As expected, on May 20, Microsoft made the Beta 1 bits of its Visual Studio 2010 release downloable by anyone interested in testing Microsoft’s forthcoming release of its developer tool suite.

Microsoft released the Beta 1 VS 2010 bits on Monday, May 18, to TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Both MSDN/TechNet subscribers and the public are able to test VS 2010 Professional, Team Suite, Team Foundation Server and the .Net Framework 4.

A list of what’s new in the 2010 release is on Microsoft’s MSDN Web site, including everything from the inclusion in the box of the new F# concurrent programming language, to parallel development techologies, to better support for Silverlight and the Windows Presentation Foundation. And a handy list of related VS 2010 resources is available here.

Company officials have not provided a target ship date for the final VS 2010 suite, but a number of company watchers (including me) think it will ship before the end of calendar 2009.

F# is a functional language, not a concurrent
language. It might be used, as most functional
languages, for concurrent programming in nice
ways.

thanks for making the distinction

MS has emphasized its applicability as a concurrent language in some of the talks I've heard and that's what I was thinking when I mentioned it. See here for more on that:

MS has given you the pain, the pain brushes and the canvas. All of good quality, but MS is not going to teach you how to paint pictures.

Its like saying, we'll MS give us MS Word, why dont they come write my letter for me !!!

MS IDE is the flagship how for developers, and its a yard stick by which all others are measures.

It's also really nice to use.

(Would not all programming languages be "functional" languages?)

I cant think of a programming language that is "Non-functional" happy

Good to see the amazing things from corporate King -Microsoft
I downloaded yesterday and gave it a spin. The UI is pretty sexy, and I like the WPF based code editor and the ability to drag out the editor or designer windows onto a separate monitor (out of the IDE). It definitely still is a beta, as it crashed a few times. I have noticed that the ISO image size for team suite is 1.22GB, which is much smaller compared to VS2008. Another interesting point is I have a solution with 20 C# projects in it and in VS2008, the memory consumption of VS ranges between (250MB to 350MB). When I upgraded the same solution to VS2010, and opened one XAML file and one code behind file, the memory consumption as 650MB. There are definitely some performance issues with the new editor and overall IDE responsiveness, but this is Beta 1. I only had one project that would not load and it was a WinForms based project that targetted .NET 3.5 Full Client Profile. Trying to change the target runtime didn't work so that is one bug I found, but only seems to be affecting WinForm projects.
Also included in VS2010 (and included in this beta release) are significant extensions to Dotfuscator CE that permit
* the injection of feature and session monitoring (streaming usage data to a developer-specified endpoint),
* the injection of application expiry dates, and
* the injection of tamper defense and notification.

Opt-in/Opt-out logic can also be injected.

Microsoft first announced this functionality at PDC2008
