LogMeIn: Now free on iOS

By | December 22, 2011, 7:00am PST

Summary: The best way to remotely control Macs and Windows systems from the iPad 2 just got better, and free.

I use the iPad 2 for a lot of “real” work, and a big part of that work involves LogMeIn Ignition on the iPad. I regularly use it to remote control either my Mac or a Windows system to work as if in front of that system in my office no matter where I am. Today a new app has been released, LogMeIn, that is free for iOS while providing all of the functionality of the old LogMeIn Ignition app.

The new LogMeIn app is the best way to remotely access systems using the iPad, based on my experience. The touch interface has been optimized to make remote sessions as good as they can be, and this experience is carried on in this new free LogMeIn app.

With this new free app, what about those of us who paid $30 for the older version? The LogMeIn folks are stepping up and doing what is right, as anyone who purchased the app in the past two years are now grandfathered in for free LogMeIn Pro service. While the free LogMeIn service can be used for full remote control and file transfer, the Pro service adds new high-definition audio and video streaming (Mac version in early 2012). Those grandfathered in will not have to pay for the Pro service to get the streaming service.

I have been using the new LogMeIn app and it is the smoothest, easiest way to control a remote system using the iPad 2. It turns any Mac or Windows system into a fully touch-optimized interface on the iPad 2. The new free LogMeIn app is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Good Guess. With all those iPads around the world, Apple's weight seems to be growing by the day.

More to the point, however, but developers know that iOS users, on average, spend about four times more per apps than do their Android counterparts. And knowing that basic economic fact, developers will spend more time on markets that will return a profit to them sooner. Economics 101.

It's a free app. Why don't you give it a try! IMO, there is no reason why it should not work.

I just downloaded it: It works just fine on my original iPad. I got to it via the link above.

Anyone got any tips on a good Android RDP client?

I'd kinda like to put one on my HTC Flyer in case a work emergency forces me to log in when I'm not near a terminal.

Please indicate iPad in the title when it's iPad only. "iOS" generally indicates all iOS devices.

Strangely, it shows up on my iPhone 4 in the App Store but not on my iPad (1)...

James, I too get a price of $99.99 which is far from free, you are referring to the LogMeIn Ingnition ap in your article and not some other ap? join.me appears to be free but appears to be collaboration. Clarification as to what ap you mean would be helpful.

I went to the LogMeIn site and you can get to the link from there, evidently it has not propagated through the Ap Store to be listed.

@geoff@...

The free app is called "LogMein" and the details in James' article are correct. This app was released on Dec 22, 2011.

Of course, I live in the United States and sometimes, in other parts of the world, a particular iTunes Store will not carry a particular app (for whatever reason.) For example, I can not download the BBC Streaming App in the US. That app is only available in the UK for now.

I know I paid for the app on the ipad(at least a year ago)however there is no mention of the free Pro services noted on my account.....and Logmein has not contacted me in any way to say that now its free? What's the deal?

Yoo-hoo! Android user here!

Uuuhhhh.... Hello Logmein? Any news for Android?
I've been using ignition for quite a spell and it works great on my EVO. I wouldn't mind an upgrade to pro too.

@sparky@... Yeah, count me in as another Android user who'd like fair parity with the iOS version. Or did Apple have to throw their weight around to get this sweet deal?
