New test build of Windows 7 SP1 goes to select Microsoft partners

By | August 30, 2010, 10:18am PDT

Microsoft has released a beta refresh of its Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack (SP) 1 to selected PC and Technology Adoption Program (TAP) partners, company officials confirmed on August 30.

Microsoft made the refresh build — the build number of which is said to be Build No. 7601.17077 — available to a select group of testers on August 27. There’s no word (so far) on whether there is anything new in that refresh.

“A private interim release went out Friday as part of our normal feedback loop with a small  group of our testers – our TAP and OEMs,” a company spokesperson told me via e-mail when I asked about the refresh.

The spokesperson said Microsoft would not comment on whether the company will release to the public another interim SP1 build before the first service pack is released to manufacturing. Microsoft officials said earlier this summer that the company is planning to deliver the final SP1 code in the first half of 2011, and the spokesperson said on August 30 that Microsoft is still on track with that stated release date.

Many Microsoft watchers, partners and customers had been expecting Microsoft to deliver the final SP1 bits before the end of calendar 2010. Microsoft officials have stressed that the client version of SP1 does not include any new features or funcitonality. (Windows 7 SP1 includes a few pieces of functionality that Microsoft hasn’t made available via Windows Update or through various security patches. Company officials said these are  “enhancements,” rather than new features.These “enhancements” include things such as support for more third-party federation services; improved HDMI audio device support; and XPS printing fixes.)

The server version of SP1 includes two new virtualization-focused features: RemoteFX and a dynamic-memory adjustor for Hyper-V. I’ve heard speculation that the server version of SP1 is what’s holding back the delivery of the client version, but have not heard this from any Microsoft officials.

Microsoft released a public beta of SP1 in mid-July.

Microsoft officials have been adamant that consumers and business customers don’t need to wait for SP1 to deploy Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 R2. Still, a number of business customers use the release of SP1 as a milestone in terms of planning their deployments of a new operating system.

hugdyn,good post!

@DonnieBoy More people care than will ever care about security through obscurity crapware like linux and mac os x.
@jamesrayg Well whether or not who cares about what, Linux is not security through obscurity, the source is available which is more than I can say for Windows. Oh wait if I were in China I could get Windows source.
@jamesrayg
Did you know that Loverock Davidson and Mike Cox are the lead testers for Windows 7-sp1,2,3,4,5 & 6. We'll know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth very shortly. Everyone here waits with baited breath for his approval.

@MrLinux - how would you get hold of the Windows source if you lived in China? Are you referring to Microsoft's licensing of the source of Windows to the Chinese government? If so, then using your logic, everyone in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, US, Japan and many other countries also have full access to the source of Windows since those countries also license the source of Windows (along with several other MS products).

And FWIW, just because the Linux source is available doesn't mean that it is of high quality, defect-free or secure. The
"many eyes" have frequently failed to identify pretty major issues with Linux over the years.
@soyousaid - Umm, not been around here long? Mike Cox is the king of satire and sarcasm on this site. I just wish he was around more often to rope people like you in.

No comment on Lovey.
@mrlinux linux source may be available (mac os x isn't) but hardly any one uses it which is why it has so little malware. It would be no more secure than windows if linux were on 90% of desktops and quite conceivably much less secure since bad guys would have the source which would make it easier to find bugs. Also you couldn't have 3 day turn arounds for patches anymore, as 100k PC shops are not going to deploy a patch with so little testing just to see their entire org. go boom. Basically everything that makes linux sexy would evaporate if everyone used it.
@SoYouSaid

Didn't you know? Lovey Dovey and Mike Cox know more about Linux than even Linus Torvalds does.

Just sayin'... wink

@jamesrayg any proof of this?

'Cause it sounds like speculation & theory by somebody who's never used Linux before.

@jamesrayg The Zune HD is a great piece of hardware, and it would truly be sad if Microsoft leaves the market. The only improvement I really hope Microsoft makes firmware-wise is to fix the occasional temporary freezing or volume/track control delays after not interacting with the device for a longish period of time. araba oyunu

Is your unintelligent nonsense. People care because Windows 7 uptake is on the rise. More and more people will be switching over in the next few years as XP support (finally) falls away, and Windows 7 becomes tried and true.

Windows 7 is on the rise, linux sits at 1% after 20 years, mac sits at 5%, and that's the way it will always be, so suck on that.

You don't want HyperV to run VMs on the client. With HyperV there's no guest OS so you don't have the kind of control that you would have with non-hypervisor based VM software. And there is plenty for the PC. VMWare workstation and a bunch of free ones: Virtual PC, Sun box, VMWare player (you can create VMware compatible VMs online and play them with the player). I like Sun Box myself.

If you really need that garbage, there are third party addons you can purchase, otherwise the UI changes are here to stay.

Adopt to the changes or die. This is how things are done in computing, if you can't then you are in the wrong business.

Change happens, and in this field if you refuse, for whatever reason, to move on, you get left behind.

Everyone complains of the "bloat" in Windows, yet when code gets removed, people still complain. Why? The new start menu layout is more functional than the old one.

And I am far from clueless, unlike a few on here.

Auto arrange and auto sort
xp-client Updated - 30th Aug 2010
The single most issue with 100+ threads on MS forums is auto arrange and auto sorting which should be optional in Windows Explorer. Even that is not getting "fixed". Even Windows 3.0 can freely arrange icons anywhere but Windows 7 can't. Just see how many people are complaining about it:

Wasn't that a much requested feature?
Cylon Centurion 31st Aug 2010
@anonymuos

To auto arrange alphabetically instead of throwing everything around? Eitherway, I find some of those comments quite ridiculous, that can easily be remedied using various software. For example Live Photo Gallery organizes my photos by month taken. If you prefer something else, there is a way to group by tags, folder, location, etc. If you need to located a folder or a file in a folder, the start menu search will find it faster than it would to take you to navigate to it.
Clearly you are not aware that Windows 95 to Vista also allow auto arrange so it's not something new in Windows 7. Not allowing free arrangement is something that's new.

SP1 for W7. I'm running W7/64 the second year after inplace upgrading from Vista64. I have nothing to complain but - access to network settings via gui - too many clicks for statistics and details, command line is sometimes another way around....
SP1? Nice to know, not sure if it is neccessary for W7, but with Vista it did miracles.
Linux? Nice, but can not use it, my SW is made for Windows..customers have windows, I do win. troubleshooting...
Every now and then I test some new version of Linux desktop - couple of days ago it was Ubuntu. Very impresive and nice, if i wanted just to surf around and use open office. And fast too.
But, it is like comparing two different cars on your market and one of them lacks the spare part and mechanics support...
