Even an unlocked 3G iPhone will still be an AT&T iPhone

By | April 30, 2008, 7:35am PDT

Summary: Saul Hansell wrote up a good response to the $199 iPhone rumor. He stated that the report may actually mean that AT&T wants to lower the price of the iPhone and raise the price of data plans and/or Apple will start selling unlocked phones. However, even if the 3G iPhone is sold as an unlocked device, it will most likely only be usable in 3G mode with AT&T in the United States.

Even an unlocked 3G iPhone will still be an AT&T iPhoneSaul Hansell wrote up a good response to the $199 iPhone rumor.

AT&T uses the 850/1900 MHz frequency spectrum for 3G data (850 MHz for voice). The only other major GSM carrier in the U.S., T-Mobile, hasn’t yet rolled out its 3G network, but when it does (rumors indicated the switch may be flipped tomorrow) it will use the 1700 MHz spectrum for download and 2100 MHz for upload (850/1900 for voice) and thus no AT&T capable 3G devices will give you full 3G data access with T-Mobile. You may get EDGE (2.5G) data access and you will be able to make and receive calls though.

Also, Europe and other countries use a 2100 MHz frequency for high speed data, but even then this is different than the U.S. T-Mobile spectrum (now that can be confusing). Then we have Sprint, Alltel, and Verizon who are all CDMA carriers that have a completely different infrastructure and won’t be compatible with the 3G iPhone.

There is a slight possibility the 3G iPhone will have a tri-band 3G 2100 MHz radio and if that is the case then you could use 3G data in Europe and when you travel. It still will not work with T-Mobile’s network though and thus will have limited carrier support in the U.S. whether it is locked or unlocked. I suppose Apple could also add in another radio (and antenna) for T-Mobile USA, but since this is the smallest U.S. network and has its own band I don’t think I would get my hopes up for this scenario.

The next version of the iPhone will be a 3G iPhone and AT&T may raise the monthly data fee, however with Sprint and Verizon already offering 3G data at US$15 and US$30/month I don’t think AT&T can raise it too much more and remain competitive. Would they then have a standard iPhone data rate and a 3G iPhone data rate? We’ll just have to wait and see. I am sure we will continue to see lots of rumors as we wait over the next month or so for its release.

too much drama for a phone apple has lost it's appeal to me and other customers, it's just a phone treat it as such buying a apple iphone is like investing stocks on the stock market . it's a mobile device sorry apple you lost this one. once when you think about apple you think about life being simple since this iphone has been release it has turned innocent people into criminals or human rights activist for personal property activism " i buy it it's mine you cannot lock it" . now come on apple do something before you become Microsoft on your self proclaimed commercials on television. if this is the carrier drama i have to face for modern or new technology keep it. i will wait on superior phone makers like Samsung, Nokia and black berry and others to perfect this touch screen revolution. apple take your carrier monopoly money making scheme and get going. rest my case.

AT&T charges people who use Smartphones with keyboards $40/month for the PDA connect plan.

For example, the Blackjack has a keyboard and accessess the Internet and e-mail using the 3G network.

That's pricey compared to the iPhone, which has the potential to download much more data!

That's right.
spookyone1 24th May 2008
It's always been my argument that iPhone really is carrier
subsidized in the sense that I could save $240 on data
access over the course of my 2 year contract on the
cheaper data plan for the iPhone. It puts the iPhone's price
on a par with my Treo's subsidized price. (Data on a
phone AT&T deems a PDA phone--the PDA Connect plan-
-has been reduced to $30US. If you're still paying $40,
have AT&T fix that.) I choose not to buy one at this time
for other reasons. (Mostly, some third-party apps that do
things the iPhone can't do--yet.)

I don't believe it's the lack of a keyboard that causes the
lower data price for iPhone. I believe it's a roundabout
subsidy. I also believe that if iPhone became subsidized
that it would go on the standard PDA phone plans
(including PDA Connect) and be just another phone on
AT&T's network. The keyboard excuse is just the easiest
way for customer service explain the difference between a
smartphone and a PDA phone to people when phones like
the Blackjack are marketed as smartphones but AT&T
classes them as PDA phones.

If you need internet access on your phone $30US really
isn't that big a deal.

Change frequencies?
pecosbill 30th Apr 2008
So, could a hacker change the frequencies in code or is that hard wired?

No hacking of frequencies
palmsolo (aka Matthew Miller) 30th Apr 2008
The frequencies are built into the chipset so no amount of hacking will let you add frequencies. From what I understand, antennas are also included for the different bands and would require more space than is probably available.

An odd situation
Ken_z 30th Apr 2008
Since the rumors indicate that ATT's
discount will not be available on iPhones
sold by the Apple Store we might well
have a situation where Apple sells an
unlocked iPhone while ATT's iPhone is
locked.

That would make for a strange situation.
Customers would need to decide if they
want to pay the full price for an Apple
Store phone and stay with their carrier.
Doing so would eliminate the "exclusive"
features, like visual voice mail. It would,
however, allow for easy use of any apps
now available, or to become available
with the SDK.

There is also the potential of other
carriers providing a competitive
discount if you buy an Apple Store
iPhone and then sign a 2 year contract.

With less than a year on the market the
iPhone has caused changes in the
industry - it'll be interesting to see how
the iPhone impacts the market over the
next 2 - 3 years.

If AT&T were smart they would match sprint for sometime as
far as data plans...a subsidize Iphone would give them
tremendous market share and allow them to essentially kill
off sprint (I am a sprint person....right now) and compete w/
Verizon.

CDMA networks
lrf2005 1st May 2008
According to what I've read so far, the 3G chip Apple may be using for the iPhone supports WCDMA networks, a move intended to break into the Japanese market. Wouldn't this indicate that the 3G networks Verizon and Sprint have rolled out might be supported?

Does anyone have the specifics on the T-Mobile 3G frequencies?

I saw that 3G included both voice and data. But what are the frequencies?

My unlocked HTC P3600 has tri-band data: 2100 for Europe and 850/1900 for USA. I have been waiting for ever for T-Mobile.
