Microsoft delivers missing RIA tools, components for Silverlight 4

By | May 18, 2010, 10:13am PDT

Summary: When Microsoft delivered the final Silverlight 4 bits in mid-April, a few complementary components weren’t done yet. But this week, the company is making available for download some of those missing pieces. Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) RIA Services for Silverlight is one of those, but it is downloadable as of May 17.

When Microsoft delivered the final Silverlight 4 bits in mid-April, a few complementary components weren’t done yet. But this week, the company is making available for download some of those missing pieces.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) RIA Services for Silverlight is one of those. On May 17, Microsoft delivered the final 1.0 release of that code, which adds support for Silverlight 4 and Visual Studio 2010.

Last summer, Microsoft officials said to expect the final version of Rich Internet Application (RIA) Services for Silverlight in the first part of 2010. (At that point, the platform was known as .Net RIA Services; Microsoft changed the name to WCF RIA Services in the interim.)

WCF RIA Services is a framework that brings together the ASP.Net and Silverlight platforms. It provides a pattern for writing application logic that runs on the middle tier. It also streamlines tasks like authentication and data validation by integrating with Silverlight components on the client and ASP.Net on the mid-tier, according to a description on the download site. The goal of WCF RIA Services (originally codenamed “Alexandria) is to bring RAD programming to RIA development and is considered by many as a competitor to Adobe’s Flex framework.

Microsoft also made available for download yesterday an add-on package – Silverlight 4 tools for Visual Studio 2010 — which supports the WCF RIA Services. The tool add-on can be installed on top of either Visual Studio 2010 or Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. A description of its capabilities (from the download site): The Silverlight 4 add-on tools “extend existing Silverlight 3 features and multitargeting capabilities in Visual Studio 2010 to also create applications for Silverlight 4 using C# or Visual Basic.”

Microsoft is collecting suggestions for changes/additions to future versions of WCF RIA services via its Web site. The top three so far (vote-wise): Support data-change notifications from the server; support for Windows Phone 7; and allow multiple DomainServices to share the same Entity.

?I don?t consider that I?ve gone back to work with Microsoft? with this new job,

Walli said his first order of business with the Foundation will be to make sure the organization has its IT management and

He also will be working with Executive Director Paula Hunter to seek additional sponsors for the Foundation besides Microsoft, he said.
?Some foundations, historically, are very project-centric,? Walli said, citing the Apache Foundation as

@cstrathmore That is really a big question. Google's servers are the heart of Google's business. And it has long been a FEATURE, a FEATURE, not a LOOPHOLE, that one could privately modify the GPL code they use to run their business. Of course web applications are obviously SaaS. But where does one draw the line between those applications and the servers that host them? For example, take an insurance company running open source on their back end servers. At some point they decide to put a customer facing front end on those servers so that customers can access their accounts over the Net. Does that suddenly make that whole kaboodle Saas? If so, I am not sure I am comfortable with AGPL. In fact, I am not sure I am comfortable with this concept anyway since it undercuts one of the few provisions that make GPL software highly attractive to businesses that are not engaged in reselling the software itself. It really compromises the spirit of the GPL in some ways
@cstrathmore When our IT Licensing Compliance team went from 2 people to 9 people in 2006 (mainly because of Microsoft) our CIO got serious about moving away from Microsoft. We migrated more than 400 apps and 900 servers from Windows and Unix to RHEL/LAMP architecture. We've added another 400 servers since then. Our desktops are still Windows, so we still have 2 administrators who do nothing except try to keep the changing rules from Microsoft straight and our costs at a minimum level. Every year, we get presentations from Microsoft about licensing changes, and every year those presentations get longer, even though we have reduced our MS footprint considerably from what it was in 2006. I think someone at Microsoft loves complexity for its own sake Or they truly don't care to analyze customer impact except for revenue numbers.

VDA is a non-starter for us, as many of the so-called benefits do not apply. All of our efforts and analysis for virtualization is currently based on backend cloud services as opposed to virtual desktops. This could change if there was a financial incentive for it, but VDA does not present a good case for it.
@cstrathmore I'm the same way, I do my best to remain neutral. It's hard, if you communicate with the person the other person dislikes, then you fall out of favor with them! I simple can't dislike a person, just because someone else does, I just can't.
