HP DataPass brings prepaid 3G data to business laptop users

Summary: HP has removed the wireless carrier for users of its EliteBook business laptops with the launch May 9 of its DataPass service. Data can be bought in blocks on the fly with DataPass.

HP has removed the wireless carrier for users of its EliteBook business laptops with the launch May 9 of its DataPass service. DataPass works with HP notebooks using Gobi 3G integrated modems, and allows owners to buy data connectivity in blocks of data to fit the particular need.

Access to the DataPass is as simple as installing the software on a supported notebook and giving a credit card number to buy a block of data. HP is offering a range of data sizes and time windows (subject to change):

  • 75MB over 5 hours -- $5
  • 150MB over 3 days -- $10
  • 450MB over 14 days -- $20
  • 1GB over 30 days -- $30

The access software used with HP DataPass constantly monitors both data used and time remaining, and data can be recharged any time easily. HP doesn't intend to become a data provider, rather it wants to make it easy for customers to get online in a pinch while traveling.

It's worth mentioning that this runs on the Sprint network. That can make a big difference to users regarding the attractiveness. For example, while it would work great at my house (Houston, TX), the coverage is spotty at my parents' house (W. Columbia, SC) and worthless at my in-law's house (Georgetown, SC). Means that I wouldn't want to get the service in a laptop, since a large portion of my usage would be when traveling to visit family!

Ooohhh... and the fees aren't too bad - at least for business use when compared to other ad hoc solutions, though the 1GB is a bit thin. I bet the cellular carriers aren't going to like this.
