I was skeptical when I heard rumors that a new iOS 4.2 GM Seed had been released. First off, usually when you hit GM Seed, you don't need another version. Second, Apple had yet to alert any of its developers in its "official" way that a new GM Seed had been released.

After doing some digging it does seem to be that Apple has kicked out another iOS 4.2 build (8C134b). The interesting thing is that this build has only been released for iPad, with the iPhone remaining on build 8C134.

Apple has not officially confirmed this to its stable of developers, but The Telegraph is reporting that the official release of iOS 4.2 is now slated for November 24th.

I've heard from a number of sources that the latest iOS 4.2 on iPad build is much more stable than previous releases. Those same people were not suffering from any known Wi-Fi issues, though, which is the apparent cause for the need for Apple to release another GM Seed.

If you're wondering why everyone is so excited about iOS 4.2 for the iPad, the release will put the iPad on par with the iPhone, allowing it to multitask and also take advantage of the new AirPlay features, which will let users stream audio and video from the iPad or iPhone to any compatible receiver. At this point the only known receiver is the new Apple TV, but deals with other manufacturers are believed to be in the works.

I can't wait for the AirPlay feature. I tend to shoot a lot of photos and videos with my iPhone and the ability to instantly show those on my TV via Apple TV is something I'm really looking forward to. I would also assume that an Apple TV update will show up soon, too, since right now you can share photos and videos from your computer running iTunes, but there's no specific AirPlay capability being highlighted.

  • Wait, what?

"...it does seem to be that Apple has kicked out another iOS 4.2 build (8C134b)." OK, fine. But what do you mean by "I?ve heard from a number of sources that the latest iOS 4.2 on iPad build is much more stable than previous releases." Is that "latest" version 8c134b or 8C134? Which version do your sources have? Because if it's 8c134b, then Apple has definitely kicked out a new version (unless you're suggesting Apple rev-ed the build number but not the codebase), but if your sources are still on the previous version, then the conjecture about the wi-fi problem is pointless. Either way, you guys seriously need some editors over there.

  • lots of companies have announced AirPlay compatibility..

Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), JBL and iHome all have existing product or announced products.. Denon and Marantz both have AV Receivers today that are AirPlay compatible or AirPlay compatible through a firmware upgrade..

as usual trust anything you read here with a grain of salt. A LARGE AS A BUILDING GRAIN OF SALT as it's probably not vetted well at all.

    Isn't it 4.0.2?

In any case it will ship on the 24th - unless they find another major bug or two.

Well, I found the article informative, even if your sources are a bit muddled and info about 3rd parties adopting airplay are NQR. I am now also waiting with anticipation for the AirPlay feature.

And matthew_maurice, I agree about the editor remark, but content is being churned out from all points of the globe (sometimes at $4.00 per article for 100 articles). The editor to writer ratio is getting worse by the day. There may be no hope.

I joined the developer network to get access to 4.2 on the iPad. It works great and the wifi issues are resolved. Airplay is nice, but it would be better if I could use it to connect the iTunes media on one Mac to the speakers on another on the same system. There are still some things with Airplay that need to be improved, but I think everyone will like the ability to multitasking. For example, I can now skype while checking email without dropping the call.

I am running the ios4.2(8C134b) on my ipad and I dont have the AirPlay option? I have all of the other features described in the reviews, but no AirPlay. Any Feedback would be appreciated.
