Google takes a page from Bing's look book

By | June 3, 2010, 12:16pm PDT

Summary: On June 3, Google did something that really surprised me. The company that’s made its reputation on home-page minimalism announced it was going to allow users to turn the sacred home page into something very Bing-like.

Microsoft and Google have been engaged in a search tit-for-tat for the past year. One shows visual search; the other tries to one-up its competitor. One talks up going beyond the 10 blue links; so does the other.

On June 3, however, Google did something that really surprised me. The company that’s made its reputation on home-page minimalism announced it was going to start allowing users to change the Google.com background by adding their own customized photos from their PCs and/or Picasa. Google will begin phasing in the new customization option in the U.S. first, and extend it internationally in the coming days, officials said.

Bing, which turned one-year-old today, has been offering users different Microsoft-selected photo backgrounds each day. The Bing background photo also includes a number of hotlinks inside the photo, allowing users to obtain more information via Bing on the subject of each day’s photo selection.

Can you see the headlines if MIcrosoft had decided to modify the Bing home page and make it more like Google’s (and like the original WIndows Live Search)? “Microsoft copies Google!” “Get out your photocopiers (again) Redmond!” The reaction to Google’s announcement has been quite subdued in comparison….

Google is giving users the choice/option to ad pics to their Google page. With Bing, I don't think there's a user choice there. You get what Microsoft push. My bet is MS will add this user feature also. Me I could care less.

I wonder if the processing needed to sync a photo for the background will slow access to the web engine's homepage? Further, most use the address bar to search rather than typing in google.com or bing.com.

@jznoy-dallas Do you think so? I believe most of the common pc users still type in the search query box on bing.com or google.com, trust me.

You are correct. It is the sad state that the media has brought this country to. If the media could actually do follow through on their stories every now and then the whole country would be better off.

This is what Google's been wasting time on? Learning how to put an image on a web page? That is basic HTML 101. Now we see why no one respects that company. Not to mention who really wants a custom image on their search page? This is where Bing has the advantage. At least their search page is educational and informative. Google's is just plain dry. Its also why Bing keeps increasing in usage. Bye bye Google, don't let the door hit accessmedicalbooks from this we cartecampus to get the internetparalaevangelizacion will have any pcloshwdb that can be estudielenco from you.
I give them till the end of the year, then the board will oust all the management and they'll be desperate to be sold to Microsoft.
I grow up using DOS/Windows, developing software on DOS/Windows, Unix/Linux/IBM as well. Like many people, I believe that BillG and Microsoft are the symbol of American Spirit which I adore deeply.
But I have never felt I want to side with any company or their products. Until one day, friend of mine told me three year ago that Google had passed Microsoft in market value. Then I started looking at the news about Microsoft.
To me surprise, from what I know, majority of them are negative about Microsoft. Most of them are based on speculation, distorted facts, and large number of them are wishful remarks that denounce everything Microsoft do.
I am disgusted, not that I am a fan of msft. Not so in fact. I am disgusted because where those remarks come from. Why those people are so interested in doing this. I don't have to give examples here.
When netbook come along, you could find tons of articles saying msft is in trouble, blah, blah... They said that cheerfully. But when Windows totally crashed Linux on netbook in 2009. I don't see anyone say a word.
what they are talking about now: msft is losing the mobile space, blah, blah, blah.
I truely believe freedom of speech, but can those people just be honest from time to time?

@dave95. Also, Microsoft has already committed to owning OS updates for WP7. They've adoped a completely new strategy since Windows Mobile. Handset makers and wireless carriers will no longer get to dictate which phones receive OS upgrades. Based on how well Microsoft treated Zune owners over the years.

I could care less about putting a photo, unprofessional or otherwise, behind my search engine. One more thing I don't want to have to do. Google can really come with up with some real turds sometimes. Yet they rarely get mentioned.

Oh yes, double standard
HollywoodDog 3rd Jun 2010
See Microsoft is really the victim here, and the whole world hates Microsoft.
In other news, I was reading something interesting today about cultures of victimhood.
http://tinyurl.com/2v36ntq
...
"A prime cause of this inversion is the distortion in perception brought about by rank tribalism. Those whose worldview is shaped by their identification as members of a particular religious, nationalistic, or ethnic group invariably over-value the wrongs done to them and greatly under-value the wrongs their group perpetrates. Those whose world view is shaped by tribalism are typically plagued by an extreme persecution complex (the whole world is against us!!!; everyone who criticizes us is hateful and biased!!!)."

You see, it's actually you that feels they are really the victim, but what you're doing is known as "projecting", in which a person projects their fears and anxieties onto other people and situations.

But when they bring to market, their products are usually top notch. There is a video on Neowin today showing a Slate device running Windows Compact 7 running the Metro UI, with tight integration to social networking. To me, the Metro UI is the most functional UI out there on any consumer electronic device. Beats iOS and Android hands down.

@jk_10 But dont you think its those people who kind of prod M$ into creating a better product, Like you said everyone said Cloud computing would be the future, and M$ jumped on board, and I dont know if have ever used Windows mobile, but it was horrible, and while I havent seen their latest version, i am sure it has gotten considerably better. Its those people who put M$ under the magnifying glass and help them to create a better product. Look at the differences in Vista vs. Win7, win7 is far superior to vista in speed and stability. The reason you dont hear anyone talk about M$ when they succeed is because they are expected to succeed, so when they do its not really news. I am like you, I am certainly not a M$ fan, but I have to work on and use their products on a daily basis, so I get to see alot of the faults (most of which start with the end user). As for this whole adding a picture to the google background, I mean seriously the responses on here are absolutely insane, doing this is not going to make or break either company, and google isnt forcing anyone to put a photo up, they are giving you the options if you wish, personally I am not going to change my google page, and I will continue to use google because the search page and results are not nearly as busy as Bing, and few times I have used bing, I was not impressed with it, but I also know that even if bing fails miserably (which at this point I am certain it wont) it will hardly bring M$ to its knees. In fact M$ has a way of taking a turd (vista) and turning diamond (win7).

@jk_10 very true. some useless souls in the media are unnecessarily screwing companies. the stocks are sensitive to news. why take sides and speculate in favor of someone else? Today a lot of people are rich because of Microsoft. They paid higher taxes that was helpful for the govt than the peanuts paid by the people who write useless articles/news just to gain attention. I think media also made good bucks by writing against a giant. Wish we start admiring, hating, understanding the products and not companies.

"The company that?s made its reputation on home-page minimalism"...

Really, Mary Jo? I don't really think that Google's minimalist home-page made them what they are today...
Not sure that having a picture as a background really changes things for me. I kind of thought having a background picture was part of HTML - didn't realize Bing owned this. wink

I like Google the way it is. Bing's search results usually aren't as good as Google's. I use Google 90% of the time and Bing 10%.

As long as the search results come up, with out all the "try this link" "you really need to look here" "I think you meant to go here" bullsh*t that BOTH are heading to, I care not what the back ground is. I just want a simple search engine, without interactive ads. When I can find one, those two can roast on whichever plane of hell that they assigned.

Honestly, who goes to the Google homepage any more? I either type what I'm searching for right into the omnibar or into the Google search box at the top-right of every major web browser.

It's maybe once or twice a week that I hit the google.ca or google.com homepage.

well they did the same thing with Google Search too. The new Google search page is replica of Bing search. Another thing to note is Bing maps is far superior in terms of accuracy and reliability than Google Maps. Surprise Galore!
