Will Apple rebirth Lala.com at the WWDC?

By | June 1, 2010, 7:45am PDT

Summary: Apple purchased and now shut down Lala.com, a music streaming service. Are we going to see new features added to iTunes next week?

Apple picked up streaming music site Lala media last year. At the time, the rumors were that Apple would release a cloud-based iTunes. While Apple has still not made any announcements around the future of Lala, yesterday saw the company discontinue the Lala service.

This is not a surprise since Apple previously made mention of its plan to shut down the service as of May 31st. However, with no replacement announced it does make the world wonder what Apple is up to.

At the time of the acquisition, it was reported that sources close to the deal claimed that the acquisition was made so that Apple could get Lala’s engineers. That may indeed be the case but my guess is that Apple is going to take bits and pieces of the software and roll it out in stages. Then again, it may just launch Lala as it once was, but now integrated with iTunes. After all, the company has a nice deal going with Pandora, which offers a similar service.

I’m definitely a fan of having my music available to me “in the cloud”. What I’d really like to see is iTunes sniffing my music collection and then making those same tunes available to me to listen to anywhere. It definitely sounds like a nice extension for both the MobileMe service, and a fantastic iPhone or iPad App. Perhaps we’ll see something at Apple’s WWDC next week?

Lala is toast. Apple bought Lala so Google could not get it solely to protect its Apple store. Lala was a far superior application to Itunes. Do you really think Apple will allow you to listen to any song in its inventory once for free, buy lifetime cloud access to a song for 10 cents, or download a song to your hard drive at a 10 percent discount to that offered by the Apple store. Does anyone really think Apple had a shortage of engineering talent to justify its acquisition? Patents maybe??? Apple dumped on Lala's customers big time.

This is all speculation that I can only hope is true. I already miss lala.com. I have one song that I paused and replayed on lala.com. I know after the song ends I'll see the disconnect notice. I have an iPad and always loved Apple until their antics this year. I would really have a negative view of Apple if there's is no real replacement for lala.com

I miss Lala too. I have considered more Apple products but it seems like lately they are just too anit-consumer for my tastes. Lala was a great site with the best prices around. Everyone else seemed like they were price fixing in comarison to Lala. Way to go Apple... You already sell the most expensive hardware now you are driving up the cost of music too!

turf war strait up. apple isn't into tech that cuts into it's slice of the pie and this acquisition was preservation of that turf. Too bad because Itunes service is not even close to what Lala was providing. I finally felt I had site where I could explore new music groups I may not have otherwise been exposed to. That in turn may lead to the purchase of some of their music or an entire album. But NOOOOOOO! Apple says, buy it and shut it down. That's why I stick with PC's and avoid Apple products.
