Turn your iPad into a laptop with the KeyCase iPad Folio Deluxe

Summary: I went on the road with just an iPad 2 and a bluetooth keyboard. The results are surprising.

Before my last vacation in April, I openly debated about which gadgets to take on vacation with me. In the end I settled on leaving the MacBook at home, and taking the iPad along for the ride.

In retrospect, I'm still happy with my decision, but if I had a KeyCase iPad Folio Deluxe at the time, there would not have been a decision to make.

If you're not familiar with the KeyCase iPad Folio Deluxe, it's basically a bluetooth keyboard, embedded in an iPad case. The end result is a slightly bulky case, but with tremendous functionality.

To be honest, when I first saw someone typing away with a keyboard attached to an iPad, I wondered whether or not it was really of any use. It wasn't until I took mine on the road, sans laptop, that I fully appreciated the power of it.

For my test I wanted to be forced to use the iPad for a day on the road. I made sure that both the bluetooth keyboard and my iPad were fully charged and then set out for a remote work day, with the laptop left behind. The end result was something I hadn't expected. For example, for about the first hour I was still typing away at the glass, and not even using the keyboard. However, once the work day really started, that's when people I was emailing with suddenly wanted me to hop on IM. In addition, other co-workers needed me to take a quick look at a Powerpoint or an Excel spreadsheet.

If you're wondering how I accomplished the above, it took a few different apps.

For Instant Messaging, there's a great free App called IM+. I downloaded it and then setup my Gmail and my Google Apps accounts, and in seconds was IM'ing while working on other projects on the iPad. Thanks to the iPad's ability to multi-task, you can work in one App, and get notified of a message coming in.

For viewing documents, GoodReader came to the rescue, yet again.

As for composing and editing documents, there are plenty of options out there, and recently Matt Miller did a great showdown, so make sure to take a look at that, since there are a number of options to choose from.

Of course, I had my trusty Safari web browser. It's amazing how much of my work day is spent in a browser nowadays.

As for the KeyCase, it stood up to the test. The keyboard was surprisingly responsive, the battery lasted the entire day (rated for 90 hours of uninterrupted work time), and for the most part, I didn't really miss my laptop.

If you're looking to get even more use out of your iPad, look no further than the KeyCase iPad Folio Deluxe with bluetooth keyboard. It's a small price to pay to get more functionality out of your iPad.

One more thing: Mobilefun also let me know that they're in the process of shipping me the new version of the kit, which includes hard keys instead of silicone, and velcro to help hold the iPad 2 into place.

Do you use your iPad as a laptop replacement? If so, share what apps and accessories you use.

      @tatiGmail
You simply have no idea what you are irreverently dismissing.

I use a similar keyboard case for my iPad 1 - the Padacs Rubata - and I concur with the author's assessment. My iPad travels everywhere with me and my laptop never leaves the house; in fact, it never gets used. Same for my wife. Same for the other half dozen people I know who also own an iPad and keyboard case.

The only issue with which I disagree is Safari, which I dislike but am "forced" to use; but then again, that has nothing to do with a keyboard case :-)

As for apps, I use DocstoGo, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iThoughts, Penultimate, iAnnotate, ShowMe, Zinio, Kindle, iBooks, various animation apps, Spanish language apps, camera apps, music apps and many, many more.

        thats quite a compelling argument. it is becoming evident that tablets are an obvious netbook replacement. although they cant yet compete with usability of laptops

        @ptorning

Here's a thought, instead of a keyboard, why not a second iPad!

        The second iPad could be linked to the the other and run a keyboard, that would free up the screen on the first. It would also allow you to slave of other tasks to the second tablet, passing its output to the first. To reduce the cost of the additional screen, a lot of the the iPads features could be removed, such as camera's, WiFi, 3/4G radios. Only have bluetooth. no external connectors, etc...

Just have a great processor, fast video and excellent bluetooth speeds, all these would allow the keyboard and other app's that would or could be run on the second screen to perform well.

        Yeah because Apple does not make laptops, and Apple is known for over-complicating things.

    Likely the thinnest SSD drive and more ports will appear on/in future iPADs or on mated-tethered keyboards. With improved battery technology, and CPU's, the iPad and the laptop will have merged. Good news. We're gonna need MS to improve the OS too, or Apple will own the market.

    and another great thing...I found my apple wireless keyboard not only works with my IPAD, but also with my IPhone! It is terrific for travel when you have long messages to type, etc. very lightweight and amazing!

    There seem to be a number of competing products. Have you tested any others?

      @jwwilkie I ran in to the same thing. I want to purchase one but so far haven't found a source in the U.S.

      @Joel Evans can you recommend a U.S. distributor?

      Thanks!

      hit a best buy that sells iPads. they carry the Zaggmate. it has "hard keys" -- it isn't a silicone keyboard. the shell that the keyboard sits in doubles as a screen protector AND you can set your iPad in the shell in landscape or portrait mode -- you choose vs. the one in the article which is landscape only.

      Looks like Thinkgeek has it http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/keyboards-mice/e65a/ for less than Brookstone.

    To those who wonder why I prefer my phones to have a physical keyboard - read this column. While I'm thinking about the Photon 4G I'm also thinking about what small keyboard would be worth pairing with it, along with the Graffiti app (don't laugh - I was pretty good with it on my long-ago Palms). Since I'm usually carrying my phone in a purse, except for short periods, the small keyboard wouldn't really be a weight/size issue. But why can't they just put one in the darn thing? That 8 megapixel camera might make it worthwhile to put up with the rest.
