Microsoft was granted a patent in May for a “System and method of inserting advertisements into an DMM6906MS.JPGinformation retrieval system display.” Description of the patent is below and a graphic illustration is to the right.

As I indicate in my “Google Targets Interactive TV for Ad Auction Model” and my “Google Developing Social and Interactive Television Applications for ‘Mass Personalization’” posts, Google has tested personalized ITV applications and is recruiting a Product Manager to execute “strategies that enhance the user's experience when watching television and using Google’s search and advertising technologies.”

Microsoft patent: Systems and methods for selecting and inserting advertisements in an information document displayed to a user, wherein the selection is based at least in part on television programming viewed by the user. The systems and methods may be implemented using the Internet or another information retrieval system that includes a client system and a remote server. The client system monitors television programming viewed by the user and compiles a user profile characterizing the television programming. When the user requests an Internet resource using the client system, the television programming information in the user profile is utilized to select an appropriate advertisement. The advertisement is then inserted in the information document and displayed to the user. Advertisement selection and insertion may be conducted at the remote server, the client system, or at the level of the Internet service provider. Such selection of advertisement increases the efficiency by which Internet advertisements are tailored to individuals. Instead of advertisements, information relating to the television programming may be retrieved over the Internet and displayed without direct user assistance.

  • Looks like Microsoft chasing a lot of markets just to control Google.

As with Germany in WW2, Microsoft will find themselves fighting on too many fronts.

    • Size does matter

I think that entire notion and hype of Google vs. Microsoft is a bit overrated, it?s like Yankees going at Red Sox, eventually people and analyst will get over it and realize that like Yankees Microsoft just has better players and although that does not guarantee victory in every single world series but it does allow them to perform consistency better than others including Red Sox or for that matter Google?.

I think that these firms competing will definitely be good for the industry and amazing for the consumers. The bottom-line Google only makes revenue from selling ads and although the pie is getting bigger it can?t continue to grow with the same pace and thus Google might be inducted in the hall of fame as Novell. Netscape and Red Hat?

  • Important move for Microsoft

This is is very important manuver for Microsoft. TV is a area where Microsoft has no presence. There is some very big ad dollars in TV as well. Microsoft also has a awful lot of cash they can use to invest in IPTV. I would not be suprised if Microsoft offered to underwrite much or most the carriers infrastructure costs for IPTV. So what if the shareholders complain. Microsoft can always do a big stock buy back to nullify their complaints.

The really great thing is that IPTV is drive the adoption of FTTH & Fios as well as other high speed bandwidth technologies. This in turn will drive down the cost as well.

Things are about to get very interesting in any case.
