Palm makes one of its smartest decisions and cancels the Foleo

Palm makes one of its smartest decisions and cancels the Foleo

Summary: I predicted that the Palm Foleo would be the beginning and end of the mobile companion category, but according to Mr. Ed Colligan it won't even make it to the beginning now. Palm has decided to pull the plug on the Foleo project and even though I am a mobile device nut I have to say I think this is one of the smartest moves Palm coud have made. Are any readers saddened by the news?

Palm has decided to pull the plug on the Foleo project and even though I am a mobile device nut I have to say I think this is one of the smartest moves Palm coud have made. I played with the Foleo a bit and wasn't sold on it so I could see how it would have been a tough sell. Palm will be focusing on its next generation software platform, which should be its Linux OS for Treos. Are any readers saddened by the news?

  • I'm crying here

People knocked it for being a laptop replacement when in reality it was trying to be so much more. I like he mentioned a Foleo II so it is nice to know it isn't dead. I am trying to see if I could get my hands on one of those final units that never saw life on a shelf. Do you have any contacts?

When I heard of the Folio device, I had in mind that they were putting together something that would improve on the basic Palm idea. An easy to use and operate "companion" product that would give a larger screen, long battery life, zero boot-time - in essence, an electronic replacement for the legal pad.

What they announced though was something that had all of the shortcomings- limited battery life, expensive, but none of the advantages, of a small notebook computer. I couldn't for the life of me figure out who would have purchased a Foleo.

Foleo was a solution in search of a problem; no great loss IMHO.

    • As was Lifedrive

I am the biggest Palm geek of all time--I bought a Lifedrive at release time when they were $500; but both Foleo and Lifedrive are solving problems that don't need solving...

I liked the idea of the Foleo, something light and easy to use when I am travelling on business but will not be doing any heavy work.

With luck, Palm's announcement might result in the shipping of their OS.

A smart decision being Palm is removing what could've proven to be another "buggy" Palm unit. I say this b/c of all the PDAs I have ever owned Palm has proven to be the most undependable!

    • Not buggy for me.

I have owned 7 different Palm devices in ten years and only my Lifedrive is "buggy." I recently bought my first Windows Mobile device, and while I am satisfied overall with it, I found the PalmOS more stable overall (the single exception being PalmOS5.4 Garnet on the aforementioned Lifedrive) than Windows Mobile and I am amazed at how little software choice there is for Windows Mobile! For every need I had hundreds of choices for PalmOS and 1 or 2 for Windows Mobile.

I agree that Foleo had too small a market to be a viable product and with the paucity of Treo's running PalmOS even Palm fans like me are switching to other hardware. The PalmOS made Treo attractive to me--running Windows Mobile it's a clunky dinosaur. I miss my Palms, but I don't regret my Blackjack.

But buggy? Not in my experience. I find Palms rock-solid stable.
