Microsoft learns from Google and gives employees Windows Phone 7 devices

By | July 23, 2010, 6:51pm PDT

Summary: Will seeding the phone with “softies” get Microsoft some recognition for its latest mobile OS?

From what is now the tweet heard around the world, ZDNet’s own @maryjofoley retweeted @simchabe’s tweet stating that:

“Every single Microsoft employee will get a windows phone 7″

I mentioned in the headline that this is a page out of Google’s book. If you remember back to December 2008, Google handed out G1’s as a holiday bonus (thanks Gizmodo). Now Microsoft is handing them out, not as a bonus but probably as a way to get everyone excited about the company’s latest version of its mobile OS.

I had some time with Windows Phone 7 a while back but Matt Miller has been covering it all this week, starting with his definitive guide. According to Matt, the OS is in great shape and could actually be a contender. But Matt is a hard core early adopter and ex-lover of Windows Mobile, and right now we’re only hearing impressions on the technical preview. To that end, non-techs haven’t been as positive.

So, what’s the best way to generate some positive hype? Give a ton of “softies” a new device with the brand new OS and get them talking to their friends about it.

With this latest reboot of Windows Mobile, Microsoft needs to hit it out of the park. Their best option is to get the hype going now, and what better way then to seed the device with all of its employees.

I’m still undecided as to whether or not Windows Phone 7 is going to be a contender. In my mind, Android picked up where Windows Mobile left off, and even with a new interface and a speedy OS, Windows Phone 7 might be a bit late to the smartphone party. That said, Microsoft can afford to sit in a channel for a while, so as long as Windows Phone 7 ships, you can expect to see updates coming fast and furious, not to mention tons of apps coming from existing Silverlight and XNA developers.

  • Really?
    @mb01915@...
    You mean like Windows 7? Or the XBox360? Or profits of $4.52 billion for the quarter ending June 30?
    I wish the company I work for could 'miss' like that.

    @mdemuth

    You mean like Zune? Or Vista? Or the Kin? Or Windows ME, Windows Tablet PC, Bob, MSX, MSN or WebTV?

    Without the three legged stool of Windows, Office and Server Microsoft would have been relegated to the dustbin of history. They lose billions and billions of dollars every year on half baked ideas outside of these three properties. Don't believe me? Take a look at their 10K reports:

    Microsoft Mobile has NEVER TURNED A PROFIT in the history of the company. So given their track record Windows 7 Mobile will be a dead parrot.

    @MisterMiester
    Zune? It is more popular in its venue the Apple is in desktops. So Apple is a complete failure with desktops? Vista? What, 2x-3x the entire install base of Apple?
    Yes, give me 'failures' like that. Hell, at least Vista was usable after the first 6 months. How long was OSX out before even Apple thought it wasn't such a POS that they would ship it as the default OS?
    oops, that is right, time to move the goal posts. 'Success' redefined so MS looks bad.
    If gutless shills like you weren't so pathetic, you would be funny.

    I think it will sell to those who don't want an iphone (maybe because its overpriced, bad antenna or lack of individuality) and those who want a farr more integrated experience then android offers. However, if android 3.0 delights... there'll be little market.

    @jacke444 I think it will sell to those who don't want an iphone (maybe because its overpriced, bad antenna or lack of individuality) Don't get out much do ya? The iPhone is right in line pricewise with every other smartphone out there - with the exception of when VZW does their 2 for 1 promotion. The "bad antenna" thing is way overblown although it is an issue and as for the lack of individuality if you are talking about the lack of use customization I agree but it you are talking about the form factor that is a different story.

  • i was a die hard WinMobile guy for years.......but
    I lost my faith & intrest as MS failed to keep up with the other OS's. My phones would lock up daily after owning them for a while, lack of cool apps, lack of higher end phones...... then I found Android & my search for the right OS for me was over. Can't do an iPhone cause AT&T coverage sucks where I live & play. Plus I'm not a fan of touch screen only phones. I have a company issued Blackberry, so been there, done that.

    I'm willing to give MS another chance, but I am going to watch this Phone 7 OS closley & see how they do first. I believe it will be pretty good out the gate but will have major issues discovered with MS being very slow to respond.....

  • Well they have to do SOMETHING...
    Don't know if this will work, but if they don't do anything then we know it won't work at all.

  • If they market it as aggresivelly as Apple
    and other companies have their wares, it will appeal to many once they know it exists.

  • Unfortunately...
    @Mister Spock Microsoft is generally appallingly bad at marketing. Their Win7 campaign was surprisingly good - but with their mobile products, they don't sell directly - so they expect their partners to market. Their partners on the other hand don't consider the OS to be important and so generally don't market that as a feature...

    So...

    This is going to be ugly.

    Microsoft needs to make their own branded phone - except - well, they did - the Kin - and they couldn't market that either. And the Zune - the Zune HD is an awesome media player - but it's only available in the US and there's 0 marketing on it.

  • Not sure I will call the "Win7 was my invention" good
    Better than the previous ad campaigns, yes (specially compare to the ads for Vista) .... but good. NO. They were just dumb. Nothing memorable or anything that was talked about by the water cooler @ work.

    In fact, the KIN's tv ads (where they brag about how good the product was for sexting and how it can help a girl meet the local sexual predator) was more successful, because at least it got people talking about it. Granted, the talk was nothing but negative, but it got them talking.

  • Didn't MS tried that with WinMo 6.x???
    MS gave some employees a WinMo phone .... but only a few actually kept and used it. Most pawned them and got an iPhone .... causing MS to temporary ban on the iPhone ... but bad publicity made them change the policy.

    Not trolling .... that is what actually happened.
