Microsoft announced at its partner conference on July 10 that it will launch Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 together in a single launch on February 27, 2008, in Los Angeles.

Microsoft officials have been saying for a few months now that while the company planned to release to manufacturing Windows Server 2008 (the product formerly known as "Longhorn Server") before the end of 2007, it planned to launch Windows Server 2008 officially some time in early 2008.

(According to my sources, Microsoft is planning to RTM Windows Server 2008 -- as well as Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 -- in November. All Microsoft will say publicly about its Windows Server 2008 RTM schedule is it's on track to RTM "before the end of the year. It won't say anything on its plans for Vista SP1 RTM.)

Microsoft has yet to release Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2008 (code-named "Orcas"). That beta is expected some time "this summer." Microsoft officials have said they expect to release to manufacturing the final version of Visual Studio 2008 in either late 2007 or early 2008.

Microsoft recently released a private Community Technology Preview release of SQL Server 2008, code-named "Katmai." Earlier this year, Microsoft said to expect SQL Server 2008 to be released to manufacturing some time in 2008. (It's not clear whether Microsoft will release to manufacturing the final SQL Server 2008 bits before the big February launch party.)

    • This is not Beta 2, it is the June CTP

      Beta 2 is not already avaliable. This link is for the June CTP which were released on regular schedules throughout the last year. Beta 2 will be avaliable early august.

      • Sorry, you are wrong

        Go ahead and install it. It's called Beta 2.

    • CTP is not beta 2

      Hi. If you follow this link, you will see this is a new CTP (Community Technology Preview) build. Those builds are interim and not of beta quality, according to Microsoft. Microsoft still has not delivered Beta 2 of Orcas.

      • Have you installed it?

        Guess what it says when you fire it up...
        No_Ax_to_Grind
        • You know nothing about CTP and beta.

        • Yes it would say that, as text and logos are updated during the CTP process

          As it is an interim build, most of the text will be updated throughout the CTP process. I can honestly confirm this is not beta 2.

        • LOL

          It's CTP... ! hahaha

      • You are believing Microsoft over No_Ax_to_Grind?

        That would be yet another person who find Microsoft to be a better source on Microsoft products and betas than No_Ax_to_Grind.

        • I'm also believing Microsoft over No_Ax_To_Grind.

          He's in no position to correct me that Beta 2 is June CTP, which it isn't. It's just some fixes and bugs that get worked out during the period of Beta 1.

          For example, in Beta 1, I've encounted a bug on which Visual Studio Orcas throws an exception. When I have this XAML code:

          [code]<Grid>
          <Grid.Background>
          </Grid.Background>
          <Grid.Background>
          </Grid.Background>
          </Grid>[/code]

          The WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) Designer didn't handle the exception, so Visual Studio showed me an error message with an error message.

          For more information about the error report I filed, click [url=https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=283935]here[/url]. (Note that you'll need a Windows Live ID (formly Microsoft Passport) to sign in.)

    • How can you interprete June CTP as Beta 2?

      Sorry! Go back to school, you moron!
      Grayson Peddie
      • Same question, have you installed it?

        I have and when it starts up guess what its called...
        No_Ax_to_Grind
        • I have Beta 1, which is the latest:

  • Is this a good idea?

    Looking at what happened when they did this last time with .NET 2.0, SQL 2005, and VS 2005 - they ended up with huge delays, tons of cut features, and really buggy code (VS 2005 had/still has features that are almost unusable). Just my $0.02.

  • Wow! A triple play!

    I'd be cool to buy Visual Studio Orcas Standard, Windows Small Business Server 2008, and SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition, in order to stay in leading/bleeding edge of the server/development software. However, that's only if I have about $1500-$2000.

    I've got to save up all my money, now...even though I'll be in college this fall second semester.
