Windows Phone 7 stock already depleted?

By | November 10, 2010, 10:03pm PST

Summary: Fake shortage or true demand?

Mary Jo Foley is reporting that stores are either sold out or almost all sold out of Windows Phone 7 devices. She goes on to speculate about glitches in the software, problems in hardware, and more, but in the end gets Microsoft to admit that they are suffering from some shortages. The good news, though, is that Microsoft is also confirming that supply will be replenished in the coming weeks. I hope for the company’s sake that it can keep up with demand, especially with Black Friday coming up shortly.

I have to admit that I’m surprised that there are device shortages and I’m left wondering if it’s not part of Microsoft’s plan to drive up demand. After all, what better way to make someone want to buy a phone, then to create fake demand for said phone. Then again, perhaps the commercials are driving people to leave the iPhone behind and grab the unproven Windows Phone 7? (see commercial below)

In my circle of friends I have yet to have anyone ask me about Windows Phone 7, nor purchase a device. Believe it or not, my friends aren’t all techies either, so they definitely aren’t already iPhone or Droid owners.

Early reports are putting initial sales of the devices at 40k units. The number isn’t so terrible, especially when compared to the dismal sales of the KIN before it was pulled off the market.

Are you thinking of picking up a Windows Phone 7 device?

Dell Venue Pro, its awesome, the WIFI bug is true though I tested it out tonight, but no big deal for me Microsoft or Dell will fix that... The folks in the Microsoft store also said that there is going to be an update to the wp7 phones "THIS YEAR" and then another one early next year(probably first half, my guess is) He said the update this year will be copy and paste, and some bug fixes.

But really I wouldn't hold off on getting one of these devices because it seems Microsoft is ready to push updates directly to end users, and I think the core thing about this OS is the fact that wp7 is nicely designed, and very fast... sure we will see updates, bug fixes and new features come out... but whats there today is well worth it.

I'm very impressed. Oh and don't forget DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS... Lots and Lots of developers know .net, so I'm sure you will see ton's of useful apps. I even wrote one over the weekend... I'll polish it this weekend and hopefully release next week, not sure how long the approval process takes.

The wife got the HD7, I havn't been able to get it out of her hands to check it out yet, she loves it.

There's probably a shortage, but I doubt that Microsoft is doing this on purpose. It's probably some issues OEMs ran into or that OEMs did expect a big demand for Windows Phone 7. Microsoft would want as many WP7 devices out there as possible.

My local AT&T and T-Mobile store have all the WP7 handsets sold out.

I doubt the low stock is on purpose, here in Canada it's been difficult finding a store with units but more so, they don't even have working demo models on display yet. Probably also due to stock shortages.
million on day one. You do realize this shortage is a) global and b) a month old now right? and btw black friday is old news this year. the big sales start this weekend...

Zune HD a sold out success 2009

I think this sold-out trick is somewhat overdone. I bet the Nokia E7 won't sell out, and I bet it sells 10x the Windows phone.

Reading those latest Gartner/IDC handset figures was a real eye opener.

40k? That's depressing
itguy08 11th Nov 2010
Motorola sold more Droid X's than that on launch day.
HTC Sold more Incredibles than that on launch day.
The iPhone 3g, 3gs, and 4 sold that on what 2 hours?

Face it, WP7 is shaping up to be a fail.

I expected the stock to be depleted. This is not Microsoft driving up demand but rather the people wanting a WP7 phone.

I dropped by a local mall and hit one of the phone stores today since family member is looking to replace her old Blackberry 8703e. They has no problems with stock on WP7 phones, the HTC 7 Surround and the LG Optimus 7 are not flying off the shelf. Talking with the staff, the iPhone 4 is still the #1 smartphone that people want to look at followed by Blackberry and Android devices. Virtually no one is coming in and looking for a WP7 phones. At this time, they lack the appeal (real or hype driven) to make them desirable to the consumer.

Perhaps we should ask which WP7 phone you lined up to buy?
