Are Google's 'Caffeine' search results more like Bing's?

Summary: It’s hard to imagine big, bad search monopolist Google quaking in its boots over Bing (or even Bing+Yahoo). It’s hard to imagine big, bad search monopolist Google quaking in its boots over Bing (or even Bing+Yahoo). Yet just a couple of months after Microsoft launched Bing, Google announced it is tweaking its own search infrastructure.

Google officials said on August 10 that the company is seeking help testing a new-and-improved search system, codenamed “Caffeine” — complete with changes to its indexing, ranking and crawling mechanisms. Silicon Alley Insider speculates that Caffeine could be the “secret project” to which the New York Post was referring back in June when it reported that Google cofounder Sergey Brin was assembling a crack team of Google search experts to tweak Google’s engine in response to Bing.

Bing, the revamped Live Search, included a number of user-interface changes, as well as tweaks to the underlying Microsoft search algorithm. The Caffeine test site — which anyone can try themselves starting August 10 — doesn’t offer any kind of noticeable UI tweaks. It does, however, change the way results are ranked.

Search Engine Land did a side-by-side comparison of a search for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” using the old and new Google engines. They found the new Google infrastructure returned video and news results midway down the page. The current Google search system, however, returned news at the top, video in the middle, and images at the bottom of the page, Search Engine Land found.

What about comparing a Bing search to a Google Caffeine search? Here’s how a search for “Moby” looked when I used Caffeine. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

And here’s how it looked with Bing:

With Bing, Moby images are the first link. The whole Bing page feels more like a site optimized to sell users something: Moby MP3 downloads, ringtones, posters, t-shirts. With Caffeine, video links are fourth on the page. News and blog posts about Moby are a little further down. On Bing, news and blog links are nowhere to be found on the first page of results.

Caffeine and the exiting Google search results are less different from one another than are Google’s and Bing’s results. Here’s what a search on Moby on the existing Google infrastructure looks like:

Video results are in roughly the same place using the current Google search infrastructure as they are when using Caffeine. With the existing infrastructure, image results are at the bottom of the first page of results. News and blog results are — the same way they are with Caffeine — about two-thirds of the way down the page.

I realize this is hardly a definitive test. I’m sure search-engine experts will be dissecting Caffeine far more thoroughly in the coming days. But so far, I’m hard-pressed to say that Google’s Caffeine indexing system seems like it is meant to yield results that are more Bing-like in any way.

What’s your take? Is Caffeine a response to Bing? Do you see any tweaks Google is proposing with Caffeine as being in response to Bing?

You give Linux a bad name, you really do. Google would not be spending millions of dollars to revamp their search engine if they really thought Bing was a non-issue such as you have suggested.

Do you actually think at all before you speak?

I still naturally use Google search as do most people I know. I do notice a lot of people who have tried bing seem to like their video lookup more then Google. Google is smart not to underestimate Bing.

No, I am not saying anything against Google. Each to their own, of course. I am just going after the LAME statement made mentioned that I responded to.

Personally, I love Bing and does everything that I need in a search engine.

I use Google every now and then just to remind me what a frustratingly worthless search engine it really is. Even if you aren't bothered by the spying, which is a deal killer for many of us, it only takes a few searches on virtually ANY other search engine to reveal how pathetic Google is for any real work.

You're joking right? Seriously I dont know if you are being sarcastic or you're just that stupid. Bing is copying Google a lot. They are just adding some graphical panache and a few little differences and of course the indexing etc is a bit different. To say Google sucks as a search engine is ignorant.

Are you serious? Bing copying Google??? For once, MS comes up with a genuinely good product that Google is copying and you say the opposite?? Look at what you said, the graphical interface is different, the indexing algorithm is different, etc. what is left to be the same (a copy-cat as you claim)... Do not let your hatered for MS blind you eyes you Google lovers... Bing rocks!!! I have been using it since it was released and I have never been happier with any search engine...

All Bing did was combine search results. Myself, if I want to search for images I'll use Google's image search. If I want to search for videos, I'll use the video search. I can understand the appeal for some people to have everything returned on one page, but personally I don't see a need for it.

Excuse me, but there is a reason nothing else
says SEARCH quite like GOOGLE! ;

Why do you think MILLIONS MORE People all say,
"Just GOOGLE It"? haha... the pitiful truth is that
Bing compared to Google, can be summed up in a
comparison of their first results:

Google?
http://www.mobi.com/ Just what I was looking for!

Bing?
http://www.TicketsNow.com/ $$$ LOL

http://www.sleepyWrap.com/ $$$$...huh? this
relates to Moby? Yeah.... Right!

Something tells me that besides the Desktop
(where they own a 70% share of) search will just
get BIGGER for Google! grin

.....and that's not including that they
completely OWN near 100% of the MOBILE WORLD! and that
sector is way bigger than Desktops! ...you can ahum...
Google that!!! wink

Google = Internet Search
Flying Pig 13th Aug 2009
Why do you think MILLIONS MORE People all say,
"Just GOOGLE It"?

It?s true "Google" became synonymous with "Internet search". The same can be said for inline skates and Rollerblade (brand name made by Nordica), Stand-up personal watercrafts and Jet Ski (brand name made by Kawasaki), and most recently, small laptop computers with Netbook (brand name made by Psion). Not all of these companies are still the leader for the products their brand name became synonymous with. I think Google is aware that they can?t be lazy and rely on the reputation of their name alone. That?s why I?m sure they are concerned about any reputable Internet search engine that surfaces. They still need to constantly improve upon their product and market it successfully to remain the leader in the long run.

I believe in choice and to each his own. I personally like Google better than Bing. But I suspect that you are just throwing flames to make such a statement that Google is worthless. Really now. While Bing is a better looking homepage, I am hardpress to find anything else about it better than that of Google's. For the first couple of weeks of Bing, I used it for its refreshing image du jour. But it soon became old and I went back to Google. In fact, I have 3 home pages loaded with my browser, Google, Google, and Bing. Check this out: Google returns better search results on Microsoft's own technology. I mean, I search for usage help with MS products using both engines and Google consistently beats MS out. I think thats a royal shame. If you cant beat the competition on in-house information, what else do you expect to beat them on. If I need results, I will JFGI

Kurt Cobain's House
BIGELLOW 14th Aug 2009
What the person probably did was stayed zoomed
into their local area on Google Maps. When you
do this (unless you happen to live near Kurt
Cobain's house) you will get no results. Zoom
all the way out and perform the search, and
you'll get what you need.

On Bing, you just don't get anything no matter
how you slice it.

Both have stupid users. Let me make this simple for you:

3. Click on the search button.

Good luck. Oh, and don't hurt yourself.

How can you call the person stupid for not being able to find it on Bing even though that same person found it on Google. Isnt the method same for both engines? I tried it on both, and, like the user above, I got no results from Bing. I have no hangups about either engines. Bing just plainly return no result. But then again, maybe I am stupid too

So, depending on what you want to see, each search browser gives a different view. I know with google, you can decrease magnification, so it'd seem they magnified in to make Yahoo look the best. I'm betting at the same magnification level, yahoo and google would look identical (using the same resources, I'm betting)

Ok...so what?
BigTipper Updated - 11th Aug 2009
Not sure what you expect us all to see, that seems so obvious to you, but in my view it depends on what exactly you were looking for, to judge the results on. Google was superior for showing images right away, at the top of the page (Bing, you had to click on the "Images" link at the top). Google's map link was better, too. Bing had more relevant info on Kurt Cobain, a link to Wiki, etc.

I still use both, and will pick each one based on what kind of output I'm really expecting. I find they both have their pros and cons, and will continue to use both. I have to say, though, that I find myself using Bing a bit more each day. Might come down to simply looking a bit more pleasant. I know Google uses a stripped-down presentation to lower bandwidth, and speed up the delivery, but when you have high-speed internet, it's hard to notice any difference.

Maps: Google vs. Bing
lalogos 12th Aug 2009
Frankly, I love Google and use it almost exclusively. Even maps.google.com is excellent for MOST things. However, when it comes to reproducing DRIVING DIRECTIONS (very practical, mind you, to 99% of the folks out there), Google is NOT GOOD. In fact, the screw it up easily 50% of time. I can't even us google for DRIVING DIRECTIONS anymore.

I have found that Google is NOT GOOD (better than saying s****) when it comes to pinpointing addresses. Approx. 30% of the time, Google targets a longitude/latitude that is up to a mile off! From a vantage point in space, this is good; when driving through LA, it's REALLY DANGEROUS 'cause you get lost quick!

My wife will not allow me to give her directions or targeted addresses in google maps--only Yahoo (now MS/Yahoo?). Even MapQuest gives more accurate pinpointing than google.

Finally, I have found that google is behind in updating known streets: google's maps are OLD. When living in an "up and coming area" where most streets are less than 10 years old, I have to use services other than google to get any real usable maps.

I partially agree...
scorchgeek 13th Aug 2009
I've certainly noticed that some things are wrong, have old images, etc. But cut them a little slack--how many millions of miles of road do they have to update?

The directions tend to work out okay, in my experience. I have run into several occasions where I got lost because it didn't say which fork to take, but having a map fixes that.

Mapquest should have better maps...
jasonp@... 14th Aug 2009
it's their specialty. It's all that they do. There would be a major problem if Yahoo, Google or any other search engine had better maps than MapQuest, wouldn't you think?

Google "rankings"
Joe_Raby 11th Aug 2009
"Google officials said on August 10 that the company is seeking help testing a new-and-improved search system, codenamed ?Caffeine? ? complete with changes to its indexing, ranking and crawling mechanisms"

Does that mean that they'll actually be honest and start using crawling results instead of letting engineers just pick and choose which pages show up at the top?

This is awesome. A company like Google is being brought down by a minor player in the search field like Microsoft. Google has every reason to be quaking in their boots, they can no longer sit around and play with office toys and neglect their services anymore. Bing is the better search engine anyway, it provides me with relevant results, not someone's blog spam like you find on Google.

Unlike Google....
Joe_Raby 11th Aug 2009
Bing has safer ad results too. Google started up this "anti-malware" campaign which I find is totally laughable because Google spreads more malware links online through Adsense than any other source. Google doesn't care if some link-bait malware writer is posting an ad to a site that installs WinAntispyware or some other fake antivirus program, so long as they pay their Adsense bills on time.
there is also a lot of talk of censoring of data on Bing, which isn't cool.
