Take the Motorola Atrix 4G and its innovative laptop dock, and replace the laptop with a tablet and you get the rumored Asus Padfone. Asus is expected to unveil the Padfone at Computex this week, and it looks very interesting indeed. What the Padfone does is extend the smartphone's display when needed into what looks like a 7 or 10-inch touchscreen. The phone becomes the tablet's processor and storage, although almost certainly the tablet has its own battery to power that big screen.

We will keep our eyes on the news from Computex to find out what platform is powering the Asus Padfone. It's most likely to be running Android, but it can't run Honeycomb on the phone so perhaps it will have Gingerbread on board?

This and the Motorola Atrix are very innovative!

An issue to note is that Moto has made it clear that they will not guarantee that their current dock will support future version of their phones. I wonder what ASUS will have to say on that matter?

I am confused by this statement, "It?s most likely to be running Android, but it can?t run Honeycomb on the phone so perhaps it will have Gingerbread on board?" Why can't a phone run Honeycomb? No other versions of Android are optimised for tablet devices. Running an older, non-tablet of version of Android ought to be a real turn-off!

If the dock is like the one in the picture, then future phones will be very restricted on form factor

Also, it might run ice cream sandwich, as this is meant to be usable on both phones and tablets, guess we will have to wait and see.

Google needs to make Android contextual instead of having different versions for different form factors.

Just didn't expect it to look so crude. Wouldn't there be overheating issues? Why can't the phone just snap into an indentation in the back? That would look more pleasing.

Now all we need is for the "Pad Phone" to dock into a keyboard (with extra storage) and become the "Pad Book" netbook.

Sweet! Now if they could do that with their ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, that would be even better.

OK, sounds like the tech equivalent of a Turducken, but still...

Right now, if they offered me one for free, i so would die a happy man. As long as it runs for my cell company, but even if it doesn't, i still would love one. Too bad I am poor.

@jlmcorp1973 Try to figure out a way to offer more value to others and you may stop being poor.

This is *exactly* the type of device I've been waiting for, and I can't believe it has taken so long for a company to make one. I'm not at all shocked to see it was Asus that did it. Long were they my favorite motherboard maker, and they really lead in innovation today.

Right now the Droid Charge is my top "next phone" when I come up for an upgrade in August, but if Asus pulls this device off, consider me sold!
