Unboxing video and shots of the new Palm Treo Pro

Summary: The Palm Treo Pro was announced a couple of days ago and I received an evaluation unit yesterday. Unfortunately, I cannot post a review of the device until next week, but in the meantime I wanted to post my unboxing video below and a couple of out-of-the box photos for you to check out. I don't shoot videos of all of my unboxings, just the ones that are a bit unusual and as you can see in the video below Palm did a great job with the packaging on this device.

I am collecting questions from readers in my earlier post and will take a look here too if you post questions you want answered in my review. I will be in Singapore over the next couple of weeks, but should have full net access to post my review so stay tuned for that.

Unboxed and next to the Nokia E71

Unboxed and next to the BlackBerry Curve

Some of my first initial thoughts of the device are that it is much glossier than I anticipated, the width and thinness are just about right and feel good in your hand, I don't like that the Palm threaded SMS implementation was removed for the Windows Mobile 6.1 version (I find it less attractive with fewer features), the keys are very Centro-like with a bit more spacing, and the 3G reception is much better than what I saw on the iPhone 3G.

  • Screen resolution and crispness of fonts

With so many VGA devices coming to market, i am more interested to know the how crisp looking the fonts and the screen are. I would like to see some screenshots around this.

I have the design to be attractive and feature set is decent.

Also would like to know the navigation program that are compatible with the 320X320 resolution.

The ONLY advantage TREO PRO now has over Blackberry CURVE is the keys are easier to read. We switched from TREO680 to the Curve last year after 12 years with PALM and now our family has 5 BB Curves! PALM BLEW IT WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE PUT A PHONE IN THE T5 or T|X!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Need I say more?

It's nice to see an Palm device that actually looks a bit sexy. I'm sure this has a lot to do with HTC, but it's about time. http://htcsource.com

  • This is an HTC built device, here's what to look for:

    1. Is the display Transflective or Transmissive? If it's washed out under bright light (ie sunlight) then it's transmissive, a hallmark of HTC.

    2. Is it responsive or does it suffer the all too familiar HTC lag on just about everything.

    3. How does Pocket IE react when scrolling long pages, does it jitter or skip portions of the page?

    4. Do the alarms (time, calender appointements etc) work when the device is in suspend mode?
