Windows 7, netbook support in the works for Windows Home Server

By | July 17, 2009, 8:13am PDT

The Windows Home Server (WHS) team announced on July 17 that its next update — slated to go to testers this week — will add support for Windows 7 clients.

The beta of that update, known as Power Pack 3, is slated to be made available to testers via the Microsoft Connect site on Friday. (Power Packs are basically the equivalent of feature packs.)

In a posting to the Windows Home Server blog, team members itemized some of the new features coming with the Power Pack 3 rollup. On the short list:

  • Backup and restore support for computers running Windows 7
  • The inclusion of Windows Search 4
  • Integration with Windows 7 libraries
  • Various enhancements for Windows Media Center, including TV archiving
  • Better support for netbooks

According to the post, the team’s goal is to release the final Power Pack 3 code before October 22, the date Windows 7 will go on sale at retail. From the post:

“Timing of the Power Pack 3 final release has not been determined. With your help to test the Beta, we hope to release the update prior to the Windows 7 General Availability date of October 22.  Power Pack 3 will be a free update to existing Windows Home Server users via Windows Update.”

Microsoft rolled out Power Pack 2 in March. Microsoft is working on a major update to Windows Home Server, codenamed “Vail,” but there’s no new word on the whereabouts of that version.

Win 7 Support?
GusRandall 17th Jul 2009
I've been running Win 7 for months and using it with my Windows Home Server without issue. It backs up files and I was able to use the WHS to restore a file that I accidentally overwrote on my Win 7 system.

Wonder what they mean by making backup/restore work with Win 7.

Maybe the final version of Windows 7

has some changes in it that will require this service pack for WHS

" I just feel like sharing , because I don't think it gets enough attention. I love my WHS."

Does it still corrupt files? That was the last attention it got 12 months ago.

Two problems I have never had.
aalhc5@... 17th Jul 2009
Problem number two fixed quickly when found (it occured under very specific circumstances and effected few people). Problem number one relates to specific security measures people can choose to or take or not...and are problems whic I view to be independent of WHS.

Like many of the petty hacks that follow zdnet, you assume you know everything and make wild assumptions about other people's experiences and experience. Let me know when you move out of your mom's basement and start dating;)

Thanks for your response.

"Like many of the petty hacks that follow zdnet, you assume you know everything and make wild assumptions about other people's experiences and experience. Let me know when you move out of your mom's basement and start dating;)"

This whole statement is unjustified and unwarranted. It usually ends with a personal attack. Oh well ... .

Have a nice day.

PS. I wouldn't attack you personally, "maybe" your ip (internet personality) wink

So it is fine for you to attack my intelligence and technical prowess by assuming I chose an insecure setup for my home network, and threaten to hack into my personal computers to steal information and eventually money (that is implied by the c$ drive commentt). But when I turn around and suggest you have assumed to much that is going to far and unwarrented?

"Like many of the petty hacks that follow zdnet, you assume you know everything and make wild assumptions about other people's experiences and experience."

That is totally justified, as you have made tremendous assumptions of my (and all WHS user's) skills. I merely point out that flaw and lump you in with many that repeatedly do that on this site.

"Let me know when you move out of your mom's basement and start dating;)"

I merely add a comical retort to point out that if you assume I am an idiot (as implied by your post) then I will assume you are a 46 year old unemployed virgin who has nothing better to do that attack other people.

WHS is not perfect, but neither is any other OS. I merely applaude its many strengths (auto-backup, easy computer restore, drive extender, media server, etc.). You chose to pick two issues which are not issues, allude to my ignorance and personally insult me. You can't be offended when I reply with the same. It is called logical reflection, where one party replies to the other in kind. It highlights the weakness of the arguments of the party being relfected, as they tend to point out the inherent flaws in their own argument style.

Funny how that works....

You sound like an angry person. I'm sorry I asked.

Sorry, no dice
aalhc5@... 18th Jul 2009
Again, you make assumptions that have no basis in the words written. I am not angry, merely reflecting your personal attack at me (that had little to do with WHS). Funny that you chose to fixate on the personal part and not respond to the actual arguments at hand.

You made a personal attack, and I reflected. That was a logical response taken without malice or prejudice to you. It reflects poorly on your argument, that in the orginal statment you made it personally insulting.

Take my response as you will, but it is the logically weak opponent that assumes his opponent is angry and summarily dismisses their points (again, like your second post, it dodges the true issue).

The fact at hand is neither of your points against WHS really seem to stand. You choose to ignore that. If anything that makes me happy, because it insinuates that I am in fact right in my support of WHS.

Funny how that works...

"The fact at hand is neither of your points against WHS really seem to stand."

What was my points? What was my argument?
You build a strew man up only to knock him down?
Hence you are arguing with yourself.

I asked a simple question about a problem WHS suffered a year ago. Where is my argument you claim I'm making. I have none. I simply asked a question.
And you want to claim I have an argument. For the record, I don't have an argument and I don't have your ip.

PS. The ip part. You wouldn't fall for social engineering would ya?
Don't answer that, I'm afraid of the answer I might get.

You should probably try not to show off your ignorance quite so blatantly. WHS hasn't corrupted any files for a long time and even when the problem did occur it only effected a small percentage of users who were using multiple drives. Further you also don't know what you are talking about when you refer to sharing your C: drive.

As to working with Win7 the system works perfectly well. I have backed up and restored (including bare metal) a dual boot system. Further I have reversed the partitions and re sized them using WHS. Originally had Vista Home premium at partition 1 (190 gb) and Win7 at partition 2 (40 gb). Reduced partition 1 to 116 gb and added the space to partition 2 by reformatting the drive, restoring the systems to new sizes while placing Win7 on partition 1 and Vista on partition 2. The only glitch I experienced with this process was the need to re-activate my Office 2007 products on the Vista partition which is no big deal.

Can you tell me ...

...where I got my facts wrong. pls? or did I state any?

"You should probably try not to show off your ignorance quite so blatantly. WHS hasn't corrupted any files for a long time .."

Like 12 months ago ? or a week ago?

I guess your objective was to try and discredit my question, eh?
Well you decide if you did.

"Further you also don't know what you are talking about when you refer to sharing your C: drive."

Correct I don't need to know, that's the job of the OP. I just need the ip to test its security before buying one. Get it now?

What questions?
bobtran 18th Jul 2009
You think that posting "old" questions makes you wise when it only serves to show your laziness.

These questions could have been answered by YOU with about 2 minutes research on ANY search engine. Instead of trying to create controversy why don't you do something original and download a trial version of the product, Test it, do the research, and then come back to us with some real questions instead of your normal flame-bait. I do however realize that this will actually require you to do some work/research instead of expecting others to do it for you. As someone else said...let us know when you move out and begin to take some responsibility instead of baiting people to see what reaction you get...This is the behavior of an immature teenager, so by all means, Grow up and try to contribute something worthwhile to forums such as these instead of posting to see your name in print.

Repeating "As someone else said" "...is the behavior of an immature teenager..." "...contribute something worthwhile to forums..."

PS. If you are interested in a free audit let me know. That's my contribution to you. wink

Agreed. I have been using Windows 7 for months on three machines and have not had a single problem with WHS. I have also done a restore operation on a Win7 machine with no issues.

Mary Jo.. What's the news with current work on the Home Server 2 release?
I've heard this will be built on Win Server 2008 R2.. However that's all I've been able to gather..
Do you know of an estimated beta program date, or some more information about how this software development is currently tracking?
