Barnes & Noble rolls out Nook for iPad, iPhone, and PC clients

Summary: Barnes & Noble continues to roll out and rebrand their mobile ebook reading software and now has the free Nook app available for the iPad, iPhone, and PC.

Barnes & Noble recently released the Nook for Android application and at that time stated that they would be rolling out the Nook branded ereader application to replace the B&N Reader app on the iPhone, iPad, and PC. Today, they made that announcement so you can now find the iPad, iPhone/iPod touch, and PC versions to go with the Android version. The BlackBerry and Mac versions are the last two that need to be updated with the Nook branding.

These latest releases are not just rebranded versions of the last software either and offer new features and functionality. For example, Nook for iPad adds in-app content rating and an improved user interface with custom themes that you can optimize for day or night and even preview before changing. Font styles and sizes, justification of the text, highlights, notes, lending, and syncing across all platforms is supported.

Matthew Miller is an avid mobile device enthusiast who works during the day as a professional naval architect in Seattle. He is one of three hosts on the MobileTechRoundup podcast and runs the Nokia Experts website. Matthew started using mobile devices in 1997 with a US Robotics Pilot 1000 and has owned over 90 different devices running Palm, Linux, Symbian, Newton, BlackBerry, Mac OS X (iPhone), Google Android, and Windows Mobile operating systems. His current collection includes a Nokia N85, Nokia E71, Nokia 5800, Nokia N810, Apple iPhone, HTC Advantage, T-Mobile G1, Palm Treo Pro, HTC Fuze, MSI Wind, MacBook Pro, and many more, along with tons of accessories and classic devices like the Apple Newton MessagePad 2100 and Sony CLIE UX50. Matthew co-authored Master Visually Windows Mobile 2003, was a member of the Nokia Nseries Blogger relations program, and is a member of the invite-only Microsoft Mobius mobile device evangelist group. He can be found on various discussion forums under the user name of "palmsolo".

    is such a disk hog I had no choice but to uninstall it. It was either that or uninstall 20-25 other apps.

    If it were my business plan, I would target Android, as the new devices are large format (tablet) and will under cut the cost of the iPhone/iPad by a large margin.

    Also the new devices will run wifi (much faster) and not require an ATT/Sprint/Verizon/T-Mobile contract to use, saving even more money.

    At the end of the day, we want to download our books, read the NY Times, and other media online, watch PBS (or BBC), and the new devices are the wave of the future.

    "Lock-In" from ATT/Apple is not going to help the publishing industry one bit ... it is still more convenient (and much less expensive) to buy the book online at Amazon.

  • there is a kindle app for iPad and iPhone... all iOS devices..
    @Ron Anon - you can buy and read your books from amazon on any of the Apple iOS devices... where's the lock-in you speak of? Some people are so negative towards Apple they make all these false assumptions without even checking it out first.. Apple is evil therefore there's no way they would ever allow me to view my books purchased on amazon on their device... WRONG!!

    If you look at what he said: to buy the book online at Amazon, he was talking about the store, not the reader. Books bought from Amazon can be read on multiple devices by multiple vendors. Same can be said of books from Nook. Books bought from iTunes can be read only on devices from Apple. The lock in is from the store. If you buy your books from Apple, you are now locked into Apple devices.

    There is a reason why Apple does not want cross compiled applications on iOS.

  • so what does that have to do with Android.. Nothing!
    @it might be an argument for Amazon vs iTunes Store.. i.e. if i target Amazon then all my stuff is readable on all platforms via Kindle App and my stuff is DRM'd.. publishers aren't going to sell on your platform without DRM..

    and WTF.. how is WiFi going to be faster on android than on iOS devices? iPad, iPhone 4 is 802.11n.. and yes you can get an iOS device without a data plan.. at least here in Canada you can...

    There is more lock in from Apple when it comes to book publishing. That is indisputable.

    At first glance at The Nook for PC I was impressed. I recently read a couple of novels on Nookstudy and Nook for PC is supposedly an improvement on that!
    I have about 100 ebooks in the EPub format on file. And there they remain.......... I have not as yet managed to get one loaded into Nook for PC?
    Once I manage, or if I manage, to do that I may well have a different view of the tool. Hopefully a "Eureka" will pop up soon!

    A quick Google of "nook for pc epub" found these instructions from HowTo Geek:

    ...basically, in nook for PC click "my library / my stuff," click the "Add New Item" button, navigate to your file and click "Open."

    Also try the free app Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/), which will connect to most eReader devices, and can automatically convert ebooks and other econtent as needed on-the-fly without you having to think about it. If you like it please consider a small donation, so their programming team can buy lunch occasionally. wink

    Right now, my opinion is not particularly good. I have downloaded the Nook for PC onto my netbook, windows 7 and it show zero books. My Nook actually has 112. So what happened to them? Is it possible that B&N doesn't really want you to use your PC for this function?

    I downloaded Nook for PC. I like it better than the Kindle for PC appl.
    I have lots of epub books.
    Any way I can enmass add them to Nook. I tried putting them in "My Barnes & Noble ebooks" directory, but the appl doesn't see them. I have been able to load them one at a time thru the appl, but I have "lots" of books and can't add them all that way. Any suggestions?
