Microsoft creates new consumer channels group to be headed by Chris Capossela

A week after Microsoft Senior Vice President of Central Marketing Mich Matthews announced plans to leave, Microsoft announced her replacement will be former Office marketing chief Chris Capossela.

Capossela will lead a newly created Consumer Channels Group at Microsoft, which "brings together Microsoft’s Retail, Mobile Operator and Distribution teams into one organization," according to a company press release.

Capossela will be reporting to Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner and will work with Microsoft's OEM, retail, mobile operator and distribution partners across Windows (consumer), Windows Phone, Xbox and Office. He also will head up Microsoft's marketing, advertising and corporate communications, basically becoming Microsoft's chief marketing officer.

Capossela has been with Microsoft for 20 years, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of the Office Division. Capossela announced his plans in March to move to a different role inside the company, but it wasn't until April 6 that his new appointment was announced.

He will be yet another sacrificial lamb. Hopefully your last stop on the way out is not to head up the retail division.

    Wearing all those hats while working for Ballistic BeanCounter Ballmer should prove to be a challenge. Since there are MSFT retail stores adjacent to many of Apples outlets, you can observe the long lines next door to determine where the business is going.

  • He has had success with groups in Office

    I was watching an interview with him, he use to be the Program Manager for Microsoft Access, Project and Office. He seems to be an experienced Microsoft employee who has been around in variety of capacities over the past 20 years. Also, he was a key advisor to Bill Gates and use to prepare many of his public presentations and speeches. So, with that depth of Microsoft history behind him, he should do quite well in his new role. Wish him all the best. I just hope he understands in marketing, one size does not necessarily fit all. If you are going to market Windows Phone 7 to a consumer who doesn't have any interest in Exchange, SharePoint or Office, market it to a user who doesn't have any interest in Exchange, SharePoint or Office.
