Samsung BlackJackI thoroughly enjoyed using the Samsung i320 Windows Mobile Smartphone and if the battery life would have been better I might have stuck with it. Paul had a chance to check out a cousin of the i320 a couple months ago, specifically the Samsung Blackjack. The device is very similar to the i320, but had a front facing camera for video calls, 3G network support, and slightly different hardware button design and layout. U.S. customers will soon have their own chance to own a device called the BlackJack on November 16th when the device launches with Cingular. You will be able to pick one up for only US$199.99 after a US$100 mail-in rebate and two-year activation.

The BlackJack, Samsung SGH-i607, will run on Cingular's new 3G network and will included Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP stereo support and Windows Mobile 5.9 with Direct Push. The ultra-slim device will have a QWERTY keyboard and 1.3 megapixel camera as well. A couple of cool multimedia functions will be support for XM Satellite Radio through Cingular's XM Radio Mobile service, support for Cingular Music and Cingular Video services. WiFi is not included, but with the 3G connectivity WiFi becomes less vital on a mobile device.

The review statement that Wifi is not important is simply industry hogwash. In the US the only people who use data plans are those whose employer pays for them. Until mobile phones are either available with low-cost data plans or are available with Wifi, they will be relegated to a tiny segment of the population. Cingular might wish that consumers will sign up for their data plans, but nobody can even understand their data plan offerings, much less be willing to pay for them.
