Jailbroken iOS 5 devices: No OTA updates for you

Jailbroken iOS 5 devices: No OTA updates for you

Summary: Folks using beta versions of iOS 5 have discovered that the first iOS 5 beta update just released OTA will not work on jailbroken devices.

SHARE:

The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad crowd got understandably excited with the word that the next version of iOS, iOS 5, will finally usher in over-the-air (OTA) updates for the platform. Android device owners have been enjoying OTA updates from the beginning, and finally Apple is cutting the cord for device updates. Folks are already using beta versions of iOS 5 even though it won't officially appear until later this year, and the early adopters discovered that the first iOS 5 beta update just released OTA will not work on jailbroken devices.

Android device owners are already familiar with the lack of OTA updates on rooted devices, the equivalent to the jailbroken iOS device. Rooting or jailbreaking is the process owners go through to allow unofficial software to be installed to serve functions the official OS doesn't support. It has long been understood that rooting an Android device ends OTA updating, and it is now clear the same will apply on the iOS front for jailbroken devices.

Those using beta iOS 5 report you can still apply Apple updates by connecting to a computer via USB cable, so all is not lost. Getting OS updates OTA is a much better alternative to cabling up a device, so those with jailbroken iPhones may need to rethink that once iOS 5 is officially released.

    Android device owners have been enjoying OTA updates from the beginning

    Except that my Acer A500 still hasn't gotten the Android 3.1 update, so I'm not really enjoying that so much. I've had to resort to using 3rd party rom's over Acer's official ones (though from what I see the 3rd party ones are better).

    However, my iPhone, iPad and iPad 2 all got the iOS Beta 4 OTA update at the same time. I guess you can call that more enjoyable then the Android OTA.

    • Android DIDN'T hava OTA updates from the begining

      @tk_77 Android got OTA updates 3 or 4 updates after released the 1st GOOGLE brand version and became an iPhone clone. Before that, it was just a poor clone of the Blackberry OS.

    Why?
    I see nothing that says by thebtime 5 roles out the JB community won't have a OTA that works for them. The JB community for iOS have shown they are very adaptive.

      @rhonin Wait, what? How would the JB community get the infrastructure to push this update?

        @Peter Perry
When will it end?!? There is no need for JBers to set up ANY infrastructure, they merely need to create a JB that survives the OTA update, i.e. one that Apple does not check for in the update, and thus break.

Seriously, do you even understand how the jailbreak process or OTA updates work?!?

    • There is no need

      @rhonin there is no need to have an OTA for Jail Breakers. The main downfall of Jail Breaking is that you can not upgrade (in most cases) as soon as the new iOS is released unless you want to get rid of the Jail Break. There fore OTA updates of the iOS would be pointless since not all Jail Breaks run in Userland(Jailbreakme 3.0) and have to be performed on a PC or Mac, so you would have to plug it in anyways.

    "Android device owners have been enjoying OTA updates from the beginning"
    Lol, ha ha ha... Just because Andriod has the technology, it does not mean that Andriod devices receive the updates. My 2nd gen iPod touch receives updates even today... Android is stuck in bureaucracy and wireless carrier interest forever. I am a huge fan of Google, but I really hate what they did with Android. Apple wrestled the lock in away from the carrier only for Google to hand it back. If you complain that Apple is locking you in, then I am really enjoying this lock-in. You can cry with your Android stuck in wireless carrier lockin
    browser.
    • Wait a little and somebody will suggest ...

      @browser. ... that you should download some unapproved/unofficial rom whose link (to an IP address) was posted in a questionable forum by an "anonymous" and totally unknown "hacker" group.

    Lets give him the benefit of the doubt, his touch 2g is only supported up to ios 4.2.x. Officially, 4.3 dropped support for touch 2g's. I would think he is probably referring to his cydia updates... I wouldn't say they are unofficial just because they are from another site. I have to collect firmwares as well since I repair them. I have to do this with both android and iphones.

    @tk_77
    Depends on what version of android came factory shipped on your phone. Unless you use a custom rom, you will never be up to date with the rest of the community promptly after release day. Version updates are pushed from the carrier when the manufacturer releases them. Android OTA's are more for app updates and some core updates. I monitor this on my girlfriends phone quite often.

      @Nate_K

There continues to be security updates and bug fixes to pre-iOS 4.3 devices. It is NOT true that Apple no longer supports the device, just that they they do not support installation of iOS4.3 and higher.

    Says who? It hardly makes that much of a difference.

      @DeusXMachina Says the people that have it when they are trying to disparage the device the hate that doesn't have it. Apart from those time I don't see people really caring all that much about it. According to Nate_K's post above Android's OTAs are more for app updates and the iPhone has been doing this what since the App Store opened? Granted an app update over 25MB won't go OTA but I am perfectly good with that.
