Hello Hulu Plus, can my Roku now let me cancel cable TV?

Summary: Roku just announced a content partnership with Hulu Plus and it looks like I can finally cut the cable TV service and enjoy the latest shows on my TV.

SHARE:

I only watch a few select shows on TV because I am just too busy with my three daughters and life in general and really hate paying something like $75 a month for fairly basic cable TV access. I have the newest Roku XDS and have been hoping that someday there would be enough content on it to let me cut the cable TV off and it looks like that may just be possible this fall now that Roku just announced that Hulu Plus is coming this fall. I received my beta invite to Hulu Plus, but have held off signing up and paying the $9.99 per month fee because I didn't care to watch content on my iPad and computer. Now that the Roku will give my Hulu Plus access on the big screen I see Comcast cable TV going away very soon.

While I enjoy the current Roku Netflix streaming integration and tons of other enjoyable content, the fact that I will now be able to watch every episode of the current season of shows from ABC, NBC, and Fox I think the Roku becomes an even more compelling product than the Apple TV. You will have to pay the $9.99 monthly Hulu Plus fee, but there will be no additional cost to allow the Roku to bring that content to the big screen. My primary shows include The Office, Law and Order, and Parenthood and they are all available via Hulu Plus.

I do enjoy watching sports, but honestly I don't have much time for it and if I want to catch the occasional NFL game I might as well save some money and just go to the local bar to enjoy a good game. Does this deal with Hulu push you to cut your cable TV service? If not, what will it take?

Before you go crazy go check out www.wisecast.tv. Then you can cut your cable.

  • What if Comcast is your only ISP option?

I don't know about anyone else, but Comcast limits my Internet cnsumption every month. At this point that's not an issue but if I start comsuming all of my video over the 'Net, then bandwidth caps become a big issue indeed.

    • Which is why they and other companies have started

this. One way or the other they will get your money. Never thought giving these guys a legal monopoly was a good idea and I think time has proven me right on this.

  • How's that work on multiple TV's?

If I buy 4 Roku's (1 for each TV in my house) will that 9.99 allow me to use the account on every TV simultaneously, or would I need an account for each box?

@John Zern I have the same concern. Does anyone know how multiple TV's would work?

Most of what i watch is on USA or TNT. Can't cut unless they have those stations.

@ladyhenry A lot of USA's programming is on Hulu, but no TNT unfortunately. They do post a lot of episodes on their website, but in a clunky interface that's nowhere near Hulu's.

We need a solution for live sports feeds before the cable cord can be cut

I cut the cord. I had FiOS TV and paid more than $130/month (with four HD TVs, set-top box rentals, etc.) I ditched FiOS TV (kept FiOS Broadband) and went with an OTA HD antenna and four Roku boxes. Saving $130/month and LOVING IT! Roku with Netflix is perfect. Only costs $8.99/month (okay...I'm saving $121/month) and get us everything we need (and a lot more.) Will be nearly perfect with Hulu...but we're not longing for anything else. Would highly recommend this to any/everyone. Best choice made in a long time. AND...if you're thinking about Apple TV or Google TV, forget about them. Roku is less expensive and does everything you need. Apple TV actually does quite a bit less and costs more.

I cut the cord. I still would love some TNT or CW (The Closer, Supernatural, Leverage), but am happy with the combination of USA so far. I have Hulu Plus and Netflix, plus Crackle (free movies), and HSN/QVC and a few other free and some pay ($1.99/mo type) channels, so I'm pretty well set. For the amount of time I spend, I can always find something to watch, new or old, movie or series. Could NOT be happier. I have AT&T DSL, with no CAP at $35/mo. I suggest you Comcast people go to AT&T DSL, it streams just as good as ANY cable speed. And I only have the MEDIUM speed, yet I have NO issues using my laptop and watching my Roku at the same time. I'm in HEAVEN!!!
