Microsoft delivers MySQL-to-SQL database migration tool

By | August 13, 2010, 7:05am PDT

On August 12, Microsoft made available the first version of a tool designed to help customers migrate from MySQL to SQL Server and/or SQL Azure.

The MySQL migration tool is part of the SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) tookit family. Version 1 is available for download from Microsoft’s download center. Microsoft also refreshed its family of other SQL migration tools — for Oracle, Sybase and Access — at the same time as part of its 4.2 release yesterday. (The Access refresh also enables migrations to SQL Azure.)

Microsoft made available a first technology preview of the MySQL migration tool in January 2010.

As I noted back in January, even though MySQL has been a Microsoft partner, it also is a Microsoft competitor. And ever since Oracle bought Sun and (get MySQL in the process), Microsoft has been treating MySQL as even more of a rival.

SSMA for MySQL v1.0 works with MySQL 4.1 and above. The tool allows users to convert/migrate tables, views, stored procedures, stored functions, triggers, cursors, DML statements, control statements and transactions, according to a blog post on the SSMA Team’s blog.

@de-void- Don't get me wrong, iPhone games are cute... for about 10 minutes. To compare them to the games you can get for the PSP (the only other mobile game platform I have any personal experience with) is absolutely laughable though!!!

Again, before the Apple zealots go absolutely nuts on me, I'm not saying the iPhone is bad but come on, if you've played even one PSP game, you have to admit they are simply not even in the same league when it comes to gaming. And that's okay. iPhone doesn't have to be good at everything. But please don't ever compare iPhone to PSP. That's just silly. araba oyunu

@de-void-21165590650301806002836337787023 The difference between the right word and the almost right word is really a large matter ??? it's the difference between a lightning bug and the lightning.

@de-void-21165590650301806002836337787023 I'm the same way, I do my best to remain neutral. It's hard, if you communicate with the person the other person dislikes, then you fall out of favor with them! I simple can't dislike a person, just because someone else does, I just can't.

Only junk insignificant apps use the subprime noob MySql so there's no need for them to migrate to SqlServer or any serious database server for that matter.

Facebook uses mySQL. LinkedIn uses mySQL. Craigslist uses mySQL. Wikipedia uses mySQL. iStockphoto uses mySQL. Eli Lilly uses mySQL. Ernst and Young uses mySQL. Eastman Kodak uses mySQL. Hewlitt-Packard uses mySQL. SAS uses mySQL. SonicWALL uses mySQL. Veritas uses mySQL. VMWare uses mySQL. Zimbra uses mySQL. Slashdot uses mySQL. Should I go on or do you get it?

  • Facebook, LinkedIn and so on = junk apps
    @jasonp

Yeah very interesting you don't understand there's nothing mission critical behind those apps. If some data goes corrupted in your Facebook record, it ain't affect nothing. No one cares.

If you fail a medical record for a hospital and cause a diagnosis accident then you are in for serious doo doo, which is why those mission critical guys use Sql Server over the subprime junk aka MySQL.

    Nice try.

  • jasonp@: do they use it exclusivelly
to run their own businesses, or are you speaking only in the terms of smaller, less critical applications they sell or give away?

Only n00bs use SQL server. Professionals use PG, Oracle, mainly. MySQL is neat for certain applications too. SQL server? God, no!
