Free bumper case for iPhone 4 but you have to wait 3 to 5 weeks

Free bumper case for iPhone 4 but you have to wait 3 to 5 weeks

Summary: Apple came through with its offer for a free case, but unfortunately there's a bit of a backlog with getting them out the door.

Today Apple released an app that lets you order a free bumper case for your iPhone 4. It's a pretty straight forward process that simply involves you downloading the app, entering in your Apple ID, and then selecting the case you want. Apple is even offering up other options, besides just its bumper. And if you already bought a bumper, Adrian has the details on how to go about getting your money back.

So, what's the catch? As the title of this article states, you go through this relatively effortless process only to find that you have to wait 3 to 5 weeks! At any rate, it's free but waiting that long is just too long, in my opinion. As a result, I've already started sourcing some other no-name manufacturers in hopes of finding ones that are in stock at Best Buy or other retailers.

As for the free case, Matt Miller is definitely not a fan of the whole process, and again calls for Apple to have just released a phone that works in the first place.

I actually don't mind the process at all, and actually found the ordering to be even easier than the processing of a rebate that I had to go through when I purchased my original iPhone and then Apple offered some money back in the form of an Apple gift certificate. Of course, I would prefer to not need the case at all, but as I've been able to confirm multiple times now, by simply placing my pinky on the spot that's the separation of the antenna, the case is needed to avoid sudden call disconnects.

So, now I can either wait 3-5 weeks for a solution or go source a random case from a store. Since I can't keep disconnecting calls, I'll be trying to find one this weekend and will report back as the weekend progresses. Any recommendations for non-Apple bumper options?

  • The risk you take in purchasing a newly released item

is that you don't get a chance to read the reviews, and you may be stuck with a piece of garbage. At least in this case you had a 30 day window to rectify the situation, but since you chose not to take advantage of that, then you have to stick with the consequences.

Apple did mess up and they are trying to rectify the mistake (though they could be a little less arrogant about it). If that's not good enough for you, then by all means you should reconsider whether or not you want to be an Apple customer.

Apple just can't win. The free case app fails for some users - myself included. I own a new iPhone 4, and do love it disproportionately, but the first time I downloaded the app to my shiny, if reception-impaired, device, running the app produced an error screen saying my phone didn't qualify for the free bumper, with a "need help" 800 number. After 30 minutes on hold, I was instructed to delete the app and redownload. Really.
It worked, and my free case is on the way, but I'm further humbled by my addiction that in addition to waiting in line for the phone itself for almost 8 hours after preordering, I waited on the phone for an additional 30 minutes for the case...
  • here is the bad part...

if you buy an iPhone 4 now.. you have to wait 3 weeks to gt your iPhone... but they have no way to get a free bumper with it until you already have it.

So wait 3 weeks to get the phone, then you can order a bumper and wait another 3 to 5 weeks to get the bumper... that is kind of ridiculous

  • Apple & Cosumer Care -Does it exist?

Once again another setback once again for Apple it will be interesting to see what's next in the news regarding iPhone issues (antenna, manufacturing for the white iPhone) and their steps to refund cases won?t make up for the iPhone 4's lack of function over form.

It's a shame to see so many issues with the iPhone 4 after so many people waited for it's release. What's more of a shame is that it seems Apple knew about some of these issues already, such as the problem with reception.

But Apple have created such a loyal following that people may just put up with what issues there are for the sake of owning the latest Apple product.
Personally, I'd be happier with an older iPhone - at least then the issues are all ironed out.

However, it's also interesting to see how much excitement new technologies can bring. New technology and innovation is important for new business, illustrated by entrepreneurship grants and new business competitions like

    Guess it's not all bad!
  • Case Suggestion

I bought an Incipio Feather Case when the iPhone 4 first came out. I don't have any of the reception issues at all, but I wanted something to protect my phone from bumps and scratches. It was about $30 with shipping and has a really nice texture to the case and doesn't add much bulk and hardly any weight to the phone (it's a heavy phone as it is).

It's a great case that comes in a whole slew of colors at a great price. One problem to note: I paid for overnight shipping, but Incipio was so backed up trying to get cases out for the phone that they were a day late shipping it to me so it was really 3 days before I got it rather than 2. Other than that one little hiccup, it's an awesome case.
