Will the QUE proReader ever ship?

By | June 25, 2010, 2:26pm PDT

Summary: Did the price drop of the Nook and Kindle influence the QUE proReader’s delay?

It may just be coincidence, but the same week that the Kindle and Nook both see price drops, Plastic Logic delays the shipping of its proReader. In addition, the company has canceled pre-orders.

Normally the delay wouldn’t be that big a deal but the fact that the QUE proReader is $799 and its competitors are selling for less than $200 now is a bit concerning. Also, the iPad continues to dominate with more than three million sold in 80 days. For less than you’d pay for the proReader, you can get an iPad which offers eReader functionality, and a whole lot more.

The most surprising thing to me is the cancelation of pre-orders. Does Plastic Logic really think that there will be a market for its device when it finally ships? At least with pre-orders locked in, they had something to count on.

I really have to wonder if there’s a need for the QUE proReader to ship. With an unknown ship date, cancelation of pre-orders, and plenty of competition, it might be time for Plastic Logic to pull the plug.

I have been waiting for almost three years now since its first announcements for the Que to be released. It was a very hot, innovative product when it was announced.
Now after all these years of torturous waiting, when the delay was announced - and worse - the site gives no delivery date estimate, I still wish I could be a faithful customer but I'm beginning to lose heart.
I think they would still have a market - though shrunken by now - if they at least gave us anything like an estimate date to hold on to. But they are now losing their edge by the day. It's a pity to see a company that did so much investment lose its position now.
And that makes us wonder further, if their predictability and market share will be like this, what is gonna happend to those who buy the product?
They may be good at the technical side but they are not doing skilfully at customer relations.

This is quite unfortunate news after a week of good news (for readers) from Amazon and BN. The QUE eReader was one of the few devices that many, including myself, were really looking forward to reviewing. It is aimed at a higher-end market and boasts features that reflect that: A very well designed interface, a highly responsive touchscreen keyboard, and a full sized e-ink screen...all ideal for business documents like excel spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations, word documents, magazines, and newspapers. Oddly enough, you can even process email through the QUE. And of course, books naturally become a joy to read on such a fully featured device.

I'm disappointed that it's been delayed yet again, but at least they will make sure it is an even better product when they do finally release it. Too much to say here, but I have continued my reaction with some more thoughts on my blog. Please check it out: http://ebookreader-ben.com/plastic-logic-que-proreader-delayed-second-time/

Just like PDAs, the market has come and gone for standalone e-readers. I bought a Sony last year because it offered more features (like audio player) than the Kindle, but it will go in the drawer soon. The next-generation follow-ons to the iPad are incredibly more versatile, and will come in a variety of sizes including one that mirrors the current ebook size.
