Summary: It’s February 12. Today’s the day that Microsoft is set to push its Windows-Genuine-Advantage-free version of Internet Explorer (IE) 7 to customers using Windows Software Update Services (WSUS).

It’s February 12. Today’s the day that Microsoft is set to push its Windows-Genuine-Advantage-free version of Internet Explorer (IE) 7 to customers using Windows Software Update Services (WSUS).

This is the release of IE 7, officially known as IE 7 Installation and Availability Update, which Microsoft made available for individuals to download on their own back in October 2007.

Customers using WSUS 3.0 and/or those customers running IE 6 on Windows machines who don’t want the new IE 7 update to install automatically will need to take action, the manageability team noted. Specifically, administrators will need to disable auto-approval.

... like some of the ones here on ZDnet.

WGA or not, it doesn't really matter since we found IE7 to be slow and to crash often when compared to IE6. We won't be loading it on any of our machines until it is fixed.

You see, WGA doesn't matter to us here at work because we get paid to deal with it. It's just part of the job.

Yes, I think MS is going the wrong way by annoying and pestering honest customers, but that has no bearing on our work environment.

Functionality however, that *is* a big deal ... and IE7 is just plain broken.

MS, please fix IE7 first.

Jon

Some Firefox plugins crash too

Don't blame Microsoft for the fact that Flash sucks.

I have a mix of clients: Fedora, Macintosh OS-X, and Windows. Since all of Windows clients run IE, and the story doesn't really apply to our other clients, so I never did check Firefox.

Yes, I agree, Flash is generally poor quality. In the end though, it doesn't matter if it is Adobe/ Macromedia's fault or Microsoft's fault: the blame lands on the last change, which was IE7. My clients don't like application crashes and end up asking for an IE6 roll-back, and now it works again.

I don't see how IE6 works but IE7 doesn't unless there's some issue with IE itself...

Jon

Absolutely Wild.

Another poor soul complaining of "broken IE". Just amazing. I keep hearing about broken and useless IE but I have yet to see it. I and my co-workers use IE both in the workplace and at home yet not a soul complains of "broken IE" or any problems with it. Its just a rotten shame some people just cant seem to properly work the easiest OS and browser in the world without breaking it or it breaking them. Absolutely wild.

Positively MORE wild.

First, followers of "The Chosen One" chide
Linux because it requires advanced
abilities, and at the same time deride Linux
users because they " just cant seem to
properly work the easiest OS and browser in
the world without breaking it or it breaking
them".

So which is it? Are they stupid, or are they
smarter than the average bear? Or do you
just specialize in flip-flopping?
Specifically, administrators will need to disable auto-approval.

Who, besides Mike Cox, would have this enabled??

Flash crash on purpose

Don your tinfoil hats - here's my theory:

Windows is making Flash look bad to shove the marketplace towards SilverLight:

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/microsoft_silverlight.php

They did this to RealMedia, supporting it at first, then torpedoing it, and even with mp3s for a while, where MediaPlayer rendered them fine, then added a subtle clicking sound and randomly hiccuping while their own wma technology was being rolled out.

Keep and eye peeled. Flash will only continue to work as well as Microsoft will let it.

... or was that "DOS isn't done 'til Lotus won't run".

Call me cynical but I don't think you really need a tin-foil hat for this one. MS has a long and proud history of stabbing competitors whilst pretending to embrace them.

wink

Whatever IE7 Update was contained
cglrcng@... 13th Feb 2008
...in the patch Tuesday updates yesterday fixed IE7 on my machine. It wouldn't fully complete the page loads yesterday and before, but now does. Kudos to MS on that fix! It appeared to have something to do w/ the phishing filter, but is not a problem anymore.
