About those Windows Live Messenger outages...

By | September 12, 2008, 10:28am PDT

In case you were one of the many Windows Live Messenger users affected by the recent outages of Microsoft’s consumer IM service earlier this week, here’s an update on what happened.

On Thursday September 11, I — like many of my IM contacts around the world — couldn’t sign into Live Messenger for a number of hours. Courtesy of a Microsoft spokeswoman, this is Microsoft’s statement on the disruption:

“Yesterday (September 10) and earlier today (September 11), we experienced two outages affecting a small portion of Windows Live Messenger customers. Caused by hardware problems, both outages were quickly addressed and have been fixed. The stability of the service is one of our top priorities at Microsoft and we are committed to providing our customers with the best service possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and disruption any outage may have caused.”

The outages “lasted approximately two hours each, and have since been resolved,” the spokeswoman added. Hmmm. I guess two hours without IM seems a lot longer when you really need to chat with your work colleagues….

Microsoft is in the midst of privately testing the next version of Windows Live Messenger (version 9.0). A new version of the WLM 9 beta, which is part of the broader family of Windows Live Wave 3 wares, is expected any day now.

"All systems are stable and running."

Yesterday during the outages I checked the "Service Status" web page a couple of times and each time it displayed "All systems are stable and running."

What does it take for the MSN Live Messenger service to acknowledge that, yes, they are experiencing some problems?

Two hours each - b*llocks. Me and you both know it lasted longer than that, and the least they could have done was update the service status website, so we weren't half worrying whether it was a problem with our own machines.

A non issue. Mary Jo Im holding your feet to the fire on this one, Just muck youre raking up, or is it something deeper? Pathological maybe? Has MS done something to you to make you resent them so?

And you're a twit. There you feel better? *** for Tat.
Why doesn't Microsoft FIX some of what they have already foisted upon the world, instead of concocting more of the same?

Who are the suckers? Those who get it, or those who don't?

When exactly was the last time this service went down, For that matter how can you fix an unknown hardware issue? Maybe hiring some tech clairevoyants might help? Sheesh, a free service and this kind of denegration is appalling.

Reading comprehension? Get some today!

From the article: "Microsoft is in the midst of privately testing the next version of Windows Live Messenger (version 9.0). A new version of the WLM 9 beta, which is part of the broader family of Windows Live Wave 3 wares, is expected any day now"

And I say why don't they fix the crap they already have before "inventing" more of the same?

Any more questions? Naaah, fugetaboutit..... too far over your head.

My outage started on 9/13 and is still going...reported the problem to windows live support and got an automated email back (at my husband's account which is still working) telling me to check my spelling or make sure I remember my password. Gotta love it.

it doesn't mean MS shouldn't have alerted their users of a problem with the service. Just as it is Googles and Yahoos responsibility to inform their users when they crash.
