New iPad commercial modeled after classic Newton commercial

By | May 13, 2010, 12:01am PDT

Summary: Apple’s 3G version of the iPad is now available and Apple just released a new commercial that is modeled after one of their classic Newton ones. As a Newton owner, I found the commercials enjoyable and spot on.

Special Report: Apple iPad

The more I use my Apple iPad the more I enjoy it and continue to believe it is quite magical in many respects. I read about the new Apple iPad commercial (embedded below) over at TiPb and as a guy who still owns a fully functional Newtwon MessagePad 2100 I thought the new commercial modeled after the classic Newton commercial (also embedded below) was awesome and wanted to share them with you.

And here is the classic Apple Newton commercial to compare to the new iPad commercial.

I don't "hate" the iPad. It's definitely not for me. It lacks in SO many areas - it's a non-starter. I do, however, take issue with the advertising. To call something "magical" when it's nothing more than a fancy device that wants to be a laptop but falls FAR short, is way overkill for an ebook reader, it's dishonest.

Maybe after the shine's worn off and you run across a situation it can't solve easily, then you might understand.

Sheesh... Magical? Seriously... It's a piece of TECHNOLOGY. Nothing more. It wasn't made by elves or pixies or leprechauns or any other sort of 'magic folk'. It was made by Chinese wage slaves in a factory.

Given the iPad is basically a giant sized iPod Touch, it's been done before - by Apple.

Many technologies have magical impact

You might have to walk away from windows to experience them.

Apple again having an impact. No surprise. Nice Ads, the Newton one takes me back.

Magical impact...

@Richard Flude

Sure... If you've got some modern gizmo and you take it to some utterly backward corner of the world and run into a bunch of natives that have never seen anything like it - you might be able to get away with that sort of assessment.

But seriously... This is 2010. There aren't any corners like that left.
@Wolfie2K3 I disagree with your statement that the iPad is a giant sized iPod Touch. It is, IMHO, something all by itself. Not a laptop, and more than a smart phone. As with all technology, if it works for the user it is good. If it doesn't...well you get the idea.

Er.. More than a smart phone..?

@golf25radioman

Really? Given the wi-fi model doesn't come with any sort of cellular at all and the 3G version is DATA ONLY - that statement is kinda silly, don't ya think? Especially given that you'd look rather funny holding one of them up to your ear...

I'm not disagreeing. Whatever floats your boat. I merely loathe the advertising spin Apple puts on their stuff.

To all you Haters....

It is quite comical to here the haters saying things like..."Sheesh... Magical? Seriously... It's a piece of TECHNOLOGY. Nothing more. It wasn't made by elves or pixies or leprechauns or any other sort of 'magic folk'". These people are obviously Choosing to hate the product just because it is Apple. Apple really does have a "game changer" on there hands and regardless of what peole describe it as, it truly is a revolutionary device. Mine has not left my side since I picked it up (16gb Wi-Fi) and I rarely us a typical "Computer" anymore. Hate on it if you want, but it is here to stay. So go hold onto your windows machine and stroke its head to comfort it because in a couple years it will be irrelevent in the commercial sector. Slates are the future so you might as well jump on board now before your ship goes under.
@heathmaxie

I say, "Sheesh...Magical?" too. That doesn't make me an Apple hater. Sheesh, I own an iPhone. I like that it fits in my pocket. I don't need a giant one...

Neat toy, yes. Magical, no.

Maybe when it gets some USB ports...

@OhKrud

But what if a user don't care about USB now and is just loving every bit of this device for what it is, now? Are they still not allowed to use the word magical? To express their own personal feelings on the device? happy
@OhKrud Possibly, since it has a dock, keyboard and digital camera connector a USB device/connector isn't that far away. Besides, with Wi-Fi & 3G, most file operations can be done via that on one's network.

It says so much about the device in just a few seconds.

Now i'm not sure if the ads reminds me of the Droid commercials or if the Droid commercials reminds me of the Apple ads. "What is Newton/iPad" - "What is Droid"

Reductio absurdum
DOSdays Updated - 13th May 2010
Yes, I agree the ipad is nothing more than a huge ipod Touch. Only an idiot would buy it.

It's like having a perfectly functional 14 inch LCD TV and wasting money buying a giant 42 inch LCD TV that does exactly the same thing. Who the heck would do that!!!! uhh oh.... Reductio absurdum

That looks so evolutionary. Apple ought to acknowledge the comparison by adding ALL the good features of Newton (i.e. handwriting) and say it was ahead of its time. The iPad is a next Gen. computer, plan and simple.

RE: New iPad commercial modeled after classic Newton commercial
jeff.fostermedia@... Updated - 13th May 2010
People, the iPad is not a phone. Its not intended to replace an iPhone! I have both and I traded my Macbook Pro for a desktop mac. When I'm done doing super serious work on my iMac, I pick up my iPad and read, draw, play, watch movies etc. When I have to run and just need my phone, I grab my iPhone. When I might have something to do important, I grab both. I iPad feels like a notebook or sketchbook, not a laptop. In a meeting or class, its far less intrusive than a laptop or goofy netbook. So to each its own. If Apple wanted to create an actual smaller laptop running Mac OS, they could do it. But they make great computers, this is not meant to do what a Macbook Pro does extremely well.

Its small, reliable and fun to use.
