Hulu Plus now available on Roku boxes for $7.99 per month

Summary: Hulu rolled out the Hulu Plus channel for the Roku and also knocked down the monthly subscription fee to just $7.99 per month. Can it replace your cable now?

TOPICS: Hardware, Mobility

I wrote about Hulu Plus coming to the Roku back at the end of September and have been holding out on starting up my subscription until that channel was added to the Roku. I am pleased to tell you that the Hulu Plus channel is now available with a subscription price of $7.99 per month. I immediately subscribed and setup my Roku XDS and installed the iPad application so I can now view Hulu Plus content when I travel with my constant travel companion.

You might notice that the new subscription price is $7.99 per month compared to the preview price of $9.99 per month. Hulu stated they will credit back the difference for those who were already subscribers, which is a nice gesture. All new subscribers will get a one week free trial too.

When you subscribe to Hulu Plus you get the ability to access the service from a number of devices, including the Roku and iPad. Other supported devices include connected TVs, Blu-Ray players, other set-top boxes, the PlayStation 3 with Xbox 360 support coming soon, and the iPhone and iPod touch. You can check out the walk through video of Hulu Plus and the Roku blog post on the topic. Note that you get one free month of Hulu Plus with the new purchase of a Roku device through 15 December.

Now that I have my Roku and iPad setup with Hulu Plus, I plan to check out the content and see if I can truly cut the cord to the cable.

  • Still Need Live Sports

I'd like to cut the cable cord, too, but I really want live sports in HD with 5.1, which isn't available yet via a streaming source, so I can't cut the cord.

I have HULU on ROKU, too, and think it is cool, but I'd like it if they could increase the rapidity of when they post the shows and give me a bit wider selection.

AppleTV better than ROKU for Netflix, in my opinion.

@dbutdorf I watch every cowboy game (including MNF games) in full *uncompressed* HD over-the-air with a good-old-fashioned antenna hooked up to my TiVo HD DVR. Combined with HD streaming on the Roku, I have year-round HD sports without cable. As for sportscenter, I don't have that addiction, but will watch it from time-to-time on the TV at the gym.

Just signed up for HuluPlus. Then an hour later, cancelled. BE WARNED. I found a referral code so that it became "2 weeks free." After I cancelled I found that they are still charging me $4 and change for an entire month. So there is nothing FREE about it. This is misleading and deceitful. it is a total ripoff.

All I wanted was streaming on Roku for my current season shows. Hell's Kitchen, for instance. Well, they don't offer most all of the current popular shows. They don't have the same content that is FREE on the website even! I browsed through their content, and it is all old and worthless. It is over 100 old movies that no one cares about and crappy old TV shows that no one cares about. At least I can catch up on HAPPY TOWN. I should have known better.

Hulu PLUS does not mean normal Hulu content PLUS more, it means "different content." It should have been called Hulu Different. Or Hulu Ripoff. Or Hulu Minus would have been more accurate. MINUS the good content. MINUS my money.

Good job, Hulu, you just scammed $4 and change off of me. I feel like an idiot for being excited about your service.
  • I love my Roku!

Getting Hulu on Roku just made it even better :)
