How many smartphone processor cores are too many?

Summary: Smartphone hardware is getting really powerful, but do we really need so much performance?

First there were single core processors, then dual core, and now quad core processors are appearing in smartphones. They are little computers after all, so the more powerful they are the better for everyone, right? I'm not so sure about that, if it gives the platform developers license to keep adding bloat to the OSes that doesn't add much value. We've seen this happen before, as devices get more powerful the software running them gets bloated with stuff that doesn't matter. Are quad core processors really needed in smartphones?

CNET @ MWC: Huawei’s speedy Ascend D Quad phone debuts (photos)| LG in talks with Google for Nexus device | LG leans on high-end specs in smartphone push | Huawei: Our Ascend D Quad is world’s fastest smartphone | Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to come in 10-inch model, too

Don't get me wrong, I like my gadgets to be snappy as can be, running software without hesitation and bopping along nicely. Lags in performance are the bane of the power user, but throwing ever more powerful processors at the problem is not without cost. It's only common sense that smartphones with quad core processors are bound to cost more to build than those with single or dual core models. Then there is the real cost, that of battery life that can make an otherwise good device unacceptable for use.

Mobile platforms should be designed to take full advantage of lower performance hardware. If a mobile OS needs a quad core processor to get acceptable performance, something is wrong. Take a look at the outstanding performance of the Windows Phone platform. It doesn't run on anything but single core processors, but is optimized to handle the lower performance just fine. That's the way all mobile platforms should work.

I'd like to see the smartphone OS developers get back to streamlining the platforms for optimum performance on lesser hardware. Battery technology is not keeping up with smartphone processor hardware, and I see a point coming where phones will outpace the batteries beyond a practical level. The OS is the best way to combat that bloat, and I hope developers are looking at that closely.

  • Windows Phone flies with single core processors

Isn't this strange that Microsoft is the one company that is doing it right with mobile phones right now? Their desktop systems have been known to grind old hardware to a halt, but with their new Windows Phone platform original single core phones are just as fast and smooth as the new devices just now launching. I would like to see more credit go to Microsoft for making such an efficient OS that doesn't need a focus on high end hardware to excel.

    • I agree

While Vista was an OK OS it was a performance hog at least until SP1 and I think Microsoft learned a lesson there. I have to say their product offerings as of the last few years have really been good in terms of performance and usability. It is almost like they are listening to their customers and feedback.

    • Android and Apple need more cores

WP7 has already shown to be smoother and faster on single cores than Androids with multiple cores. So the more inefficient your ancient Linux or Unix OS is, the more cores you need.

    • Is this true if

Win7.5 had all the same functionality and abilities as Android?
Don't get me wrong, I think MS has done a great job it is just that their OS lacks functionality I want in a smartphone...

  • With the right os/cpu functionality its not an issue. Unfortunately only WP

seems to be using the cpu optimally. It outperforms on a single core android running on a quad core. As long as you have good power management and shut down cores when they're not needed it's not much of a concern. Android seems to use the additional cores just to speed the battery drain. The W8 blogs covered this with respect to W8 tablets. The same has to be done with multicore smartphones. However when your smartphone is essentially your computer, ie you sit down at a desk with a wireless mouse/keyboard/display and a charging pad and your smartphone pairs up and them and becomes your desktop, you will probably like the fact that you have 4/8/more cores inside it. So Im looking forward to intel based WP8 devices :-)

  • Lame

My HTC Desire might be my first and last Android device, for my usage, these 2 and 4 core processors are over kill. Plus WP is not for me...

  • It's not how many cores are too many...

it is how many cores are enough. As you mentioned, Windows Phone makes do with a single core. The current iOS works well on the current dual-core. My Android has a single core and is almost acceptable, but not smooth by any means. But you are correct that throwing another core (or 3) doesn't necessarily solve the problem. However, Android will not be able to solve this problem as long as they allow great variety in processors. Microsoft has a reference design from which manufacturers cannot stray significantly. Apple has their own chip design now. That is why these phones work better.

  • Just like how we're still using 640k memory, right?

I realize that Bill Gates never actually said that, but the point stands. Advocating for the stagnation of hardware is silly. Yes, smartphones need more and more specs. This is because eventually, Smartphones and PCs will become closer in utility until they're basically the same device, albeit with different form factors (until something like wireless USB really picks up so that you can dock your "computer" with any set of monitor/mouse/keyboard set just by having the phone close by).

    • RE: Yes, smartphones need more and more specs

That is very true but there has to be some middle ground. Smartphone makers are ramping up the hardware at the expense of battery life and heat. While no one should aim to stop progress there is such a thing as rushing something to market. I firmly believe this whole mobile core war is nothing than a sales gimmick for bragging rights aimed at those that feel the need to upgrade their phone as often as possible to show off to people. Let's find the happy ground in terms of performance, reliability, and battery life.

  • "Are quad core processors really needed in smartphones?"

YES, until the next faster ones. End of subject. Now go away.

  • More Cores is nice

But I think it is done mostly as a sales gimmick to entice the people that insist on upgrading their phone at every new model. I think WindowsPhone 7.x has shown a powerful Mobile OS can run really well on modest hardware. When it comes to the needs of most people I would have to say that most do not need a quad-core phone to do their tasks just like most do not need a 6 - 8 Core desktop/Laptop (and in some cases a quad-core) to do their tasks. Since the OS in a phone is more closed than a full OS on a computer it should be more streamlined just like that of gaming consoles.

  • More cores the better

Asking "How many smartphone processor cores are too many?" is like saying "I think there is a world market for about 5 computers"

  • Never too many

    Why impede technological improvements?
The more they can the better and further the technological know how is advanced.
Those who ask are stuck in "what is".
I am one of the many who ask instead "what can".

  • Bring Back the Turbo Button

Manufacturers should bring back the Turbo Button (or the software equivalent thereof). If I want increases battery life I can run along with one core, if I need more horsepower (and decreased battery life), I can activate it.
