Make Money and How Does It Happen?

Anyone who creates a Custom Search Engine (CSE) can earn money from the ads that show up on their search results pages. You connect your Co-op account with a Google AdSense account and get paid whenever someone clicks on an ad in your search results. The cost per click on an ad is determined by advertisers who compete for placement on search results pages.

How Do I Set It Up?

To connect your Co-op account with Google AdSense, go to the "Make money" tab in your search engine's control panel.

If You Already Have a Google AdSense Account

Fill in the form with the email address that you use with your AdSense account, your zip code, and the last 5 digits of your phone number. We'll use this information to connect your Co-op account to your AdSense account and you can start making money immediately.

If You Don’t Already Have a Google AdSense Account

Fill out the information in the form provided. You will receive a confirmation email that you can use to activate your account. You will not start making money until you have completed the activation process in the email. 

Characteristically, Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products and User Experience, announced the launch of “Google Custom Search Engine” with Googley user-facing goodness and not a taint of Google bottom-line mercantilism: 

We want to make it easy for anyone to create a search engine about all of their favorite topics, without needing a Ph.D. Everyone – businesses, organizations, moms, dads, teenagers, and teachers – can harness the power of Google technology to create a personalized search experience that reflects specific knowledge and interests. 

As an aside, the official Google press release noted: “Custom Search Engines are monetized through the Google AdSense program.”

Google documentation for its “Custom Search Engine,” however, clearly directs all to the:

Do Google “Custom Search Engines” creators have the option to decline Google AdSense?: 

Universities, non-profits and government organizations can choose not to run ads on their search results if they'd rather not.
