Can Apple launch a tablet device and do what it did with the iPhone?
Summary: Both Andrew and Jason posted the news about the latest Apple tablet computer rumor that has the 9.7 inch device slated for an October release for $800. As a guy who tried a few Windows Tablet PC devices in the past, but rarely even used the touch screen functionality of the Tablets I at first just kind of shrugged off this latest rumor. Then I paused and thought a bit more about what Apple did with the smartphone market after launching the iPhone and now I think there are some real possibilities here for Apple to again demonstrate how something like a large screen tablet can be done right.

We have had Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Nokia, and Palm smartphones around for years when the Apple iPhone was launched. Those of us in the mobile industry and those in corporate environments were fairly familiar with wireless data access, but it seems that very few consumers fully understood what a phone could do for them. Apple changed the game with the iPhone launch and their huge marketing campaign that made people aware of what these devices could do. I actually think that Apple and the iPhone probably helped out every mobile operating system as it brought a level of understanding to the entire mobile phone community and then people started realizing there were more choices available.
The Tablet PC and UMPC market never really took off for Microsoft and was a pretty niche market with a few selected areas of industry (primarily healthcare and field workers) that embraced the technology and devices. Netbooks swooped in at low prices and in form factors that people are used to working with and I think essentially killed off any possibility of Tablet PCs ever taking off. Tablet PCs and UMPCs were priced too high for consumers at $1,000 to $2,500+ with little real advantage over a much cheaper notebook.
If Apple can launch a tablet form factor device for $800, people may find a way to afford it. Apple is going to have to "tell the story" (something my buddy Michael Gartenberg likes to say) of why and how this tablet device can improve your life and be an enjoyable product. Apple will probably sell at least a million right off the bat to Apple fans, but they also need to go beyond that base to have a successful product. Given what Apple has done with the iPhone and the App Store I am actually excited to see what that looks like in a device of this form factor.
I don't think they can just release a MacBook without a keyboard and a touch sensitive on-screen keyboard and have a product that everyone wants to own, which may be why it is taking so long to come out with a tablet Apple device. Will we see some new text input technology? Will we see some new way to manage and use your media content from the Apple tablet? Will social networking, Internet browsing, and sharing media with family and friends have a whole new look? There are some cool things Apple can do here with this form factor and we will just have to continue to wait and see if this rumored device ever appears.

Talkback
smartphones
with lots of features people just didn't know about before the iphone came
along and apple changed that with their all so powerful marketing mojo.
oh, the denial of the the microsoft press! do you really want to say that any
of these devices had a real browser before the iphone was introduced? a
desktop class browser that was usable? an appstore? multitouch? media
handling like a next gen ipod? visual voicemail etc. etc. you must be kidding!
just admit it: apple reinvented the phone and since then all your beloved
other companies just try to copy it. it's not about a feature list that isn't
worth the paper it is written on. it is about the ui and implementation of
features. the magic word is usability. that's the only thing that counts.
(for instance: have you seen how you can make, trim and share videos on the
3gs? have you ever seen something only remotly similar on another
smartphone?)

reading) on a smartphone and the alternative: a laptop or
desktop computer.
What if the 9.7 inch screen (which would be as easy to read
as a hardback book) could be inserted into a dock. Apple
has experience with docking, and a tablet could travel to
work, drop in a dock, and be part of a large worktop
screen, a standard keyboard and mouse.
Could such a portable "bridge" device be the best of all
possible worlds?
Tablets work for me
Think of it, a real notebook that you can use to do real work, and with the help of a Bluetooth headset, answer your phone calls at the same time. Maybe I can stop carrying around an extra suitcase full of batteries, chargers, mobile devices and computers.

Price
I have been expecting something like this for quite a while: and by my
calculations the entry price should be $499.
Okay, maybe $599. But no more than that.
Apple has a chance to seize a whole new market segment, based on the
success of the iPhone and the Kindle
They will succeed in this ONLY if they can convince people that the value of
the device is worth the cost.
People have these built-in psychological thresholds for the price of a gadget.
That's why you see stuff at the hardware store priced at $4.99 instead of
$5.25.
People just won't pay over a certain perceived limit for a consumer device.
And in this economy, Apple would be foolish to go after the luxury market.
So, would YOU pay $499 for a super-iPhone, that you can
a)play music and videos on,
b)surf the internet,
c) get email,
d) sketch,
e) do math homework (Maple),
f) make and edit video and audio recordings,
g) read eBooks.
h) etc, etc?
I think a LOT of people would be interested. (Mostly the people who don't
already have an iPhone or iPod Touch.)
But at $800, not so much.
Apple probably won't make the mistake they made with the iPhone,
introducing it as a premium price and then lowering the price.
I think they've learned that lesson, finally.
They may also keep the price down by offering expansion packs.
For example, the base model will certainly do WiFi and Bluetooth.
But the cellular modem people have talked about, that will probably be via PC
card slot: those are already on the market, and have been for years.
Re: Price
At $800 I think a Tablet Mac will also sell out out just like the iPhone and people will buy it even if they have an iPod TOuch or iPhone.
I have 2 MacBook Pros, a Mac Pro, 2 iPhones and an iPod Touch and i would certainly find a way to come up with $800 for a Tablet even if I don't really need one.
Nope.
And Apple does not know how to do cheap. They do make
quality stuff but it costs more $$$ and that is not the market.
The displayed "prototypes"??? What are you going to do to
cover those screens? A flip cover?
I just don't see them doing well in that market.
The ideal tablet
9 or 10 inch touchscreen tablet with full OS X, ability to
use iTunes and also any Mac software, full file system,
ability to attach keyboard and monitor.
You could use it as a desktop if you attached a
keyboard and a monitor. The keyboard would be a
same as a MacBook keyboard with an opening for the
touchpad. You insert the tablet there, it would
automatically act as a touchpad.
I doubt they would do that, it would cannibalize their
other products... but it would be cool.
I also predict that it will have a 3G or WiFi and Apple
will start selling books, newspapers and magazines on
iTunes.
RE: Can Apple launch a tablet device and do what it did with the iPhone?
possibly as early as September. I hope this will be
another great rally for apple earnings. I will buy one
of this for sure. The iphone started to be too little
to stay all the day looking things. I am a great fan
of apple product so started collecting all the
information (more than 200 sites) about Apple
Tablet(News, Videos, Pics, Pre reviews, Rumors etc.,).
