Microsoft to push WGA-free IE 7 update to corporate users in February

By | January 15, 2008, 7:43am PST

On February 12, Microsoft will deliver, via its Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) automatic update mechanism for businesses, an update to Internet Explorer 7 that is Windows-Genuine-Advantage-free.

Microsoft made the IE release — known as the IE 7 Installation and Availability Update — available  on its software download site in October 2007. Microsoft did not push the update automatically to customers at that time.

The new update disables the WGA validation checking process that has been required for IE 7 installation, enabling IE 7 to run on Windows builds that are not deemed to be “genuine.” WGA is the anti-piracy mechanism Microsoft uses to check whether users are running non-pirated  Windows before allowing them to download certain product updates, fixes, white papers and other related information.

The IE 7 Installation and Availability Update includes other new features, as well. The menu bar is on by default in this new update. A “first run experience” page for new users is added, as well. The page prompts users to select a default seach provider, set phishing-filter settings, opt into using ClearType, etc.

Microsoft made public its business-delivery plans for the IE update in a January 14 posting to the Manageability Team blog. According to the manageability team:

“If you have configured WSUS to ‘auto-approve’ Update Rollup packages (this is not the default configuration), Windows Internet Explorer 7 will be automatically approved for installation after February 12, 2008.”

Customers using WSUS 3.0 and/or those customers running IE 6 on Windows machines who don’t want the new IE 7 update to install automatically will need to take action, the manageability team noted. Specifically, administrators will need to disable auto-approval before February 12, as Microsoft details in this Knowledge Base article.

Meanwhile, in other WSUS news, Microsoft is planning to push its Silverlight Flash-competitor (the 1.0 release, I’d assume) over WSUS on January 22.

“By using WSUS, administrators can fully manage the distribution of Silverlight to all computers running the Windows operating system in their network,” blogged a Microsoft developer evangelist.

I asked Microsoft for more details but was rebuffed. I’d assume admins will be able to disable the automatic Silverlight update the same way they can the IE 7 update, however.

MS appears to be rolling back WGA capabilities across the board. It would appear they are listening to their customers. Without fanfare, or lame spin like Sony (touting themselves as champions of DRM freedom as they are the last one brought kicking and crying into the new marketplace on music), they simply release what is now a much better product.

We accidentally used a pirated XP keys back when we first started rolling out XP five years ago. The key was blacklisted by XP service pack 1, and we ended up having to go back and change the key for about 25 machines.

I bet other business who made similar *honest* mistakes, but with many, many more machines have given Microsoft the business over WGA and have prompted this "change of heart".

Bill Gates

It's because Bill Gates retired and the new person who manages it seems to be changing Microsoft's ways. Some of the new programs that they have released isn't so bloated in a way.
according to the blog post. The sentence before the one you quoted here.

To me, "have the ability" implies "off by default".

Since Silverlight isn't part of Windows, if they treated it as an "on by default" update, they'd probably have an antitrust suit waiting from Adobe before the first download was sent out.

Now the WGA is only off for the purposes of getting IE 7. And it only happens for the corporate level.
Why is MS so gung-ho (or so it seems) to allow IE 7? Why do they want to push it like this? I mean if they are against piracy then why would they allow an upgrade of any of their porducts, whether they were free to begin with or not?
Now I could understand some of the why as far as the corporate level is concerned but it still seems somewhat odd. We will just have to wait and see I guess.

Had they enforced WGA before FF and others got a foothold, it might have worked. Especially before Apple got any traction. MS has lost the ability to dictate how people use the web, so WGA lockout actually hurts their market share.

That's a laugh. Nothing can't stop a user from downloading another browser. That would bring anti-trust lawsuits and such.

And as far as I'm concerned, WGA only makes sure you have a real copy of Windows and that's it. It does not 'dictate how people use the web'. I have a real copy, and have nothing to worry about.

You don't remember the days where 30% of sites just didn't work with anything but I.E.? I can remember many sites made with probably frontpage that rendered terrible, or changing banks because it was an only I.E. solution.

In the last couple of years, fewer and fewer sites require IE to be able to view them, thanks to the increasing popularity of Firefox and other browsers.

And if I ever run into those that do, I use the IE Tab extension which allows you to run IE in Firefox. Great stuff.

Brand new TabletPCs didn't pass WGA
robertjtownley@... 14th Feb 2008
We have had 4 brand new TabletPC machines from 2 different manufacturers that did not pass WGA - WHAT A HEADACHE! I WANT THOSE WEEKS OF MY LIFE BACK. It was not until much later (several months) versions of WGA came out that it worked and still you had to be administrator while browsing the web - stupid stupid stupid. So yes, WGA dictated that i use the web in a very stupid manner.

You can't buy the TabletPC OS in a store, it has to come preinstalled on the hardware, but it still didn't pass WGA.

How much time have i had to waste tracking down the exact CD used to patch or install or change yet another version of microsoft office? Don't have that problem with OpenOffice.

I saw the light of open source at this time. Things are not perfect there either, but i have much better control of my time in the open source world than i do managing licenses.

Sneaking in Silverlight???

"Meanwhile, in other WSUS news, Microsoft is planning to push its Silverlight Flash-competitor (the 1.0 release, I?d assume) over WSUS on January 22."

Are they doing this just to automatically enhance marketshare of their Flash competitor Silverlight? Could be another monopoly-abuse lawsuit brewing here.
I can't count the number of times I try to download something from Adobe and see the checkbox to unmark - Download Google Toolbar. So annoying.

I hate how Apple makes you download Quicktime along with iTunes, especially when I never use Quicktime, nor need to.

At least Silverlight is better to work with than Flash. Does it matter if it comes with WSUS? I don't think so.

Microsoft, having been declared a MONOPOLY in the PC OS market, may not leverage said monopoly to gain in other markets.

While establishing a monopoly position is not illegal, maintaining it and leveraging it to enter new markets are.

Last time I checked, Adobe has never been declared a Monopoly.

Just because you're bestowed a title doesn't mean you can't change.

Just because you used to steal a lot, doesn't mean you still rob houses.

Just because you used to be a goody-good two shoes in 8th grade, doesn't mean you still are.

Times change, and a report filed almost 8 years ago, is invalid to today's time.

Many tech companies have been created, competition has increased, new products made, innovations, and a bazillion things have happened since 1999.

How relevant your answer is. NOT.

Microsoft MSN Yahoo would be a monopoly
robertjtownley@... 29th Apr 2008
MS wants to buy Yahoo b/c Yahoo has Zimbra - real competition to MS Exchange. MS would then have a monopoly on the major players in email. They would be expanding horizontally in the industry on the web. The security concerns alone of having one company provide all that scare me. Tell Real Networks MS is not a monopoly. Corporate culture doesn't change.

Not really
c45207 16th Jan 2008
This just means that is will show up in WSUS as something that can be installed. If an administrator has configured WSUS to automatically approve all updates (not the default), then, yes, Silverlight would be automatically installed.

However, the default would be to simply list it as an update in the WSUS administrative console.

...what MSFT does any longer?

By now everyone knows that, since MSFT has done it, it must be too big, too unwieldy, too complex, too "feature leaden" and, most importantly, it does not work right.

MSFT has become the General Motors of computing: bloated, lazy, utterly incapable of delivering a consistent product or service and without a hint of innovation.

MSFT, after Vista, WM, Xbox and Zune has the smell of rotting fish all over it.

Who cares what MSFT does? Whatever it is, it is a complex failure.

End of story.

Old toolbars crash ie7 and most folks feel like they were punk'd by microsoft into a bad update. Somewhere in the installation process it needs to check and disable old toolbars for this to work smoothly.

AND Liking it. It now shows the Menu bar, the update I downloaded for Internet Explorer 7 awhile back didn't have it. Now I don't have to use CTRL-P for print or find any of the hidden features.

I only use Internet Explorer if Mozilla Firefox is giving me trouble. But the IE Tab seems to be doing it's job also.

I question was MS has added to IE 7 while removing WGA. I know as fact, that Siverlight constantly pings an MS server and sends encrypted data.

Who Sees the Light in Silverlight?

http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/redesigned-microsoft-website-to-use-silverlight/

Microsoft to Push Silverlight via Redesigned
Website

Microsoft realizes (as has the rest of the
geek community) that Silverlight is on the
verge of being forgotten. Claims of
superiority aside (true or otherwise),
Microsoft has realized that if Silverlight
is to stand a chance, it's going to take
more than a failed attempt at making a
Silverlight-powered social community to get
developers and consumers alike to adopt
Silverlight.

It's a desperate move, there's no doubt
about it. While Microsoft will no doubt be
making an alternative HTML interface
available for a mixture of legal and
practical purposes, switching Microsoft.com
over to Silverlight is a sure-fire way to
get that attention.... and depending on how
it's both marketed and carried out, it could
be what it takes to make developers start
taking Silverlight seriously.

Totally irrelevant
quikboy 17th Jan 2008
First link is by Flex fanboys. Give me a link about Flex from Silverlight fan sites, and I doubt you'll get positive reactions either.

And I downloaded Silverlight - quick and fast. I went to the Microsoft website, and none of this nonsense hang-ups they claim.

The second link is also not a good one. Many of the commentors show that there are unseen benefits to Silverlight.

Silverlight still is in development, and it's not like it's finished yet. What you see now is just a sample.

From what I've heard, it's more easier to work with, and has more extras than Flash.

So if Adobe released a new format, it's ok?

But if Microsoft did the same, it's wrong? What's different?

Too late MS - I already switched to SeaMonkey
carpenter114@... 18th Jan 2008
I am tired of the WGA games. Finally Outlook refused to send email, and rather than re-install Outlook I backed up my messages and then installed SeaMonkey v. 1.1.7 (an integrated browser/email Mozilla Firefox product) last week.
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/start/
or "straight" Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

SeaMonkey is fast, glitch-free (so far!), and has all the features I want or need. It seems to have better pop-up protection than Outlook, even after I added plug-ins to Outlook.

A word of advice: Export, do not archive, your Outlook messages. SeaMonkey wants to import them directly from Outlook, not from .pst backup files.

Web page display is faster with SeaMonkey, and on my old machine that makes a difference.

Regarding WGA, If I register a product and demonstrate at that point that my copy is legitimate, that should be enough. If I call for tech support, I don't mind if they check my serial number. That's enough.

SeaMonkey has my "seal of approval." (sorry ...)

How about WGA-free Vista to home consumers? (NT)
hasta la Vista, bah-bie 18th Jan 2008
Otherwise, who cares...
There is a way to stop piracy of all softwares. Windows is a wee bit difficult, all the same it can be done. I wrote to MS about this. May be they are not confident such a thing can be done. or they don't want to pay and would like it free, or they will pirate this.
