Summary: Kevin and I covered both the Amazon Kindle Fire and B&N Nook Tablet in fine detail in this podcast and actually went over an hour discussing just these two devices. Which one do you prefer?

There were two very hot devices released this week that I know will be top sellers this holiday season and in MobileTechRoundup show #253 Kevin and I discussed just about every aspect of the devices. The Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet are in both of our hands and we went through the hardware, user interface, content, comparison to each other, and even comparisons to existing 7 inch Android tablets. It was clear what Kevin's plans are, but I am still not quite sure what my plans are. It was clear to both of us which device we would get right now if neither of us already had 7 inch tablets though so listen to the show and find out. Also, let me know what device you chose and why as I continue in my decision making process.

    The podcast sounds identical to the roundup 252. Did you upload or link the wrong one? You talk about the Lumia which was covered in the previous one. At 44:28 you say "so they can make up some money there" and the exact same words I compared to the other podcast. If there is a full podcast review of these two I'd like to hear it.

    • Sorry, I missed the direct link correction

      @Bookmark71 I'm sorry you wasted your time listening to the last podcast again. I forgot to change the embedded link for the file. It is updated now so everything should be good to go.

  • Maybe you could provide a brief summary???

    I can't spend an hour waiting to get your overall impressions. Maybe you could provide a couple paragraphs summarizing your final conclusion(s). That would be very useful.

    So, if the Kindle Fire ecosystem is just a launcher, then could we buy a Kindle Fire and install another launcher (such as Launcher Pro) to revert it back to Android? And then switch between?

      I'm not quite sure what you mean by "just a launcher" but if you mean accessing content via streaming, keep in mind that if your not in a good wifi connection you get nothing unless it's in the 5-6 GB that's left over after the OS uses the first 2. No 3G yet. And of course that'll cost extra when it does become available.

        In the program, I believe it was Mr. Miller who said that the K-Fire ecosystem is actually just a launcher that Amazon installed over Android. He was able to download it separately online, and install it on his Galaxy Tab. Thus, he has Fire on his Galaxy. I'm just wondering if the opposite is also possible. Can we side load a different launcher onto the Fire, and then restart it to that launcher?

    You guys should check things out before spouting your collective "wisdom" I have a Nook Tablet and I've charged and transferred files with every kind of micro usb cable you can imagine. In fact, I haven't even taken the cable and charger that came with my NT out of the box yet as I was considering returning the NT within 14 days. However after a few days I've basically turned my tablet into as complete a device as I could want. I've just used my Android phone as a source for apps. Astro File Manager creates a backup APK which I transfer to the NT either by cable or email attachment. Then click and it installs. Funny how some of the same apps on the Nook and Amazon markets cost $$ but are free from the Android Market (other than having ads which are relatively unobtrusive). I've got Docs to Go (free today from the Amazon App Store) but I already had transferred it from my phone. Dropbox, Box.net free account, KeePassDroid, etc. etc. FBReader while not necessary gives network access to more free books than I could ever read in a lifetime as well as access paid books. I just wish I could download them to the 11GB of internal space the B&N reserves for B&N content. That's the only drawback I've found in the NT. As I type I'm doing a test conversion of some Hitchcock movies to view on the NT. Never mind streaming video and audio, that's a non-starter AFAIC.

      @bunkport

      What did you use to root the device or are these apk's installing without root access? I have a NC that I run CynogenMod on and love the smart little tablet I have at my disposal. The processor enhancements and addition of a mic are making me consider the NT but I'm still not sure I need to at this point if that's all I'm getting...
