BestBuy.com is offering the HP TouchPad for $100 until supplies run out

By | August 21, 2011, 4:57am PDT

Summary: Less than 15 minutes ago, I went to BestBuy.com and successfully ordered one and will see it arriving sometime this week.

There’s been a tremendous amount of press around the HP TouchPad since HP killed it off. At first, Best Buy was sending all of its inventory back to HP, then early this morning it reversed its decision and is now offering the HP TouchPad up for sale again, starting at $100.

I spent some time late evening Saturday trying to get my hands on one, and it was either sold out, or not coming up in search results. However, less than 15 minutes ago, I went to BestBuy.com and successfully ordered one and will see it arriving sometime this week.

I’m still not sure what made me pull the trigger. I had some time with the device shortly after launch and it didn’t come close to the iPad. That said, Matt Miller found a lot to like, even though there was room for improvement.

We’ll see if the homebrew community brings about some interesting products, and maybe even a port to Android. In the meantime, though, if you’d like a pretty solid, inexpensive tablet, and don’t mind that the support will be non-existent from HP, go pick one up at BestBuy.com while supplies last.

Non existant support? That's not accurate, I do not believe. Plus, there are many plusses of the Touchpad ovcer the Ipad. I gave my Ipad to my brotyher, and like my Touchpad more than my Ipad. You just cannot beat webOS as an operating system.
@Detfan
Many plusses. It works so well that it killed one company and public humiliated another. But for $99, I'll toss it to my kid to screw around with.

Order confirmation?
x21x Updated - 21st Aug
I had ordered at like 6:45am(CST), I got my order confirmation email... however click the oreder status link in the email, and it shows no orders in the account an hour and half later... Anyone elses showing up?
@x21x I ordered mine about the same time you did CST and I checked and it is marked as unable to cancel because it is already processed for shipping.

I hope that Best Buy's site is correct. Hope that you have the same luck.....unless mine gets cancelled. Then I hope you have better luck.
Why would anyone want Android over webOS?
@knh@...

Easy.

Android is being supported by a company with money. WebOS is not.
I tried going to the local Best Buy and Staples this morning. Best Buy's site didn't even check store inventory but it opened an hour before Staples. An employee there on smoke break said they were out of stock (this was before the BB opened). I then went to Staples which said they were in stock on the website at this particular store, but an employee there said that they were also out of stock and the inventory on the website was of "broken" units (also before they opened). I think Best Buy started selling the tablets at the reduced price yesterday afternoon (central time), but I'm not sure of the Staples. Seems more likely that the store employee(s) wanted to keep them for themselves or to sell on eBay. Oh well.
Has anyone found one anywhere recently (as of Sunday 1:19pm Central time)?

It's a good deal
Robert Hahn 21st Aug
I've never seen a TouchPad, but I assume it has a functioning web browser. If it does, then the $100 price tag forgives a lot of sins. It's hard to justify an iPad or Android device at 3, 4, or 5 times the price when a web browser is "good enough" for 99% of why you'd want a tablet.

There's no question that this 'fire sale' is going to punch at least a 250,000 unit hole in the sales of the other tablets. We won't know who took the brunt of it for a couple of months yet, but the production planners at Samsung, Moto, and Asus are sitting on the edge of their seats looking for clues to how bad it is.

Its not in UK
p.vinnie@... Updated - 22nd Aug
HP touchpad is not on Sale in UK for some reason. Even Bestbuy, Amazon, PC world are selling these products at their full price (350 GBP - 425 GBP) which is ridiculous.
I never understand why there is always such massive difference between US & UK prices for all electronic items?
Also it is really annoying when deals never reach to UK!
BestBuy online is out of stock and [based on what I was just told from the Westfield, IN store) the stores were told to send them back to the manufacturer..... Kind of makes this a non-story since Best Buy returned what they had, so there is no stock to run out of.
Here you have to go to the store to get the deal. No such deals online.
Now I found out why they flew off the shelf. I heard about the price drop today and went to buy one to keep and use. Everyone in Columbus is sold out. Now they are showing up in mass on craigslist for double what people paid for them. Guess I'll have to wait another month or so before the aftermarket prices come down. So now I wonder what percent of buyers actually wanted to keep their Touchpads.
