Zune HD 4.5 spring update due in the 'next few weeks'

By | March 29, 2010, 6:17pm PDT

Microsoft is delivering the long-promised spring firmware update for its Zune HD over the ‘next few weeks,’ company officials said on March 29.

I received an e-mail message from a Zune HD spokesperson this evening. Here’s what’s coming in the so-called Zune 4.5 update, according to that message:

* Smart DJ on Zune HD: “We added ‘Smart DJ’ to the Zune software last fall and now we’re bringing this popular music discovery feature (and instant playlist creator) to the Zune HD device.” According to Microsoft, “if you have a Zune Pass music subscription it will pull music from your existing collection and the Zune Marketplace catalog to create the mix. If you don’t have a Zune Pass subscription you can still use Smart DJ to build a playlist from the collection on your device.”

* Picks on Zune HD
: Picks is another music recommendation feature in the Zune software which Microsoft is making available on the Zune HD device. “The Picks algorithm analyzes what you listen to and compares that to millions of other Zune users to make personalized recommendations. With this update, you’ll be able to access these automatic recommendations directly on the Zune HD device as well as on your PC,” the Softies explain.

* Browse and Stream Music from Zune Marketplace on your TV: Using the Zune HD A/V dock, you can connect your Zune HD to your TV to play your favorite videos and music from your device on the big screen. With the 4.5 update, users also will be able to browser and stream music from Zune Marketplace directly on their TVs.

* Expanded Video Codec Support: With expanded support to include MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP), which includes Xvid and AVI support, users can access broader range of video content natively on Zune HD with no transcoding required.

The 4.5 update will be available as a free download “in the next few weeks,” according to the spokesperson.

I’ve been wondering whether the Zune HD update will also add support for Windows Phone 7 devices in any way. I asked Microsoft officials about this recently and didn’t receive a yay or a nay….

It's inevitable that Microsoft eventually replaces the current Zune HD platform, with a new Zune device that is based on the Windows Phone 7 Series platform. In a similar way to iPhone and iPod Touch.

Sweet Indeed.

Some have said that the stimulus hasn't saved any jobs, but here is a case where at least one job was saved. Oregon State University Athletic Director Bob DeCarolis was considering firing their basketball coach, Craig Robinson, after an 8-11 start (2-5 in the Pac 10 conference). When word of this reached Washington , Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter was dispatched to Corvallis with $17 million in stimulus money for the university. Craig Robinson's job is safe for this year. For those of you unfamiliar with Coach Robinson, he just so happens to be Michelle Obama's brother. Just a coincidence I'm sure!

Love my HD. Works with the MS Sync in both my cars but I can't access the HD Radio through my sound systems in the cars. Can't wait to see the Zune phone!

Windows Phone OS on Zune chances
bevcat 30th Mar 2010
Mary Jo,

Just curious on what you see as the chances the Zune will eventually adopt the Windows Phone 7 OS? If you think they will, do you think it will have to be new hardware, or just a firmware upgrade?
Yea, what's going on with the apps? There is a site www.zuneboards.com that have user created apps/games, but you need additional software to be installed in order to transfer those apps to your zune. I've tried installing these softwares, but get errors. It would be nice if Microsoft would make some. I have many ideas they could add. Though I doubt they would lend an ear.

WinPhone 7 for me is an extension of the Zune ecosystem. For a long term view, you should target that platform IMHO... I will try to sharpen my Silverlight skills (maybe XNA later on) to try my hand on developing there... Download videos of how to program the devices from live.visitmix.com and download the FREE developer tools from here: http://developer.windowsphone.com
I think that there will be an untapped market here, and if you are not in the mood to come with a new idea, simply port some nifty iPhone app to the WinPhone...

Smart DJ = Awesome
AdamzP 30th Mar 2010
Smart DJ is going to be great on the Zune HD, plus the picks. Are you going to get with the Social now, Mary Jo? happy

Having the Marketplace in the HDTV dock will be awesome too. That feature was sorely lacking.
