Windows 7 Release Candidate now available for unsanctioned download

Summary: From the “that didn’t take long” files: The Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) test build is available for download if you don’t mind grabbing it from (as blogger Long Zheng euphemistically describes it) “your favorite ‘content hub.’”

From the “that didn’t take long” files: The Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) test build is available for download if you don’t mind grabbing it from (as blogger Long Zheng euphemistically describes it) “your favorite ‘content hub.’”

Microsoft is expected to release officially the RC bits to its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet testers next week, and to the public on May 5. (I guess it takes a while to set up those public download servers so they won’t become overloaded like they did when the Beta of Windows 7 first became available.)

No one with whom I’ve spoken is expecting any kind of major facelift with the RC build. Performance tweaks, bug fixes — and that new “remove XX antitrust-magnet feature” option (for IE 8, Media Player, Windows Search and more)  — are all expected to be in the new build.

I’d expect the Windows Server 2008 R2 RC is close at hand, as well.

Microsoft is quick to caution users against downloading bits from anywhere but its own servers. (And I am not suggesting you should do anything illegal, just to be clear.)

But since the Softies aren’t even acknowledging publicly that they finished Build 7100 and provided it to OEMs and selected testers earlier this week, I’m doubly sure they aren’t going to verify that the 7100.0.090421-1700 is the real RC deal. So if you really can’t wait until May 5, you’re on your own.

If and when anyone happens to get their hands on the RC, I’m interested in what you think.

My 2 PCs...
Nsaf 24th Apr 2009
I have been running the beta on 2 of my PCs at home. One PC is a low end HW wise, and the other one pretty high end. I have thrown anything that one would be able to do so, and have not had any issues. I will definitely try RC as it becomes available.

So, what the hell is a "Rubberduck Rabisdon"?
If it is released to MSDN next week, I'll download from there. If it's not there by next Friday, I may have to go for the unofficial route.
It is available on the Torrent circuit. I'm like you. If anyone installs I would like to hear how it is. Maybe that could be another topic for another day

I cant wait. Widows 7 is excellent!

Since the later versions leaked won't let Norton 2009 anti Virus run, I will be interested to try the new RC and may still have to wait for Symantec to update the norton anti virus software.

Win7 - What Vista Should Have Been
joep1701 24th Apr 2009
Win7 beta runs fantastically well and fast on my older Gateway laptop which choked on Vista Home Premium. Definitely impressed and it runs, boots and shut down faster than Vista Home Premium SP1 running on my production Toshiba laptop.

Only thing missing is no Win7 driver for the ATI Radeon Mobility X700 video card in my Gateway and the Win7 does not recognize the Vista version. Hence - no Aero.

I can't wait for the official Win7 RC release. Win7 is what Vista should have been.

Than XP on my computers, so I thinkk that it was a problem with your computer if it's running slower than XP.

The only thing Vista 'chokes' on is if you have a older video card. Vista did NOT like anything made before Radeon X300 video cards, and is slower than anything with video rendering on those cards.

First time I tried Win 7 I was WOWED... I started to question why MS festered Vista on us when it could come up with something like Win 7. Win 7 ran on an old P4 system (512MB) I have just like XP, and this same system struggled to run Vista on 512 MB. I have installed every major build from 7000 and I am on 7077 now, still WOWED. I think I will stick with Win 7 and kick Vista goodbye.

EVERY OS release from MSFT is what the previous OS should have been. It's simply how they roll - letting their customers debug for them, and on their own dime.

Isn't that true about every OS? Actually, isn't
that true about every product that moves beyond
release 1?

Every product builds and improves upon what they
learn from their previous releases, don't they?

Over a month ago, we were briefed about a secret Microsoft technology.....

Not worth the effort to investigate where they got that one and who the victims were.
delete norton, and most of your problems will go away.
I am running on it right now. So far, so good.

Some of my colleagues think it is a little risky to be running "leaked" bits instead of waiting for genuine M$ bits, and if it weren't for the info I get from you and others at ZDnet, I'd probably be more cautious but, from the start, Windows 7 has been so much more stable than Vista was at this point in the developement cycles that I am pretty confident/

Just finished installing it on my aspire one. In box driver support has definitely improved, no more searching for hacked up wireless drivers.

I think I'll wait on my main system until there's confirmation on the hash checks though.

Question to the commenters
SAStarling 27th Apr 2009
Hi, all. I never upgraded to Vista on my home PC, because we use it at work and it blows in general. Will I be able to download and use Win7 from an XP platform?

Yes and no
bfpower Updated - 27th Apr 2009
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe
the XP to 7 upgrade will be a valid upgrade
path, but you will have to reinstall your
drivers and re-create your settings. See this
article:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/159933/the_xp_to
_windows_7_upgrade_path.html [edit: Copy and
paste the URL; it didn't take the whole thing).

You might want to consider backing up files and
doing a clean install, rather than an upgrade.
Especially on a release candidate. The upgrade
process is spotty enough that it might not be
the best option. Plus you will get the best
performance out of a clean install.

ZDNET Sanctions Software Piracy

There are not enough caveats to hide the truth. It boils down to corporate and personal integrity. What is the real story here?
I have not been able to get consistant video from the likes of you tube. I have tried several different browsers, reinstalled W7 at least 3 times, used a different graphics card both Nvidia and ATI Radeon cards with the same symptoms. Under windows XP 64bit, Vista Ultimate 64 bit I never experienced the problem. I am using a ASUS WS MB with 8 gig and a 9450 running at stock 2.6 GH. I have updated drivers and the system seems to be stable now that I switched to Nvidia, but no You Tube or other avis. Anyone with simular symptoms?
