First thoughts on the Evernote Web public beta and the incredible search technology

By | February 27, 2008, 11:17am PST

Summary: The Evernote application has been compared with and seemed to play second fiddle to OneNote as a note-taking application on Tablet PCs, but I think their latest development will go a long ways towards making Evernote the first choice for mobile enthusiasts. The public beta of Evernote Web has begun and I am lucky enough to be included in this public testing phase. As you can see on the Evernote Web site, you will now be able to use Evernote on your Mac, Windows PC, Linux PC, and various mobile devices. While this cross-platform functionality is the big selling point for using Evernote “in the cloud”, the functionality that continues to amaze me is their text recognition technology.

The public beta of Evernote Web has begun and I am lucky enough to be included in this public testing phase. While this cross-platform functionality is the big selling point for using Evernote “in the cloud”, the functionality that continues to amaze me is their text recognition technology.

When you search your notes Evernote finds the search term inside images, poorly handwritten text, and standard text. It is incredible how well their technology works at finding the text you want and it will revolutionalize what types of information I now plan to capture with my mobile devices and turn into notes. I plan to use the digital camera on my devices to take photos of business cards and then when I need to find someone I can do a quick search in Evernote. I often get business cards for people that I don’t add to my contact list, but using Evernote with a camera will be a perfect way to make sure I can find that person or company again when I do want to connect. You can even save your searches as a Saved Search for later reference too.

Evernote Mobile on the Advantage

This upcoming web-based version of Evernote works best with the Windows (soon coming to Mac) desktop version since you cannot yet sync your notes taken on a Windows Mobile device with the stand alone Technology Preview for Windows Mobile version of the application to the web version. (See update below for info on a newer version that does sync with Windows Mobile.) You need to first sync to your desktop version and then sync to the web. You can send photos and text notes to a special email address that is provided with your Evernote Web account from your device though so that may even be a better and faster way to get notes into your library. You can also create quick notes on your mobile device through Evernote Web in your supported web browser.
Evernote Mobile on S60
It is still a bit early in the beta, but here is my current results using various mobile web browsers on various mobile device operating systems:

  • Opera Mobile 8.65 on HTC Advantage: Lets me log in, then stuck at loading the notes.
  • Internet Explorer Mobile (touch screen) on the HTC Advantage: Works great in this browser and allows you to create text notes, view your current note library, and conduct searches of all your notes. Results of search terms are highlighted in yellow and are easy to view as well.
  • Internet Explorer Mobile (non-touch screen) on the T-Mobile Shadow: Works just as well as on the HTC Advantage. There are even keypad shortcuts to notes and creation of a new Quick Note (0).
  • Opera Mini on the Shadow: Long message about Firefox 2 and incompatible browser.
  • S60 browser on Nokia N95: Works like Internet Explorer Mobile on the WM devices, but also gives a thumbnail preview of the note like the desktop client.
  • Safari on iPhone: Works just like the S60 browser mobile client, with the thumbnail preview as well.
  • Mozilla browser on the Nokia N810: I get the following error warning using the Mozilla-based browser built into OS 2008, “The Evernote Web Client Beta does not currently support Firefox 3. In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out support for more and more browsers. In the meantime, we hope you’ll come back with Firefox 2 to check out the beta!”

Evernote Mobile on Shadow I’ll continue using the beta for the next month and will write a much more extensive review when the application is released as a full version since I am sure there will be fixes as people continue to provide feedback on the beta test. If you are interested in being considered for the public beta, signup here.

UPDATE: I just finished having a chat with Mr. Phil Libin, Evernote CEO, and he made me aware of a couple of functions I missed in my initial trials of Evernote Web on mobile devices. You can actually scroll to the bottom of the page on your device and select the hyperlink for settings to change to thumbnail previews. You can also select how many results you wish to see in your note list (the default is 9 to easily match to a phone keypad).

An astute reader also discovered that you can go to http://preview.evernote.com/m and use the client on the Nokia N810/N800 and Opera Mini browsers (I just tried it on my new BlackBerry Pearl).

I also mentioned the Windows Mobile technology preview version that is a stand-alone client, but there is an even better Evernote for Windows Mobile beta client that you should download as this now syncs to the Web version and lets you have more control over where your note gets uploaded to (specific notebooks). I plan to try this on the Shadow and Advantage this weekend.

UPDATE II: Evernote has started a new program where those of us who are in the beta program are given invites to send out for those who want to join the beta program. If you want to try Evernote, then shoot me an email palmsoloATgmailDOTcom and I’ll send one to you until they are gone. I have 5 invites in my account available to start with.

I'm testing to see how long it takes
efandrea 9th May 2008
I've used my iPhone to email a photo of a CD cover to my evernote account. There is a word on the cover that should be easy for evernote to index if indeed it is OCR'ing images. I'll let you know how long it takes to get indexed. It's been an hour and I still can't get a return for that word when I search.

looks cool - I signed up to receive an invite and installed the software. Worth a look, especially if it works with my mobile device!

Can Evernote do this...?
Qbt 27th Feb 2008
Not to downplay Evernote, but it sounds like OneNote has been able to all of those things for a very long time now.

But, can Evernote do this...

Search for text withing recorded audio files? OneNote allows you to record, let's say, a lecture, and then afterwards you can do a text search and it will find all the locations in the audio file that match the text.

Very cool...

Does it OCR printed text?
CobraA1 28th Feb 2008
One of the biggest things Evernote seems to boast about is its ability to OCR text from images. I know that OneNote can do some sort of OCR on its special ink format - but can it OCR text from, say, a JPEG image?

In addition
CobraA1 28th Feb 2008
In addition, they seem to be saying that it's available for any device, including mobile devices such as cell phones. This is possible because your stuff is stored on their servers as well as locally. OneNote definitely can't do that.
Thanks for the comments about the mobile browser compatibility. You shouldn't see the warning messages about supporting only Firefox if you go to:

http://preview.evernote.com/m
The site doesn't always know that you are using a mobile device. When you go to http://preview.evernote.com/ the site does it's best to figure out whether to display the mobile or regular version of the application.

Also, we try to guess which mobile browsers will handle the images well, but you can override the setting.

Support for IE and Safari are coming soon.

Although Palm is struggling, they're still in business and there's still a lot of Treos and Centros out there - it would be nice to support Palm devices as well.

I personally own a T|X.

Opera Mini is available for Palm devices - but only with a JVM installed, and since both Palm and IBM have pulled the download links for the JVM from their web sites, it's only available via torrents sad.

Windows on Palm
jackbossmax@... 2nd Mar 2008
But it will work on Palm Treo that are Windows based, correct??
I think that is the way to go. I use Onenote, but do not want to be confined to one computer or to need to drag my tablet PC with me to every meeting.

I just bought a Nokia 810 and would love to use a bluetooth keyboard and web storage to keep my notes etc accessible from wherever and accesible using any computer.

Moreover, I also use an iMAC desktop that until now, has not been able to write or access the ONenote files.

I eagerly await the fully functional version of Evernote.

No, and I can't find the misspelling

Actually, it did not catch it and trying the Firefox spelling and Word dictionaries as well as Googling it doesn't help. Care to offer the correction to me? Thanks.
