iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

Summary: Don't give up--the iPad 2 may still be available at your favorite retailer

Matt Miller has a great summary of his hunt for an iPad 2 yesterday. For this reason, I figured they would be sold out everywhere.

Well, earlier today I was talking with a friend who had been browsing the local Best Buy. He has no immediate need for the iPad 2 since he already owns the original. That said, I confidently mentioned that they were sold out, of course. To my surprise, he informed me that they had plenty in stock.

So, before you hang your head in shame in your geek circles, waiting patiently for your iPad 2 to arrive in 2-5 weeks, do what Matt Miller did and call around to Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart and see if you might just be able to get your hands on one.

Since I also cover iPad news on this blog, I'm now tempted to go try to track one down myself. The distortion field must be penetrating my logical judgement, since I don't need one, but now am thinking that maybe I should get one.

Matt's experiences today (Saturday): I just wanted to chime in and let you know if you are in Washington State you may still have trouble finding them. I went to one Best Buy and called another and neither had any in stock today either. I think living in a region with a significant tech influence (Microsoft, Nintendo, and more) may result in us having far more purchases and less availability. I was able to pick up a green Smart Cover and the last camera connection kit though so today's hunt was still worth it, just bagged some smaller game.

Yep, you too can get a fragile over priced device with light bleeding around the LCD!

    • It isn't more fragile than other tablets, especially since it's not plastic

@Peter Perry: as to cover glass thickness, it no thinner than in Xoom.

And, iPad 2 is much thinner, weights way less, works hours longer on battery, and actually has tablet applications (65000 against below 100).

@denisrs actually the glass more than likely is thinner than the xoom, if you watch the video where they pulled it apart you would see that.

And .2lbs isn't way lighter.

The old I pad averaged an hour longer than the Xoom and speculation is the 2nd Gen is in line with the xoom but, it takes just over an hour to charge the xoom and about 5 hours to charge the ipad.

As for the Apps, that's okay, the Honeycomb tablets are getting more and more apps everyday and will probably catch Apple by the end of the year.

However, the glass in the I pad 2 will still be thin, the speakers will still be Mono, the LCD might still bleed light and you'll still be stuck at whatever memory you buy... oh, not to mention the cameras will still suck and the apps will'be tuned to the lowest common denominator which is the single core ipad.

      • Speculation is rife.

        @Peter Perry
"speculation is the 2nd Gen is in line with the xoom"

        Speculation, need say more.

"probably catch Apple by the end of the year."

        Speculation again.

        "LCD might still bleed light"

        And more.

"the apps will'be tuned to the lowest common denominator which is the single core ipad."

This is where speculation has failed you. See link below.

Oh, and did we mention speed difference. Ouch. See link below.

        @A Grain of Salt

You are right about speculation, truth is, most areas the iPad 2 doesn't stack up well against the Xoom.

As for the Apps, there could be 65k right now that run fine on the Xoom but havent been optimized graphically. I have found several not listed as being updated but they scale fine and work great even with the Honeycomb soft buttons. This might be speculative but given history it will likely happen.

As for the Graphics, that is not reality as there are too many variables, we have to have more details and even anandtech admits benchmarking the tablets for comparison is tricky. Reality is these two are probably very comparable in real world implementation.

But even if that one area is in Apple's favor there are many more that it fails on.

@Peter Perry Awwww are we a little sad the the iPad2 has already outsold the Xoom?

LOL. You noticed the Green-eyed monster posting out of fear too?

      • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@athynz not at all, I know I have the better device, I just like rubbing it in. :-D
        slickjim
      • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@athynz peter perry likes to rub it in because he's insecure about his purchase. i mean, if he was totally happy about his XOOM why would he be searching articles on the iPad 2 and commenting? right?

      • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@Rick_K @ blueturtles I did notice that... total insecurity and a bit of buyer's remorse... just like a lot of Xoom owners who took back their Xooms and got iPad2 instead and saved money. Like you I'm thinking he's here commenting and bashing the iPad because of the insecurity and buyer's remorse.

    • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@Peter Perry that's as opposed to not being able to get a Xoom because they can't market them?
      dheady@...
      • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

        @dheady@...

why are XOOM people always putting down people who want the iPad 2? I don't see any iPad users putting them down.

There is obviously some sort of jealousy going on. If the XOOM users were so secure with their purchase of that device, then they'd have no reason to rub anything in.

The fact that PETER PERRY is rubbing it in means he's insecure about the iPad 2.

    • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@Peter Perry You're funny. Just buy the iPad 2 already. You know you want it. I mean, why else would you land on this article?

    • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@Peter Perry And yet that "fragile overpriced light bleeding device" outsold your precious Xoom despite your predictions to the contrary... Hmmmm could it be that the Xoom is an overpriced buggy product and people who bought it realized that and took it back to buy an iPad2?

Suck to be someone who is so emotionally involved in the success of the Xoom right about now...

  • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

@Peter Perry Rubbing it in?? I wonder why it's mostly Android users who feel the need to 'rub it in'. Good job admitting you are a nice person... not.

The two devices are quite different, and each has advantages. Stop arguing like a kid which is the best - it's a personal thing and not an absolute opinion. I prefer iPad 2 b/c it works today, instead of promising to work tomorrow (flash, 4g, sd card, apps), and iOS isn't nearly as buggy as Honeycomb (again, just right now, not speaking of the future).

Could it be that being in "Microsoft's Turf" caused Apple to short that particular sales region? Not saying that they "wouldn't" do it but .... You know "penalize" the competition.

  • RE: iPad 2 may still be available at Best Buy and other stores

Actually I went to St. Louis Metro area Bestbuy stores for the past last 3 days and 2 Apple Stores here and none of them have in stock. And they have a huge list of waiting. Bestbuys are taking $100 for advance booking and giving away Gift card for the same value. So it doesn't have to be "regional" effect. It is just "Apple" effect. . I heard from all of those Bestbuy stores that majority of people who bought iPad2s as soon as they were released for sales were owners of Xooms and they have high return rate on Xooms. IMO, Xoom is doomed and probably HTC Flyer has a little chance if they price it properly and they have better brand recognization than rest of the android makers. Too bad HTC Flyer comes with Gingerbread instead of Honecomb though.

I think it's funny that some of you Apple's get REALLY OFFENDED when someone points out the flaws in a Apple product mass hysteria and name calling breaks out lol, GMAB!! totally unreal but this makes for some the most entertaining chatter on the net. Back off me I myself have a IPad but I also know that what people have camped out for is purely hype honestly the Xoom is a Better Product and if it had an Apple on the back it would easily sell for 700.00 base model but its not so it is what it is right?...
