Help Microsoft come up with a cool product name

Summary: The LiveSide.net guys are wondering aloud whether Microsoft might pull a Hotmail and revert to a previous product name for Windows Live Folders. The Live team needs all the branding help it can get. What do you think they should do?

The LiveSide.net guys are wondering aloud whether Microsoft might pull a Hotmail and revert to a previous product name for Windows Live Folders.

Windows Live Folders is a file-storage service. Microsoft commenced limited beta testing of Windows Live Folders in late June, after years of hinting that it was set to launch such a service.

Windows Live Folders was originally codenamed "SkyDrive." Might Microsoft dump the boring Windows Live Folders beta name and roll out the final version of the cloud-storage service under the "SkyDrive" brand?

Such a move wouldn't be completely unprecedented. Hotmail became Windows Live Mail, only to revert back to Windows Live Hotmail.

The Live team needs all the branding help it can get.

  • Branding Idea

LIve.com is a really cool URL. I would drop the Windows part of the branding for all
the Live.com services. So lets have live hotmail, live search etc. As well as sounding
more sharp it would show that MS are really taking RIAs really seriously. That they
see web based software and services as a business that will become more
important than Windows OS. It would also show that they are not an IBM style
dinosaur but a company that can compete and take on Google. I would also NOT
even consider buying Yahoo! That would just distract resources that need to be
deployed at Google's throat. I think that MS can overtake Google in the next 3
years. This is because Google share price cannot go up forever, Eric Schmidt is very
arrogant, Page and Brin are becoming corrupted by money and power and Google
search is no longer a much better search engine that Live Search, Yahoo! or Ask.
BTW I really hope that this Wikia Search product becomes serious competition to all
these Corporate Giants. Healthy Competition is the ONLY thing that keeps these
    people honest.

  • Enron

When Enron was well thought of, a company asked what it should rename itself. One wag said that Enron was taken (as a name) and why not call the company Moron.

Since most of them are so poorly, sloppily and carelessly written, maybe that is a good name for almost any MSFT product: Moron.

Yes, that sounds about right: Windows Moron. The only problem is it applies to so many MS products: Zune, Vista, Xbox, and so many services: Word Help, Outlook Help, Powerpoint Help, System Services Help, cut/copy and past, etc. Just add a few of your own.....

    • Too lackluster

They'd have to add a suffix
like "soft", "aah", "nah", or "nick".

      Yeh, that's it. "Moronick"

  • How about ? Cirrus ??

A thought, what abot ? cirrus ?, a type of cloud formation, sometimes known as mare's tails.
An anthor problem with ? cumulus ?, is that it is a trademark of the Swiss supermarket chain, Migros. They use it as their name for their loyaty card.
