Amazon opens, then shutters, then reopens its app store

Amazon opens, then shutters, then reopens its app store

Summary: The news last night that the Amazon app store was open for business coincided with Apple's suing Amazon to stop use of the app store moniker. The store is finally open this morning so I guess Amazon won for the moment.

TOPICS: Amazon

Rumors have been circulating for a while that Amazon was getting its app store ready for launch, and last night the word went out that the store is open. This news roughly coincided with word that Apple had sued Amazon to block its use of the app store moniker for the new venture. The timing of the Apple move was probably not coincidental, and it seems to have worked as despite news to the contrary Amazon's app store is nowhere in sight. Scratch that, the Amazon store is now indeed open.

Amazon is operating the store at the link, so get over there and get your free copy of Angry Birds Rio that is available in the store for a limited time.

  • Very excited

I have submitted an App in Amazon App store and was eagerly waiting for this day! Looking forward to see more downloads of my app.

    • So how easy is it to submit an App

@rk2010 Is there much additional work to do to submit to both app stores? Is it a no-brainer for devs?

Wasn't Danger (the company behind the t-mobile sidekick) the one that pioneered the concept of an appstore? Yeah, it wasn't called that way, but it sound ludicrous to me that Jobs wants to appropriate that term.
  • Shot in the arm for Android

Or should that be "ARM". Anyway this makes the whole Android experience more attractive. Millions have an Amazon account and go on amazon every day to buy books and DVDs. Amazon has enough clout to persuage people to buy an Android phone rather than an iPhone on the strength of the Amazon store.

I'm not sure whether apps can be bought from itself though. I followed the "how buying works" link and it only talked about downloading the Amazon Appstore app.

      @The Star King,

The apps are bought through your Amazon account and linked payment details you have with Amazon. They are then downloaded through the "Amazon Appstore app" you have to pre-install.

I "bought" (for free) the copy of Angry Birds Rio, and got an Email from Amazon just like I do for any other Amazon purchase, and the app was available in the "Appstore app" for download, which it did, and installed.

This is awesome. Oh and Apple? Drop dead.
  • US only?

Disappointed that in this day and age they open an Appstore that is only available to users in the USA. Being in Canada, I guess my money isn't good enough for them.
    • RE: Amazon opens, then shutters, then reopens its app store

@johnd126 That's not it, John. There are other issues that come with software sales and distribution that change by country. they probably wanted to get the US version running while they tackled the other issues...
  • Trade (mark) Wars?

Apple is suing Amazon? Isn't that like Goliath fighting Goliath? Just let me add My Opinion(tm), that this whole concept of trying to protect individual words in the English Language(sm) has plain gotten out of hand. Pretty soon people will not be able to speak OutLoud(R) without some sorry ass trying to bill them for Infringement(Patent Pending).
