HP TouchPad: Hands-on impressions

By | July 1, 2011, 2:51pm PDT

The HP TouchPad is available today and this morning I headed to my local Best Buy and bought a 16GB model. The unit was $499, and the 32GB model would have set me back $599. I chose the cheaper model as I am not sure how well the TouchPad will fit into my mobile lifestyle, and I wanted to keep the cost down. I have been testing the TouchPad for a few hours, and offer these first impressions of what I like and what I don’t so far.

Image Gallery: 16GB HP TouchPad available today Image Gallery: Charge Image Gallery: Charge

Specs:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core, 1.2 GHz
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Display: 9.7-inch, 1024×768, IPS, multi-touch
  • Video formats supported: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264
  • Camera: 1.3MP front-facing
  • Battery: 6300 mAh lithium polymer
  • Speakers: stereo, with Beats Audio technology, 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Size: 9.45 x 7.48 x 0.54 in, 1.6 lbs.

The TouchPad has an attractive black design with rounded corners and solid build quality. The back is plastic, and those who prefer metal casings will likely find this to be too “plasticky” in feel. I like it fine, and prefer plastic for tablets for the lighter weight. The TouchPad feels heavy in the hand at 1.6 pounds, so it’s a good thing HP went with lighter plastic construction.

The webOS user interface is a joy to use, and is much more intuitive and consistent in operation than Honeycomb on Android tablets. The card metaphor for handling running apps is a great fit for the tablet screen, and adds utility as the cards are updated in real-time. It is possible to read new emails in the minimized card view without opening the email app.

The TouchPad software is not as smooth as it needs to be, with occasional lags affecting the otherwise fluid user experience. The system has spontaneously rebooted on me once, and once I had to manually reboot the tablet due to the Skype app getting out of control. I will spend more time detailing the user experience in future coverage, when I have more time on the TouchPad.

Pros

  • Attractive design with nice curved surfaces
  • User interface is well-suited for the tablet screen
  • Bundled apps are good and offer good utility out of the box
  • Outstanding web browser
  • The center button lights up gently when notifications arrive and the screen is off

Cons

  • Heavy in the hand
  • System has occasional lags that impact user experience
  • Have experienced two reboots in a few hours
  • Lack of apps in the app store. The apps that are available are quite good and help deal with the lack of apps.

The HP TouchPad is the first tablet running webOS, and this platform shows real promise in the short time I have been using it. I expect HP to deal quickly with issues affecting performance, and developers to crank out apps to augment the few available. I am looking forward to getting a Touchstone dock making wireless charging possible, a nice accessory that was not available in retail outlets today.

James, just out of curiosity, what were you doing prior to those reboots.

You mentioned Skype as a cause for one. Was the cause behind the other reboot a mystery?

Thanks.

Skype is causing me a lot of problems too.

Either way HP will lose because of the huge demand they artificially created by dropping the Touchpad price. Either they raise the price back to something sensible (which angers the huge amount of people who now want one) or they have to deal with continued scarcity as people stockpile them to sell on ebay. Ive got the new touchpad I bought the cheaper version as well, I think it works very well. I can hardly tell any difference to my brothers one which is the faster one.
Don't count on developers rushing to the appstore, there's zero demonstrated demand so far...

Don't worry, the Earth is a big place. There will still be people left who haven't yet bought a tablet when Windows 8 comes out. You don't need to badmouth everything else in the interim.

of just how many Linux-based device SKUs are now on the market.

Let's wait and see how Linux device sales do in the 4th quarter against non-Linux devices, shall we.

I think HP along with all the other vendors will make their tweaks, adjustments, refinements as time goes by like they always have.

This is a great time for consumers. Choice brought to you by: Linux.

Thank you Hewlett-Packard

James, how can you give the web browser an outstanding when it doesn't do form auto-fill or remember user accounts? I'm getting really tired of logging back into Google Music Beta! :-

Running the Google Music Beta player is also an excellent way to demonstrate the non-responsiveness issues. It stutters, it stammers, it sometimes won't automatically advance to the next song when in the background.

And these days doesn't an outstanding mobile browser need to support full screen mode? I definitely rate the Playbook's browser as better than the TouchPad's just on that single feature.

And where are the web short cuts? I can't find any way to setup my missing web apps such as Fandango as icons on my home screen. Even my much abused by many here iPad can do that at least (although it _has_ a Fandango app in it's market)

The browser also lacks necessary features such as being able to specify the character encoding. Not everyone in the USA wants EN_US HP!!!

Where is the Read Later?

Where are the search engines? It lets you pick Google, Wikipedia and Twitter (better work on your ability to alphebatize HP before you get in trouble for playing favorites)

Where are the controls for configuring/clearing HTML 5 Local Storage?

Where are the controls for setting the Flash Privacy settings?

Where is the private browsing support? Where is the anti-phishing support? Where are the developer tools? (even the iPad has fully developer tools built in on it's mobile browser)

The cold hard bottom line: this is not a modern main line mobile browser. Every other platform has a better browser by miles. This is a very incredibly weak and frankly dangerous browser. What enterprise would want to deploy a browser to use to click on links in emails today with no anti-phishing support? I mean seriously???

You can't even sell this thing as an enterprise oriented tool instead of a consumer media consuming tablet: Dead On Arrival.

@JamesKendrick Really? Cool, now if HP would give me a working link to a User Guide so I can figure out how to do it.... I'll be able to setup Fandango and use it as my Fandango pad. Maybe that same guide will teach me how to load and manage my certificates (especially self signature Root CA's) as well (another major enterprise class feature it doesn't seem to have in the browser or email client).

Got my TouchPad this afternoon and find your first impressions to be pretty accurate. Performance is definitely a bit below where it needs to be and I have had one spontaneous reboot. Hopefully they will get an update out quickly to address those things.

On the plus side, WebOS really does shine in this form factor. It is pretty much a joy to use. I actually found the app selection to be better than I expected too. The Wordpress app was a particularly pleasant surprise. The built-in apps are also quite good.

This is definitely a version 1 product and one needs to be prepared for the trials of an early adopter or wait for some more polish. I see great potential here, though, and look forward to watching this platform grow.

Touch Pad...no thanks!
samuels1980 2nd Jul
I really was looking forward to this pad. I like the look of the touchpad, and I appreciate that it's not a direct iPad clone like the others. But what I'm reading here and elsewhere, is inexcusable. Folks keep saying hp will fix these bugs quickly, but if hp could fix them, I doubt that they would have debuted the thing with them. They had these reboot problems and the lag problem when they began tentatively showing this product. It may simply be that hp lacks the expertise to engineer the tablet. Whether it's excelerometer issues or weight issues, it seems poor engineering is the culprit and the only thing good here is the webos which hp didn't build!

If they don't fix some of this non-sense, and I do mean *quickly*, this thing will be nothing more than an unfortunate also-ran. This coming from someone who carried his Palm Pre *1* all the way through October of 2010 (iPhone 4).

Since HP ir re-badging this as a enterprise tool... Where are the tools for S/MIME email? Remote wipe/kill?

This morning as I was non-intuitively four finger swiping between apps on my iPad 2 to answer an email question I swiped to my HP12C from HP. In that moment it came to me: where is the calculator?!!?

I went back to the TouchPad and sure enough: no calculator.

I went to the market and sure enough, despite their desperate need for quality applications on launch day: no HP calculators in the market. HP makes several very nice HP calculators for the iPad 2 but alas no such love for their own OS and tablet. sad

I did get the announcement this morning that they've found Pivot somewhere and it's being uploaded to my TouchPad as I type this. A promised restart of the market card and the claim is Pivot will be available to the five of us that bought an HP TouchPad yesterday.

As with any first generation model, there are going to be some rough edges. Some of the applications that were slated to be release were held back due to more important features that absolutely needed to ship with the product. You also have to remember that this division of HP was owned by Palm not too long ago and anytime one company takes over another, you will have challenges in staffing.

Wait until you see TP 2. It will surly blow away an iPad 2 hands down. That device is surly like nothing else~!

@johnson bar If we have to expect "rough edges" why release the Pivot feature with a prominent placement for the HP Movie Store when all they have is an IOU application? I mean come on! They're currently pumping people to see the Pivot feature as a trustable source of recommendations on what to download from the HP Market and it tells you to go get the HP Movie Store to watch The King's Speech and all you get is an app that pops up an IOU???

Have you ever bought an HP printer and printed something out on it only to have it print "Sorry, we are working hard to support printing graphics, please try back in a future update to see if we have them printing then."?

Seriously, this isn't how a Fortune 100 company treats it's customers. It's unacceptable and someone in upper management needs to go call some managers to account for treating customers like me in this fashion.

HP....Remember the DV Series Laptops?
orandy Updated - 2nd Jul
Let me remind you, DV9000 (17") and DV6000 (15"), nice looking, web cams, etc. Weeks later, faulty WIFI chips, motherboards, etc.

HP makes good printers and that's about it. WebOS is not ready for primetime on tablets. Neither is Android. HP and Motorola are two of the worst CE manufacturers out there right now. ASUS is probably the best (even more so than Acer).

The real problem is that there is "ONLY" an iPad market, not a tablet market. However, there is a "me too" paperweight market though. It mostly consists of Android paperweights, but recently they've added a couple from RIM and HP : )

@orandy LOL! I love it. If you don't have an iPad, well, you have a paperweight.

So I finally get Pivot and it up-sells the Hp Movie Store pretty heavily. You go get the HP Movie Store and what do you get? Do you get Harry Potter or the Kings Speech? Heck no buddy, this is the HP TouchPad where nothing at all gets done on time: you get another IOU app instead of The King's Speech as promised by Pivot.

I'm now afraid that when the TouchStone charging station gets here I'll place the TouchPad on it and a little panel will pop up saying HP is working hard to get the wireless charging function to work and to try again after a future update. I mean what's next HP?

RE: HP TouchPad: Hands-on impressions
johnson bar Updated - 2nd Jul
Just remember if you place the TouchPad on the charging dock in landscape mode, you have to have the home button on the right side of the unit. ie. speakers facing down.

It's a massive undertaking to get a product of this level to market. There will be over the air automatic updates that will be free as things progress. Rome was not built in a day so don't expect the rest of the world to be any different.

The average person only has so much patience for glitchy, buggy, and incomplete products. Until the likes of RIM, HP, Motorola, et all realize this, I believe that they will be forever in Apple's shadow.

Also, with the Touchpad, where's the ecosystem? Music, movies, audio books, etc.? Again, until the others realize the importance of the ecosystem, they will be in Apple's shadow.
Especially when you're trying to play catch up. Apple was working on the iPad/iPhone for years, so once their product was announced to the world, they had already gone through the teething pains of building the ecosystem, getting fluid gui response, etc.

And while HP and all the Android table manufacturers where scrambling to bring something to market, Apple just kept on rolling and researching, and staying years ahead.

Only time will prove this right, but when the iPod came out, and people laughed, I bought one and knew it would be the market leader. When iPhone came out, maybe people, except Steve Balmer is seems, knew Apple hit it out of the park and its the biggest selling phone, with China and most of the world still desperately waiting to buy up everyone manufactured.

iPad will be the same thing. The iPod of tablets. It will own about 70% of the market and the other manufacturers will fight over the rest. Meanwhile, since Apple cornered the market on parts, these guys will fighting again towards the bottom on price, just like they do with PC's, and Apple will once again have the lions share of profit.

I purchased the TP Friday and returned it today. All in all there certainly is potential but not worth the investment in the current form. Maybe HP will license WebOS to Samsung. WebOS on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 hardware with a less buggy iteration of the OS would be killer. HP you're on the right track.
