Who do I think I am fooling? iWill be buying an iPad

Summary: I updated my post about the Apple iPad and nook replacement and stated that I would probably not be replacing my nook with the iPad for a couple of reasons. I then read Joel's post on why he can't justify it. We then spent all of MobileTechRoundup show #195 talking about the Apple iPad. I was a bit unfocused yesterday during the Apple announcement while caring for my wife in the hospital, but after focusing on the device and its features and specs I have to say I will definitely be buying an iPad as soon as I can. I am sure my Twitter followers and readers here already expected that I would anyways, right?

I then read Joel's post on why he can't justify it. We then spent all of MobileTechRoundup show #195 talking about the Apple iPad. I was a bit unfocused yesterday during the Apple announcement while caring for my wife in the hospital, but after focusing on the device and its features and specs I have to say I will definitely be buying an iPad as soon as I can. I am sure my Twitter followers and readers here already expected that I would anyways, right?

I was really expecting Apple to show off some cool new technology or functionality none of us were thinking about, but we did not really see any of that with the iPad announcement. I honestly think the two main compelling parts of the iPad at this time are the price and the 3rd party application support. If the iPad was running OS X then I would not be interested since I already have an excellent MacBook Pro. The low price, huge selection, and high quality of iPhone applications are much more useful for a device like the iPad where you are consuming media and data more than creating content. I can't wait to try out all of my Bible study applications, news and sports apps, games, and more.

I now need to figure out which model I will buy and have already eliminated the 3G models from consideration. I have a Verizon MiFi that lets me use multiple devices and will use this with the iPad as well. AT&T service has issues and I don't think adding more devices is going to help, but the fact they through in access to their WiFi network is helpful. I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS with some movies, apps, and music, but since I do not have a huge personal music collection it is only about half full. Thus I don't see a need for the 64GB model. The 16GB model seems a bit too limiting though since there may be some large sized games and apps optimized for the iPad and I don't want to have to manage the apps I use due to space constraints. Thus, the 32GB iPad is my most likely purchase at $599. This is actually about the same I have been paying for Nokia smartphones so is not unreasonable at all.

As Kevin mentioned on the podcast this morning, we may also see the iPad launch or be updated shortly after launch with the next version of the iPhone OS that supports some multi-tasking and other advanced functionality. I would love to stream Slacker Radio in the background while surfing and hope we do soon get some limited multi-tasking support for 3rd parties.

The iPad may not replace anything for me since you will still need some kind of mobile phone for out and about usage and it won't replace my MacBook Pro for writing extended writing and content creation. I commute on the train 45 minutes each way every day so the iPad may be a wonderful tool for checking websites, performing some communications tasks, and enjoying the ride. Honestly, the iPad may actually replace my nook too since it will let me read in bed and have access to even more ebook content than even my nook. The one unknown here is Apple. If they decide to shut down all the ebook stores but their own, then that will be a problem and I don't think Apple will want to initiate that fight.

    • iPad... Steve is kidding right...

This thing is not a 'pad'. One can't write on it... take notes on it.... convert handwriting to 'font text' can't even convert speech to text. Seems to me that Steve J has just introduced an oversized iPhone sans the phone.

I keep wondering what this thing does that I can't do with my iPhone (at least I can talk on that and take pictures/video). The iPhone is interactive this thing is.... I don't know what but it isn't as functional as the iPhone and my laptop. Especially since I can get iBooks on my other devices.

And i"pad" might not hvave been the most sensitive of names. I'm thinking that 'iPon' might be the next version. For those who swim and bicycle during those sensitive days of the month. Maybe the iPon will keep the other half of their audience from retaining water.

      • Actually "There's an app for that" ;)

Actually there is if it runs the same apps as the iPhone.

The notepad is built in. You can get a handfull of apps that let you manipulate office docs. You can convert handwriting to 'Font text' and it can not only convert speech to text but it can email you or whoever you address a copy of the speech to text with a link to a hosted copy of your original speech.

Yeah... It's that good and I was one of the louder critics of the iPhone favoring instead the neo1973

  • Disappointing device. I'll wait for version 2.

I was hoping to upgrade to this from my netbook. Unfortunately, this would be a downgrade. There is no camera for video chatting. While traveling I like to video chat with the family. I also wanted a real GPS in this device for travel. Apparently, this device is a repeat of the inaccurate cell-tower triangulation of the first iPhone. Yet, they improved the maps application... Why?

So basically, this device does LESS than my netbook and iPhone 3GS can do. So why would I buy it? Answer? I won't.

    • I Agree---Half a Loaf at Best

This would be a great product with the camera and a GPS you suggest and the ability to load topographic maps from My Topo (Formerly sold by Maptech). I'd love to have one to mount on a jeep dash to explore Utah's wilderness where sometimes we are more than 60 miles from a paved highway.

      • Technology is Great

I remember when we used paper maps and had to know where we were going....

    • It's still a couple of features away

From being a good "road warrior" tool for business travel. But when the next version comes out a year from now, I might be a customer. Getting tired of lugging "my whole life" around with me on my laptop, especially with the risks that entails lately.

    • It does have real GPS.

Assisted GPS is like GPS+. The point typically is to help acquire satellites
      faster.

  • How soon before those glass screens start cracking...

...after someone stuffs it into a briefcase...just like the Kindles?

And after spending quite a bit of time today reading, on multiple OTHER tech sites, about what the iPhlop DOESN'T come with, you're STILL going to buy one? Sure wish I had your money.

And then there's that name. iPad. Has anyone read opinions on that name from any FEMALE journalists yet? They're certainly NOT impressed.

    • Yep, I also base my purchasing decisions...

      on a product's name.

By the way, what do those girly football and hockey players wear for

        • The word PAD

Has more meanings then just a feminine hygene product, jeez peeps, grow up! ;-)~

While this product appears to be basically a larger iTouch, I am sure many buyers will help to PAD Apples profits by buying it. (btw the iTouch needs a Myself app!)

Get the WiFi version so you can enjoy it around your PAD.

But when the screen breaks, might as well toss it with the used pads!

Maybe there will be a PAD app that will let you doodle & scribble with your finger.

          • The only problem with "Pad"...

... is that it gets adolescent boys all worked up. Do any grown-ups in the audience have a problem?
            jpdemers@...
          • I refuse to think of myself as a grown-up...

but I am old enough that the concept of a tablet computer called a 'pad'
reminds me of a pad of paper.

      • That may be one of the reasons

that not a lot of women play those sports. Don't try to pull the macho man thing. Ask you girl friend or wife, if you have one. My wife was turned off because some of the manufacturers tried to market a laptop for women, in pink. She got a red one, but it felt like it was made more for a woman.

        • My wife had no problem...

with the name. Do the women you know have problems with ThinkPads,
          Brillo Pads, or launch pads?
