Froyo (Android 2.2) officially available on HTC EVO 4G

By | August 3, 2010, 10:40am PDT

Summary: Flash, sharing applications, camcorder with flash, and more arrive on the HTC EVO 4G

On Sunday Matt Miller wrote about his experience using Froyo (Android 2.2) on the HTC EVO. At the time he obtained the update from HTC’s website. The update was not the official one that Sprint is releasing, but was more than functional and Matt covered the enhancements available with Froyo.

Now we’ve received word, via GearDiary, that HTC and Sprint have officially started pushing the Froyo (Android 2.2) update out to subscribers.

Since I own an HTC EVO 4G, I immediately checked for the update, but was told that my software was up to date. I then turned on WiFi, checked again, and was greeted with a message offering me the update.

I’m not sure if it was a coincidence with turning on the WiFi, but for whatever reason, I now have Froyo!

If you’re wondering what features will come with Froyo, the folks over at AndroidCentral have put together the list below:

  • Ability to share applications
  • Display events and birthdays from Facebook on Calendar
  • Use camera LED as flashlight
  • New user interface for the FM radio
  • Add unknown users in Facebook as friends in Friend Stream
  • Photo Gallery supports Facebook comments function
  • Send contact as vCard using SMS
  • Addition of MMS slideshow editor
  • New pre-loaded widgets including Calculator, FM radio, Message list view, Profile settings and Ringtone settings
  • Camcorder can use camera flash so video can be shot at night or in low light
  • Flash 10.1 support
  • Numeric PIN and alpha-numeric passwords to unlock screen
  • Search widget and search bar able to switch to search in different types (web, specific application, or all)
  • Adjustable alarm volume
  • Android Market widget allows installation of applications on SD card

If you want to see the majority of the features in action, be sure to check out Matt Miller’s first look.

I’ll be trying out all of the features above, but I’m most excited to see how much faster the interface is. After using the Droid X, I was finding my HTC EVO to be a bit sluggish. Hopefully Froyo will give it the boost it needs.

  • Stupid product names
Froyo? What consumer really cares that the internal OS is something called "Froyo"?

What's wrong with Android 2.2, which is easy to understand, and the average person can assume is newer than something called Android 2.1, or 2.0?

It was stupid when Microsoft departed from the easy to understand windows 95-98-2000 sequence in favor of "XP" and "VISTA", and it's stupid that Android is doing the same thing.

Interesting though, that with the exception of Office XP, Microsoft kept a numerical designation for Office versions.

One would think that from a marketing perspective it would be better for the consumer to readily see their version is "old" and thus be motivated to upgrade.

Yep I got froyo today. In fact im writing this from my evo with froyo. The web browser is so much faster its insane. And you missed a few things in the article. Apps now support all degree orientation. Meaning you don't have to hold the phone with the buttons to the right for landscape. YouTube app changed and now has a separate menu before watching a video. The news app now supports landscape orientation aswell. And the email app changed with there beong more icons overall. And those are just the things I have ran into in the past couple hours. All very nice.

We're (wifey and I) starting to get psyched about our TMobile contract expiring this Q4, and it's looking more like we'll go with EVO/Sprint. We live just below Atlanta's 4G area, but I work well within it. Imagine that...point-n-click to download a FREE OS upgrade. Imagine that, point-n-click to dowload a FREE OS upgrade. That's not a typo...I repeated it for those who live in Redmond and who just spewed beverage all over their PC.
