Windows Phone 7 to ship with more than 20 games

Summary: Windows Phone 7 has an uphill battle. To help it gain market share Microsoft will ship it with more than 20 games.

SHARE:

When we first reported on Windows Phone 7, it was unknown what the gaming experience would be like. Since that time we've seen demos of some Windows Phone games in action. Now we're hearing that Microsoft has commissioned the development of more than twenty games for the platform.

InformationWeek is reporting that Microsoft has hired Touch Dimensions to build at least twenty casual entertainment games. According to the developers, the games will range form a Whack-a-Mole clone to a digital sketch pad, and will feature extensive use of the touch screen.

I think this is a great move by Microsoft, though I would have preferred the company selecting a bunch of independent developers and not just one studio. Regardless, to launch a platform with touch-friendly, cool and fun games is a great move. Will it be enough to make Windows Phone 7 a contender in the mobile gaming space? I'm still not sure on that one, especially since outside of the game the interface is like a Zune HD, which contrary to what Microsoft thinks, most people have never seen nor used.

The launch of Windows Phone 7 is still a ways off, and with Apple rumored to be announcing the new iPhone next week, and Google constantly pumping out more Android phones, who knows what the landscape will be like by then.

UPDATE: Saijo from 1800pocketpc is reporting that Touch Dimensions has actually been commissioned to create 20+ games for WM 6.x and not Windows Phone 7. I will investigate further since I really hope that isn't the case. After all, Microsoft is putting all of its efforts into Windows Phone 7 and not WM 6.x.

  • It's great just if

microsoft could make WP7 looks like the premium choice in contrast with iphone fart apps eco and android busy eco

    • Well, they could ship with 2,000 games, but, you can't make a silk purse

      out of a pigs ear.

@DonnieBoy ..Typical Microsoft hater...the wait and see attitude would be a smart choice...it works on everything.

      • Just telling it like it is. They are slapping a failed music player OS

        into a smart phone.

I repeat: You can not make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.

@arasheps Why is it that the Microsoft Shills bring up the fart apps for the iPhone? Honestly you shills act like there have never been any fart apps made for WM. But console yourself with this fact: When WP7 ships it will ship sans copy and paste... HOW does that make WP7 a "premium choice"? Dude, your post was a total fail.

    • Well where is it?

      @arasheps
Let's see the Win7 phone first. Then worry about the games.

Or do you always put the cart ahead of the horse...

  • windows 7 phone??? WOW

(insert laughter here), now if they can actually ship one and some carrier actually opts to carry it and take the heat of a crashing, virus ridden, malware carrying phone...we'll be surprised. additionally why would anyone want 20 games on their phone that they can't remove? YIKES. 6 billion in taxes paid by Gates does not show much sense in the design of a phone product.

Oh wait, they're just the OS. That's right! Microsoft doesn't make hardware except for XBOXES.

    • do you get paid for trolling here?

@docmurdock no i want really to know, it's 2 option:
1-you are crazy, since you hate microsoft that much and still you come to the microsoft related article
2-you get paid for bashing microsoft

i should note that i hope it to be the second option

@arasheps I've been in this business since 1975. Microsoft provides something that some people need. I'm not one of them. The windows phone has been delayed every time Apple makes a move with the iPhone. Well if you saw WWDC keynote this morning, Microsoft's phone was just pushed back to the stone age.

As far as being paid to bash Microsoft...Nope.

And as far as trolling goes...am a subscriber here as you are. Obviously you were injured in some way due to my commenting. Oh well.

        Have a nice day.

    • HAHAHAHA. Why dont you promise never to post here again if

MS gets carriers to carry them if you think it'd be so surprising? Where did you read that the games would be uninstallable? Do you have any supporting evidence that WP7 crashes more than iphone or android, both of which have pretty high crash rates fyi? Can you point to a single reference of a WP7 virus or WP7 malware? No? Didn't think so. You're FUD is seriously lame...

  • Who knows. But then again, many bloggers claimed

that nothing would overtake the iPhone, instead the rest of the industry woke up and have started to prove them wrong.

Windows Phone 7 will be platform number 3 to choose from, as tThere are a great many people out there that don't want either an Android or iPhone, but are stuck with what avaliable at this time.

    • Didn't Android or iPhone read the press release?

How will anyone compete with the commissioning of 20 games. This news is game changing;-)
      Richard Flude
      • Hey, you are missing the point, he was serious. With 20 games, they will

take the market by storm. This is BRILLIANT!! People will be tossing iPhones left and right for the chance to have 20 games.
        DonnieBoy
    • RE: Windows Phone 7 to ship with more than 20 games

      @John Zern

Wait, WP7 will have 20 games to choose from? Really? Like OMG I can totally ditch my iPhone - after all there are only 1000's of games available for that. WOW!

And if you are counting Google as "the rest of the industry" that overtook the iPhone then you may be right... after all Palm is now part of HP who has no plans to use WebOS in the smartphone industry so there goes 1 competitor, RIM made an excellent attempt with the Storm but that was a fail... several former Storm users went to a Bold or Curve 2 so there goes another competitor... Wait, isn't MS a competitor now with that oh so delightful and successful WM 6.5? How is THAT working out for them?

WP7 may wind up being a sweet OS but MS really shot themselves in the foot with their delay in recognizing the iPhone platform for the phenomenon it is - love it or hate it it did revitalize the smartphone market and opened it up to a lot more people.

  • Are you seriously suggesting that MS has ever claimed anywhere

that it thinks most people have seen or used a Zune HD?
Or was that just you spewing baseless anti MS blather?
    Johnny Vegas
  • RE: Windows Phone 7 to ship with more than 20 games

I don't really see the interest of these free games. There are thousands of free games on the iPhone for example.
    atari_z
    • It has to do with instilling confidence in the app ecosystem

@atari_z for consumers and developers alike.
Also, one thing Microsoft failed to do with the Zune was preload compelling content so that display models could really shine. If the games are a part of the OS package people can get a feel for the gaming experience before they buy the device. I think it's a smart move.

You don't have to plug your phone into a computer before using it, maybe?

You don't have to open an "Application" program and search for these games?

Just because you don't see how this is a good thing, doesn't mean it isn't a good thing.

        @Droid101

You don't have to plug your phone into a computer before using it, maybe?

IF this is an attack at the iPhone then NO one does not have to plug their device into a computer to downloads games, apps, music, or podcasts. Only for OS updates... even contacts can be wirelessly synced.

You don't have to open an "Application" program and search for these games?

Sure do... it's so easy even a caveman can do it. What's your point?

Just because you don't see how this is a good thing, doesn't mean it isn't a good thing.

Hmmmm, this might be the first thing you've written that I actually agree with... but in this case it seems to be too little to late for MS and WP...
        athynz
  • I agree

I agree that it's kinda lame that the supplied games will be only from one game studio, surely they have enough $$ to supply games from multiple developers.
