Forget the Amazon Kindle Fire, the BB PlayBook is now the best low cost tablet

By | February 23, 2012, 5:45am PST

Summary: The PlayBook 2.0 update is out and takes a good 7 inch tablet and makes it excellent. I am a huge fan of the 7 inch form factor and am pleased to see the PlayBook finally where it should have been last year.

Thanks in large part to the success of the Amazon Kindle Fire, the Android tablet market is finally heating up and starting to impact Apple iPad market share. With the new OS 2.0 update available for the BB PlayBook, I recommend people seriously consider one for $199 instead of the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire if they are looking for more of a tablet than an ebook reader.

The Kindle Fire is excellent if you want the ultimate Amazon experience, but if you want a richer tablet experience then check out the updated PlayBook. You can get the Amazon experience on the PlayBook, but you can’t get the PlayBook experience on the Kindle Fire. These devices share a common look and feel, which is one reason I loved the Kindle Fire since I find the PlayBook design and form factor to be extremely desirable. In addition to the slick UI of the QNX-based PlayBook OS, you can now run Android apps on your PlayBook so you get the best of both worlds with a much more powerful piece of hardware.

Advantages of the PlayBook over the Kindle Fire include:

  • Dual high quality cameras and a microphone
  • Bluetooth wireless radio
  • Integrated GPS
  • HDMI out (outputs EVERYTHING, unlike the iPad)
  • Dual stereo speakers
  • 1GB of RAM and more internal storage (16, 32 or 64 GB compared to 8GB)
  • Seamless connectivity with BB smartphone
  • Fast, powerful web browser made even better in the 2.0 update
  • Much nicer user interface

At $200 for both the Kindle Fire and the 16GB PlayBook, it really is a no-brainer to pick up the PlayBook instead now that OS 2.0 is out that addresses most of the original shortcomings. I bought a 16GB model to test out this week at Best Buy, but am enjoying it so much I just ordered a 64GB model online and will be returning the 16GB one in a few days. The next thing you know I will be getting another BlackBerry smartphone :)

The Android apps available in BlackBerry App World are slowly rolling out and so far I have loaded up Dolphin Browser, YouVersion Bible (works perfectly on the PlayBook), and Angry Birds Seasons. My friends at CrackBerry also have some great discussion forums that show you how to get the Kindle, Dropbox, Google Maps, and much more sideloaded onto your PlayBook. They have another post that lists .bar files for Android apps you can install on your BlackBerry PlayBook.

Another cool promotion for the OS 2.0 update is the free versions of Modern Combat 2 and Asphalt 6 Adrenaline that RIM has available in BB App World right now. I encourage you to go and download these before the offer is gone.

Couldn't agree more with this article and I went the same route. When I found out about OS 2.0 fixing most of the original shortcomings (no email, no calendar, etc.) combined with the ridiculously low price I decided to buy one a few days ago just to play with it. Liked it so much I also have a 64GB version on order now. I have side loaded some Android apps and working like a charm so far.

The web browser is bar none the best mobile web experience going and has full flash support if you still need that. I expect to see more Android apps being ported over to the Blackberry store pretty quick as they seem to run pretty seamlessly for the most part. And for those complaining about storage, you can download "Box" from the Blackberry store for free and they are giving 50GB (FIFTY GIGS!!) of online cloud storage for free if you sign up for their service via the Blackberry app.

I don't think I could give up my iPhone 4S but my iPad 2 may be headed for sale shortly. The Playbook isn't perfect but OS 2.0 goes a very long way to making this a great tablet and it should only keep getting better from here. Cheers!

Great comeback RIM. OS 2.0 provides the high quality, well engineered competition to 'the others' that the greater public has been waiting for in the mobile space. The fact RIM has just done a Lazarus like turn around with the PlayBook can only be good for the consumer - with genuinely good competition now available versus the incumbents.

I've been waiting (and hoping) to say these words for the last couple of years to Apple & Android ...

Unless those cameras are fighting each other it should probably read "dual."
@dsf3g Was the very first thing I saw in the entire article as well.
@Aerowind : He He - I guess the days of editors and writers ever winning spelling bees are gone, eh?? Even with electronic assist, if it isn't used, it is worthless.
@dsf3g, I'd pay good money to see that matchup!

"So, Monsieur iPad, we meet again! En garde!"

(Unless they're using dueling pistols. Then I'd head for the hills.)
@dsf3g I hate it when cameras fight. Why can't we all get along...
No MicroSD no Sale. I like QNX OS but the lack of support for additional storage is a deal killer.
@mrlinux
You can get additional storage by using wifi from your computer. I can link with my playbook using wifi and it shows up as a network drive.
Additionally if you choose to jailbreak your playbook you can hook up a usb drive to the playbook. I haven't tried the new os (2.0) yet to see if that feature is now built in, but it can be done.
@damndirtyapes
How well does that work on the subway, or in the backseat of a car, or on an airplane, or the hotel in Cancun?

I don't mean to be too snotty - if you primarily use your tablet at home, what you suggest makes plenty of sense and is pretty great.

But if you primarily use it to bring media or light computing 'on the road', the wifi solution won't do, and external USB storage options get cumbersome.
@mrlinux
For a high end tablet like the iPad, I agree, no external storage, no sale. However, RIM is now (smartly I think) marketing the Playbook as a low end tablet, and for a low end tablet no external storage is something I can live with....for $499.99 you definitely have the right to expect that 'everything' would be included', but for $199.99 you know that you're not getting the most advanced hardware on the market.
@Doctor Demento

No external storage available for the Playbook? Or did you mean no external storage available for the iPad?

I know that external storage options for the iPad have recently become available. I use, on occasion, a 500 GB wireless external Seagate GoFlex Satellite and WiFi transmitter for my requirements. There are similar products available for the iPad ecosystem.

As for external storage options for the Playbook, I can't give an opinion on that.
@Doctor Demento

Funny thing is, it's the best tablet out there. And yes, I've used all the iPad, Android configurations out there.
@ClawDawg

You're right, that IS a funny thing! I mean...it was a joke, right? Definitely a good one.
You can get the storage you need in a B&N Nook.
@mrlinux
I definitely agree with you. The ability to use Micro SDs is what sold me on the Nook Tablet.
@mrlinux

You're telling me you need more than 64 G of storage at a time? Common. Apple fanboys crawling this site as per usual. Bet $5.00 you've never even touched a Playbook. The new 2.0 OS is lightning fast and with the new 1.5 Gigs of ram with the new 7" coming out with Near Field Communication as well as the 10" set to come out near Christmas, watch out iPad! Even the remote control option using the Bridge feature on my Torch and the new look of the App world is nice to see.
@Clawdawg I always love the "Watch out iPad when product X comes out" statements. They're always entertaining.

"the 10" set to come out near Christmas" really. that's what you got.. 10 months (or 2 iterations of the iPad away) and that's what RIM it's fanboys are boasting.. an additional half gig of ram and 10" form factor. solid.

Why do iPad users care?
ryork272 25th Feb
Whats with themart and wasbitobiko? Why do care so much that some people have the audacity to actually like a product not called iPad?

I have both the iPad2 and the PB. I was a vocal critic of RIM for all their broken promises. I was happy to see the co-CEO's finally resign. However, I can honestly say that the new upgrade is kick ass. The new client apps blow away iPad2's weak email and contact clients.

I have both products. Until you both experience them, simply shut up and listen to more intelligent people.
@mrlinux
I know I had posted ealier, but I had to add one more option for storage. It works if you have a blackberry phone, but through the bridge you can access all the files available on your phone. And BB phones have a microSD port for additional storage. In addtion you can tether to your phone, but as I haven't tethered a phone I don't know if this would provide a solution for you.
Hope this helps, Cheers.
@mrlinux : Get a Droid phone - a bit smaller, but just as capable (or more so) and includes microSD...

and it includes integrated Google spyware.
@mrlinux Your BlackBerry smartphone IS your external storage. The playbook links, via bluetooth (BlackBerry Bridge), to your phone and you can access your files on your PlayBook. Unlike the iPhone, BlackBerry Smartphones do have memory cards, so there's the solution.
this is spam or badly written ... whichever of the two ... i'll go for spam advertising... talk about a tech blog being spammed!!!!!!
@Mohater

Is it really so horrible that a blogger at ZDNet would think for himself and draw his own conclusions about products rather than going along with the crowd?

Amazingly enough, it turns out that the ZDNet blogger who has the most positive opinion of the products every other ZDNet blogger despises, i.e. Blackberry, Palm and Windows Phone 7 is also the ZDNet blogger who has the most knowledge and experience with mobile devices....funny how that works. It's almost as if his opinion is based on actual knowledge or something.
@Doctor Demento yeah, and it's funny how every other person is a follower with no experience and just plain wrong except you and the ZDNet blogger...weird how thinking that you're right works and makes a believer feel like any other opinion is wrong, huh?
@trefire
Yeah that is what he was implying. Funny how the doctors innocuous defense of the blogger can set you off yet Mohater's baseless venom against the blogger's opinion illicit nothing.
Look.. Admittedly, I have zero experience with BB os2.. but the ****** taste that I do have after using BB phones won't even give this thing a fair shake.. and that's the wall BB is running into.

The tablet is now justifiably a contender even against the iPad. Haters will hate, but the proof is in the software. Use it and you wont regret it.
@John_Carlos You are trolling right?
@Bates_ No. Have you tried 2.0 with someone or something showing you all that has changed? Its Nice. That's all I'll say.
@Bates_

Clearly you are. What do you have to add?

The PlayBook is simply an unbeatable value. Next time spew facts.

I love Playbook OS 2.0

Using my Blackberry as keyboard to write this post. Takes a little getting used to, but I can use the Playbook as a laptop now, without carrying around any extra gear.

And yes, I can use the BB as external storage. I do, for that matter.
App selection is fantastic and asphalt 6 is amazing.
@sagec Yeah well, it now has many Android Apps.
Asphalt 6 proves I should NEVER be allowed behind the wheel of a car... (grin)
But yes, it is amazing and would be even better if I could stay on the road.
Hi @sagec,

Alex from RIM here. Thanks for your feedback on the app selection. If you???re an avid Video Chat user, like me, you???ll definitely want to check out this post on our Inside BlackBerry Blog by RIM Product Manager Vivek Gupta. Hi Alex
thx-1138_@... Updated - 23rd Feb
Though not a Blackberry of PlayBook user, i would like to just say the development teams at RIM have done a fantastic job in turning the PlayBook experience 180. You, the designers and developers, are the backbone; the nerve center for RIM. You are all to be commended for the excellent improvements made to the platform.

I will be honest with you, i have been a vocal critic and 'doubter' - but mostly due to your org's former heads Balsillie & Lazaridis. But that's digressing from what has all the makings of a great departure from the previously poor executive direction and thinking at the very top of RIM.

I sincerely hope that PlayBook OS 2.0 proves to be as competitive, successful and lucrative to RIM as it deserves to be.

+100
Been rocking the 32gb model since before Christmas. Amazing device - OS 2.0 really gives the platform a new lease on life. Fast, fluid and powerful. The Kindle doesn't hold a candle to the PB!

It is an absolutely amazing machine. Comparing Kindle to Playbook is like comparing 1986 Hyundai Pony to 2012 BMW M series...
@ps2012

And the iPad is like a Bentley. Classy and comfortable but you pay way too much for what you get.
@lepoete73 You've never driven a Bentley. Amazing acceleration, handling and breaking for such a big car. Rear end pucker value a solid 9.

To answer your question, yes I have.

They are worth every penny you.
People with Bentleys tend not to drive themselves.

Not to sure about the Ipad 2 through, cheaper hardware about that either match or beat it. The software is its best part, it good in the UI despite for me that is not worth the extra cost.
